This makes literally no sense? Yes, quotes can be taken in different ways, but Ruby is just flat out ignoring the context surrounding it and acting as if Orwell was trying to say something ambiguous when in reality his meaning couldn't be clearer.
Hahaha was just about to post this - honestly think I would have just deleted whe whole post and pretend it never happened... I also can't quite make sense of what she has written, it's a lot of words but I'm not sure what she's actually on about?!

As a non-native English speaker, it amazes me how often Ruby makes mistakes, which I could expect from my higher-level students (I teach English as a second language), not from a native speaker who studies English lit
It's amazing. Even if you don't remember the quote specifically, once you learn it's from George Orwell it should shed some light on its actual meaning. Ethanol is IN alcoholic drinks, so Ruby mixing the two is not correct either..
