I think in fairness she has definitely grown a lot as a person since starting uni, but she still have a bit of a way to go in finding who she is, but then I guess most people her age are similar in that sense.
As you say, those around her are infinitely better influences on her than Holly has, I feel like Ruby’s perfectionism stems from herself rather than her family which is a good thing as it means she can work on it rather than having others encourage it

She makes extra work for herself. I admittedly didn't go to Exeter, but I've just graduated from my undergraduate degree at another Russell Group uni and whilst it is a lot of work, it's quite easily managed and I had tonnes of time to do extracurriculars and have a social life. I think she's just determined to keep up this facade that she studies all day every day so she makes it sound like she's sooooo busy studying all the time.

I think Lydia Violetta gives a much more realistic picture of student life.

Yeah definitely, she needs to get some hobbies to do instead. What will her life look like when she works a 9-5 and can't take work home with her?

I remember in an earlier uni video (I don't remember which one because I only just discovered her and binged all her videos) she said she was struggling to fill up the day with work. Probably because you're not supposed to work for 11 hours a day! I mean that's more than full time jobs! The nature of degrees is you have extra time to do uni work/socialise/have a part time job. I guess since she said that she has discovered the wonders of taking notes on Kindle and then Notion and discussing uni with her flatmate.

I don't think her skin is thick enough to handle being a teacher. I could see her maybe dealing with being a lecturer, but idk, I just don't get that vibe from her. Maybe it's just me but I never got the vibe she was at all cutting edge with her work or anything, a lot of what she said is just parroting others.

You need really thick skin to be a lecturer, student evaluations are used to assess performance and there are even reviews on public forums like ratemyprofessor.

20 year old studytuber, studying English lit at Exeter. Her brand is based on being “wholesome” and “productive.” She began her channel making Hermione-Granger themed videos, hence the pseudonym for her last name.

Her thread has been quite active on GG, so I felt it would be good to start one here (I’ve seen similar dine for Jade and Holly Gabrielle).

I used to really enjoy her content and was especially excited when she went to exeter. I studied English there! However, the more I watch the more I have found it really quite unsettling.

1. the fixation on “productivity”, when she has herself acknowledged struggles with OCD and perfectionism in the past. It feels very toxic - not jusf for her audience - but her own well-being. Aspects of it also seem quite performative. She writes endless to-do lists - schedules the tiniest things like brushing teeth and doesn’t seem able to deviate from it at all.

2. more recently, people have picked up on troubling signs with her eating. Explaining away small portions, increased exercise etc... she has also spoken about being inspired by Holly, who now has a thread on here and I know it’s a key topic there.

in truth, I worry for both of them. The comorbidity of Perfectionism and disordered eating are sadly all too common and wish their families world intervene, not to mention being signposted by their audience.

While I wasn’t jumping around I was certainly relieved when Biden was declared the winner and quickly went downstairs to share the good news. And many, many people behaved similar!

Lots of people have been heavily involved in the election these last few days and the signal this result is sending to everyone is huge! Trump has caused many rightwing parties to gain momentum (not just in the US but also the UK, Germany, France etc.) so I think it’s alright that Ruby was happy. We don’t have to go into more detail whether Biden is all that great or whether all those people who became political advisors during this time will continue to keep up to date with politics, but the important thing is: people cared and people showed an interest.
And that is the first step towards change imo.

Again, literally repeating my original point which was that its great news Trump is out, but thats all it is. Yes its a time to celebrate the end of his presidency, but you’ve essentially gone from being extremely right wing to being moderately right wing and there is also space for frustration, try looking at it from a non european / US centered perspective.
Hence why I think her reaction was OTT

I’m quite like ruby in the sense that I like my own company, don’t go out much and spend a lot of time studying. But I don’t make work for myself like copying out notes in different formats!! There comes a point where you need to have some downtime. It doesn’t even have to be a hobby of involve socialising but just having a few hours watching tv or something. I’ve always got top grades and I’ve never worked more then 6 hours in a day. With ruby everything has to be scheduled and strictly timetabled, in one of her latest videos one of her tasks overran for 20 minutes and you could tell it stressed her out like crazy. You never see her just watching tv or doing something passive, uni work is supposed to be fun because you enjoy the subject but it becomes a chore when you make it all encompassing in every aspect of your day

If you’ve ever read The Secret History by Donna Tartt then that’s a good example of what dark academia is.

I can see how dark academia is exclusive of PoC as a concept in real life as it’s based on old universities like Oxbridge. However, as an aesthetic, I don’t see how it’s excluding PoC. There’s nothing stopping people from dressing or decorating their room in that particular aesthetic. Feel free to correct me, though. It’s an interesting topic.

Yeah I find this interesting too, feel free to shoot me down but does everything have to be super inclusive? Like obviously not actively rejecting certain people and there may be an unethical backstory to dark academia but not everything does appeal to everyone and/or is inclusive.

I’m guessing it’s a European historical academic thing so as a white British student surely its therefore acceptable for her to “engage” in this?

Sorry - late to the party! But just wanted to vent about dark academia. I absolutely love the aesthetic and I kind of buy into it anyway (I did before it was "cool", I'm that edgy ) but I feel like it's basically a rehash of the "hipster" trend of a few years ago with a couple of tweaks to the overall aesthetic? I'm not sure it quite suits Ruby, I feel like she should be more"tortured" to get the aesthetic right...

I thought this! They're definitely colour graded, and yes I think she must have an editor (it's just such a sharp improvement). I like the change too

Eh, her reaction really isn't that different to most other young people that I've seen on my instagram. A lot of people over here are celebrating because the US has beaten Trump and I think for a lot of young people (without getting too political) it signals a possibility that maybe we can also beat our own questionable government.

Yes, this! I didn't run around the house screaming, but I think a lot of us even in the UK are just pleased that Trump has been taken down! We do have our "special relationship" with the US to think about too, and absolutely it gives us hope that if people can be inspired to vote for the first time like so many did in the US, we might manage to do the same. I do think Ruby likes to be seen as being "in the loop" with current affairs though - so that hours scrolling through news on the internet can be dressed up as "productive"...

I’ve always wondered why she changed degrees from philosophy/theology to English. I know she loves reading but she doesn’t seem very passionate about the actual literature, more the idea of being someone who likes books. At alevel she always seemed more passionate about RS, doing more extra reading and essays. I think she’s gone entirely down the wrong path and will regret it later. You can just see how she talks about books shows her thoughts on English - like “the cover of this book is just beautiful” but not talking much about the actual literature and her critical thoughts on the books she’s reading.
