I think if she just said that she was tired from moving and unpacking and then left it at that instead of rambling on about how its okay to be an 'introvert,' and not socialise to justify her behaviour it would be genuine especially as it came off as rather scripted as it was something from an Instagram post she read or from her therapist.

She is really clinging on to the introvert identity these days. I don't know if she does this to justify isolating herself at home and at university, and basically this whole gap year she has had and all of her behavior. I'm expecting a lot more 'introvert ' Oxford videos.

And I know people on here disagree, but I'm gonna say it again -- I don't think she has an ED, I think she just doesn't like the taste of the Aseethicc healthy vegan shite that she plates up for the camera, which is why she only ever nibbles at it.

I knew she’d been caught eating non-vegan food regularly but, as you said, she was shit at covering her tracks and would still claim to be vegan.

It’s definitely a good thing she’s no longer even pretending as it’s a common way for people with ED tendencies to cut out food groups and restrict their food intake so I’m happy she’s dropped it.

It’s absolutely impossible for anyone to live completely vegan anyway so the sooner the label is dropped, the better.

It seems like another example of a time she's chosen something for the perceived prestige rather than what would fit her best. Idk if this has changed now but when my sister applied for English at uni a few years ago she also wanted Oxford, didn't get in, and she said the next best ones were Exeter and Durham. So then she was dead set on Exeter as it was 'third in the league table' at the time or something like that, went to actually visit it and didn't like the vibe, and ended up going to a different uni altogether because at the open day she heard about some random module that really grabbed her that the other unis didn't do. She now works in the field of that module. But if you're someone like Ruby, Ruby would probably think my sister is moronic for going to a 'less prestigious' uni than Exeter (it's still a good RG uni but not as 'prestigious' for sure) when actually she made IMO a smart career decision.

I wonder whether struggling to make friends at Exeter has resulted in her just giving up at Oxford and thinking she won't even bother this time round. That's genuinely really sad if so.

Making friends with postgrads isn’t so overwhelming and drink focused than undergrad though, people are more mature. It won’t be the same experience as feeling out of water at Exeter

I was wondering this. I think she knows she can't latch on to someone on her course like she did with Blakeney, hence on her over reliance on ChatGPT, I think she's just not that fussed, and uses introversion as a way of explaining it away.

I think this is also a factor, tbh. I found the people on my masters course more authentic as there isn't the pressure to make friends compared with an undergrad and you're a bit more relaxed through life experience and feel less inclined to have to prove yourself. Very little is genuine about Ruby, I think she'd stick out like a sore thumb (chasing childhood, aesthetic over experience). I think she realises she's a small fry and will shut herself away.

Nah I know that brand, the whipped cream is vegan. Also It’s a bit ridiculous to say no one can be completely vegan? I’ve been vegan for five years and it’s definitely not a restrictive eating thing, for me at least lol

Re; Ruby not going to the Pizza evening. Her excuse is rather transparently pathetic. Tired?? How exactly is she tired? She didn't come from a busy hectic job, she's not busy parenting or caring for someone, she didn't exactly travel from the outer Hebrides to get to Oxford, her mother drove her, both parents (presumably) helped her pack & unpack & she isn't ill or elderly so why exactly is she tired? Personally, I think she has marked social anxiety rather than introversion. I think there is a difference. She hasn't quite got it yet but there is so much more to University than studying and jumping on a trampoline. I think Ruby's year off (I'm using that term rather than gap year for obvious reasons) on top of covid has been damaging for her. I think she largely lives her life away from face to face interactions. Life isn't like that though. Even IF she becomes an author she will need to promote her book. This means mixing & interacting with people unknown to her. Writing it & even getting it published won't be enough. If she wants to work in academia she is going to have to interact with others. She's not going to be able to spend her life shut up in her parents house gathering cobwebs and cosplaying Miss Haversham. If I were her I would make it a goal to interact with others.

The reason why we think Ruby is restricting is because she dropped a lot of weight around the time she started at Exeter, grew out her bangs, and started trying to seem as small as possible. In the US, a lot of people gain weight their freshman year of university because they're stressed and there are limited eating options, so that made it stand out even more to me. Not every vegan has ED, but a large percentage of vegans have a history of disordered eating and Ruby clearly isn't vegan for ethical reasons as you've seen the amount of animal products she still wears.

Does anyone know of similar yet less problematic youtubers? I like the aesthetic but not the insincerity of it

It’s definitely not a restrictive eating thing for everyone but it is used by many to cover up worrying eating habits and restrict food.

I’ve never seen someone able to be completely vegan - ever! And I’m studying med atm with a special interest in nutrition so I’ve looked into this extensively. There’s always some fruit and veggies that’s pollinated by bees, fertilised using animal produce etc etc. All throughout my youth, I worked in restaurants and never once saw a vegan fryer - a veggie one, yes, but never a vegan one even in huge kitchen so the ‘vegan’ food is always being cooked with non-vegan foods. Kitchens are also required to have dairy free and vegetarian utensils, but vegan utensils are not a legal requirement so you could have something, for example, that is vegetarian and contains eggs being prepared on the dairy free chopping board which would also be used to prepare vegan options. There’s always going to be some form of input from animals and a degree of cross contamination. I think most of the vegan societies have now recognised this and promote cutting back on using animal products where you can but acknowledge it isn’t fully possible.

Edited to add - this is in the UK so laws regarding vegan utensils and other equipment might vary in different countries.

The other thing about socialising is I wonder if she's more high profile now than she was when she started Exeter? Or perhaps more controversial. I can imagine that would cause a lot of anxiety when attending socials

There’s a girl called Jing I really like! She studies at one of the Ivy League unis in America but did a year in Oxford. My only grumble is she doesn’t have loads of videos to watch which is probably a good thing for me as I’d just watch her instead of studying most likely.

I did wonder about briefly this as well. She did mention that she was recognised when she was first starting Exeter and she found it a bit strange. I don't know if she would have many of her peers know who she is in Oxford, perhaps more of the first-year undergraduates than the postgraduates.

Jing's videos were amazing! But it makes sense how someone who is actually busy studying and living their life will post only short videos and more spread out.

Also, I really hope those books she's holding are not library books.... but the color of the pages on the hardback kind of confirms it. You can see the water soaking into the edges .

Where I work, we are frequently told not to wear our lanyards outdoors (or not have them visible if we do) for safety and security reasons. I don’t think it’s a good idea for Ruby to be advertising to all and sundry that she’s a student of the university, for the sake of her personal safety.
