At my uni (Leicester) we have 30 credit modules and we were told that meant we had to do 300 hours of studying for that module (150 hours for 15 credit modules) not including lectures, seminars etc. I won’t lie, there’s no way I did that much and I still got 2:1s, and I’m sure most people wouldn’t do that much either and still do well! Maybe Ruby’s taking similar advice a bit too literally?

That’s where I went! What course are you doing , just interesting how things are run differently

How much is the planner?

£16 + £3 postage, so £19 all told.

I think she gets really into what she’s studying and forgets everything else I’ve said this before but I’m part of her book club on Facebook and she’s just kind of abandoned the group. Like she said we’d all do a zoom call to discuss the books but nothing happened. She hasn’t been on there for months and the moderators run it now cos they can’t get in touch with her.

I think when she brought it up a while back, she avoided the question a bit by saying she doesn't actually use Facebook much anyway, so that's why she forgets about it. I wonder whether she would answer the same way now if people asked her. Maybe she hopes that everyone else has forgotten it too?

Edit: When I clicked on the link to her book club, it brings up a message that says "This content isn't available at the moment. When this happens, it's usually because the owner only shared it with a small group of people or changed who can see it, or it's been deleted." So no new members can join, or has it been deleted?

Ok, I get it that she drinks a lot of tea. But using the same, already used tea bag to make another tea?? What??

In fairness I do this, but I like pretty weak tea so don't actually leave the teabag in. I can imagine it takes a bit strange after a while as it won't brew to the same strength as before.

In the one about being productive and getting essay marks she literally went outside like 6 times during the day. I get we are in lockdown but she's been focussing a little too much on exercise

I have sympathy with her as others have said, she’s young and clearly had major anxiety about hygiene and being alone in the house.

It’s unfortunate because she only lasted what, 4 weeks? Coronavirus isn’t going away anytime soon and it’s for all of us to manage it our anxiety about it. Hopefully she’s still getting therapy. Also hope she feels able to elaborate about why too. Would be good for others in higher tier situations (Manchester etc). Although she is 1000% in a privileged place as she’ll likely have to be paying rent still.

I think my problem is the amount of time she’s given to people to order them, really only about 3 days - that’s not enough notice for all of her fans to see her video in time to order them. So yes it’s a business but, it’s not the best service if there’s a narrow opportunity to order. That said, she probably makes enough from them so fair play to her i guess.

The only reason I can think of for the tiny pre-order window is that the manufacturer doesn't plan to make that many.

I can only speak from my experience but I went to private school and my year was pretty much full of liberals, but a lot of people's parents voted Tory. I always just assumed it was the same for Ruby but I still can't believe how insensitive to issues she can be (with regards to taking the ad from the gov. and complaining about her A on results day)

Since people couldn't sit them, teachers were asked to submit predicted grades for students and rank them based on their mock exams, any in class tests, things like that. This was all submitted to the government who then moderated the results. Of course, the government decided it knew all these students better than the teachers that have taught them for two years and moderated the results based on previous averages for the school and on averages for all subject areas. So basically, if a school year was particularly high achieving compared to previous years and students were set to achieve results like AAA, they were moderated down to something like BCC because the school had never got good results like this before. Similarly, if a school had an amazing maths department but a terrible chemistry department, students who might have got an A* in maths would receive a C because the school's bad chemistry department brought down the average. Unsurprisingly, schools in poorer and more deprived areas have worse grades and as such those students were affected the most, meaning that many students who are from heavily deprived areas who had high predicted grades were moderated down, and many have lost the opportunity to go to the universities they applied to because of the government's algorithm moderating their grades down. I hope that makes sense but it's a bit complicated!

I'll also add that the government's rhetoric was that this was all about providing students opportunities to 'level up', but their algorithm basically meant those who went to private school didn't have their results moderated down so they're allowed places in the top universities whereas students from deprived areas who had the opportunity to be the first in their families to go to university lost out because of the moderation. It's basically a huge mess and, in a country like the UK that already has many class problems, has just exacerbated the gap between the working class and everyone else.

wow, that seems really unfair to judge individual students based on whole school average grades. i’d be devastated if i knew i should have gotten A or A* but was significantly leveled down.

Did she say she was moving home for the year or just for the rest of the term? I would assume either her flatmate made the same decision or maybe Ruby had to find someone else to take her place

I had completely forgotten about this cottage she bought! Has she mentioned it again? I wonder if she's renting it? Do we know how much it cost her?

I'm actually quite curious to know how well she's doing with money. She's been making videos for a long time and she gets pretty constant views + sponsors here and there. I wonder if her sister gets a bit jealous of that... I always wonder how the relationship is between them, they are polar opposites.

As far as I remember the cottage hasn’t been mentioned again. I would expect it is probably being rented as she always films from her parents’ home and seems to live there full time at the moment.

Haha oh man, it’s not like “academia” has vowels that tend to differ in dialect (like the a in bath, glass, past etc. or the dreaded scone/scone debate). She probably says acaDAYmia to sound fancier but just looks silly.

I say aca-day-mia. The Latin root of the word is with that pronunciation, and whilst traditional British pronunciation would be aca-dee-mia, both are correct.

Yes but covid is picked up on surfaces which are on your hands that can infect someone if they touch their mouth or eyes or whatever. It’s not about behaviour of the masses but covid is transmitted through surfaces which can include books, it’s not just an air borne virus

Wow, that's really lowered my opinion of her. I thought she had more integrity than the rest of them but this is one of the worst examples of tag hiding I've seen.

elena handtrack posted last night a couple of stories explaining the differences between #gifted, #ad and #unpaidad, and as far as i know, (maybe i understood it wrong) there's nothing bad about a #gifted product, right? it's just that one shop decides to send a product to an influencer for free and they decide (or not) to share it...
maybe i'm missing something? why are all of you concerned about it? (please understand that i'm not an expert on this matter, i'm truly curious to know why ruby's post might be a problem!! thank you)

It's nice knowing I'm not alone in my thoughts!

I know you shouldn't compare but Astrid (on YouTube) was an English Literature student at Cambridge and she seems a lot more intelligent, in a sense of naturally clever.

You'll see what I mean if you watch one of her videos.

I like ruby, I do, but I feel like a lot of her intelligence is not independent thought, like you say. It's mainly stuff she's read or picked up on. The fact she memorises texts and poems, and spends so much of her time studying. Also, seemingly making more work for herself and spending 11 hours on work which seems excessive for any student.

I don't know, she just seems overly studious and even with the way she comes across, not that clever, not really.

I really think that Harry Potter, or Hermione specifically, really shaped her personality and identity. I went through a similar phase, but grew out of it around 13/14. I don’t think that she’d be successful at Oxford until she learns to have some form of a life outside of academia.

But that's the point, she's never developed past the mid teens phase. She's even obsessed with still wearing age 13 clothing.
