I agree that Ruby will struggle coming out of education, and think that either being a teacher, or eventually a lecturer, will really suit her.

I see a lot of similarities between Ruby and myself. I loved school and academia, and although I did have a slightly more balanced time at uni, studying was absolutely the priority. My mental health massively struggled when I graduated because a huge part of what had formed my ‘identity’ for so long was suddenly gone.

I don't think her skin is thick enough to handle being a teacher. I could see her maybe dealing with being a lecturer, but idk, I just don't get that vibe from her. Maybe it's just me but I never got the vibe she was at all cutting edge with her work or anything, a lot of what she said is just parroting others.

Still kind of petty to include that and also not explain in the video it wasn't her flatmates (until after everyone had assumed it was). It did sound like male voices, but it also sounded like they were indoors so potentially her flatmates friends? What does she expect living in a university city though?

Yeah thats the thing, it really does sound like its indoors coming from another room inside the house. She very much left it open to interpretation and had actually filmed her flatmates chatting together earlier in the video, which is why people assumed it was them

I think she gets really into what she’s studying and forgets everything else I’ve said this before but I’m part of her book club on Facebook and she’s just kind of abandoned the group. Like she said we’d all do a zoom call to discuss the books but nothing happened. She hasn’t been on there for months and the moderators run it now cos they can’t get in touch with her.

Ooh really? I feel like if she isn't able to keep on top of all the things she does, just, don't do them? I feel like her "being productive" only really extends to studying and reading, which is absolutely fine but maybe just focus on those things if you want to do those things, rather than having other things on the go and just, leaving them.

Talking about her other things, like the planners, I don't think £16 is tooooo overpriced for a nice planner, but I think it is another case of her not quite realising her privilege. £16 isn't a LOT of money, and for many people that would be fine, but not everyone is in a position to spend extra on things like this. To be fair, I'm waiting on some bank stuff to be sorted and even for me I wouldn't justify £16 on a planner right now. And that's coming from a full-time-working thirty-something (who doesn't earn badly, life just costs A LOT!). I do really like Ruby and I really don't think she means to cause offence or upset or anything like that; in fact I think she'd be mortified if she felt like she was upsetting, offending or alienating people. She's just in a very fortunate position and just hasn't really experienced life outside of her sheltered, privileged bubble. And I don't mean that badly, I think she just needs to be a bit less naive about the position she's in and the fact that she assumes everyone to be in the same position, that's all. I feel like she started to do this in her aca-day-mia video where she talked about it being very Eurocentric - and I hope she continues to do this.

I'm from a similar area to Ruby and grew up in a similar background (don't worry I got a huge reality check when I went from a strict boarding school to a far more liberal university and am far from the tory loving snob I used to be) and no one pronounces academia like that round here

I came running here after watching her cringe poetry recitation I couldn’t help myself I like ravens too but not this much. I didn’t know she was a theatre kid, but it’s nice to see her let loose a bit

I couldn't watch with the sound on because it felt cringe, but at the same time it was lovely to see her let loose a bit, she is always so structured and straight-laced usually, so it was a nice change. Talking of straight-laced, I cannot get over how completely different her sister is - do you think she just thought, I'll never live up to a sister like Ruby so I am just going to go completely crazy and off the rails so nobody can possibly compare us? It comes across that way, anyway - must be hard growing up with a sister like Ruby, however lovely she is surely there is competition? Unless that is just me, I am a very competitive person by nature and my brother and I are honestly totally different people, but I still used to compete and compare when we were younger! I wonder why she still hasn't created a video to address why she moved home and what Blakeney's situation is now. They seemed so suited to living together, it was lovely to see Ruby interacting on a social level in her videos, not just studying. I do honestly like Ruby, I think she's sweet, but I do worry for her because her obsessive "life control" just doesn't seem healthy?

If I were her I'd make a printable version available for a much more affordable price for students who cannot justify spending that much on a planner. Would be more encouraging and inclusive.

It's an aesthetic that came from the initial idea of romanticising learning and education and visually it heavily leans into the elements of old boarding schools, old established universities and stemmed from books and films like Dead Poets Society, The Secret History, Maurice etc. It tends to be Eurocentric and admire certain subjects (Classics, English Literature etc.)/school types (Etonesque boarding schools, Oxford, Cambridge etc.)/habits (being passionate about your subject, dressing in certain fashions) so people claim it can be exclusive of non-white non-middle class fans.

If people take the aesthetic as a list of rules on how to be academic the correct way, then yes, I guess it can be exclusive as the mainstream dark academica vibe still leans into the 'early 20th Century boarding school/Oxbridge visuals. I just like it as a collection of things/subjects I enjoy so don't care much for the "rules" of it (and not a part of its community online) but I guess young fans can be discouraged by it if they follow dark academia blogs and feel like they don't fit in.

I’ve just been prepping for a seminar this week in a humanities based subject and Ruby definitely makes more work for herself. All I’ve done is the set reading, quick look at some further reading, and brief answers to discussion questions (not even a full page of notes). It’s not always necessary to write everything from set reading, never mind write it out multiple times. If it works for her then I guess that’s okay but she’s putting out the wrong message that you have to make loads of notes/ read lots for a 1st at uni.

To be honest, sometimes I don’t even need to make notes on the reading if it’s short, I just make a quick summary so I know the main points for the seminar - definitely no need for 2 sets of notes

I do wonder if Ruby has sensitive hearing, because I do and that clip of them talking sounded very loud and would certainly disturb me getting to sleep. I wouldn't put it in a video but it would definitely bug me.

Because she still can't part with her inner Peter Pan. Personal style can be a rocky road and she's still very young but I believe she would look really great in Edwardian inspired blouses, vintage jumpers and 40s day dresses/slacks. Her current combo seems a bit confused rather than eclectic.

I totally agree.

Although it's not a style i'd wear, I love the aesthetic of Miss Patina's clothing and their vintage inspired items

I feel like Ruby wears too many clashing items purely so she can wear all vintage style pieces, rather than wearing a single 'out there' vintage piece and pairing it with more subtle items of clothing

I was quite surprised to see that she has moved back home as I thought she looked really happy with her flatmate!
Maybe there’s more to it? Although it would fit her previous behavior of needing to be home as much as possible but still ... I hoped she’d enjoy this time being “forced” to stay away.

I agree cause it her flatmate seemed like the perfect fit for her. They enjoyed going to Waterstones, drinking tea and making similar food and studying. Unless her flatmate has also went home? If she's signed a contract for a year then I'd be surprised if she was able to get out of it so quickly.

I‘m 22 and never went to uni, but from seeing people I went to school with posting about their uni experience on social media, I thought that was just typical British uni culture?

Yes a lot of it is... until her friend started sewing skin on her arm with a non sterile needle

I've really liked some of the things she's been wearing recently, but only individually because the way she pairs items together just looks...weird and frumpy I guess. She'll put a shapeless top with shapeless trousers or clash fabrics and patterns. I know exactly what style she's trying to achieve and it would really suit her buuutttt I think she puts too much emphasis on 'old fashioned'.

Pet peeve are her white tights she wears sometimes and those patterned shorts

Out of her outfit highlights on insta, these are probably the outfits I'm least mad at haha and I actually think they suit her really well

If its the poster I'm thinking about (username begins with W) they've been obsessed with her for YEARS, her essays on Ruby are tiring to read and just downright rude and uncalled for

I'm pretty sure in the first thread about Ruby, she was calling her chubby and getting really rude about her weight! Ruby has never ever been chubby, and I wouldn't be surprised if these hurtful comments about her weight has contributed to Ruby's weird eating habits today, as I'm certain she reads these sites.

Having a discussion about someone's style etc. is fine imo but dragging someone's weight or looks is unnecessary and hurtful. Ruby is slim, always has been? I don't know what the OP was about when they called her chubby. Goes to show that our perception is so distorted that we've started to see perfectly healthy people as overweight because they aren't model-thin. Beats me.

Also, some of my friends have been in seminars with her and apparently she's quite nice (if a little precocious) but mostly keeps to herself and seems more keen to chat with the professor than socialise with her peers. People who lived in her first year halls have also said that she constantly made noise complaints, which honestly doesn't surprise me! I think she's a nice person but she's VERY sheltered, and her videos are absolutely not an accurate depiction of what uni life is like. It's kind of become a meme among Exeter students that the uni sponsors her

This supports my thoughts about her trying to cosy up to her lecturers and be their 'friend'. I also feel that she probably doesn't expect her peers to be as insightful as she is, so doesn't necessarily value their contributions.

I can absolutely picture her making noise complaints all the time - let's face it, Ruby isn't the most flexible of people, nor someone who would hesitate to remind people of the rules (at least indirectly!). Other people are outside of her control (whether they are annoying her by simply being young/a typical student, or getting better marks than her), and I think that will always bother her.
