At least this vlog was short, I guess? That's the only positive I have.
Just in case you didn't realise from the endless spamming of photos on Ruby's Instagram of herself sitting at a table in Italy with an unread copy of Call Me By Your Name, or by the title of the video telling you she's in Italy, or the on-screen text telling you that she's in Italy, or the video description telling you she's in Italy, Ruby starts by mentioning that she's in Italy. Did she mention she's in Italy? She's in Italy, by the way.
She opens on quick selection of scenic shots soundtracked by rustling wind, the whirring of her camera and the obnoxious sounds of various nearby electrics, because Ruby is incapable of figuring out how basic sound design works even though filmmaking is her primary source of income and she's been doing this shit for 7 years. But Ruby LOVES lyahrrning new things, and ASS-thattics are her entire brand!
Ruby with the Peter Pan complex made sure to find the only child's bed in the building, even if it meant sleeping in a fucking hallway next to the stairs. This also had the added benefit for her of her family being unable to sneak out the front door and ditch her in the middle of the night, since she'd always hear them coming.
"Hallo it's Ryoobee and tyoday oiy'm gyowing tyoo be sharing a munning routine with yoo. SYO. Moi family and oiy are corrantly on hyoliday IN...(drum roll please)...the sath of Italy? It's ABSYOLYOOTLEE BYOOTAFL HYAHHR."
Ruby's fabricated accent seems to have gotten even worse in a non-English-speaking country, possibly as a way to try to assert her fake-posh dominance over the locals.
"I am collecting a beautiful moment here," Ruby puts on screen.
Only the framing and composition's all fucked up, and "collecting a beautiful moment" is the kind of thing a serial killer would say when creeping around in someone's yard in the middle of the night with a Polaroid camera.
Also note how she says she's "collecting" a moment; she is in no way enjoying that moment, as evidenced by the perpetual, sullen grandma frown slapped on her face.
Ruby bodychecks her way though her morning looking like a malnourished orphan child with some kind of Benjamin Button aging disease.
She slaps together footage that we've seen millions of times before. "AND THAN" she did this, "AND THAN" she did that. And "OF CWAORSE" she made her "bad". And in Rubyspeak, "making a bed" still just means "haphazardly tossing the bedding about a bit".
Ruby's thesaurus of flowery words that she doesn't understand was evidently lost at the airport, because everything's "beee-YOOT-ifl" - the house, the balcony, the country. She takes a cold shower and then gets dressed without drying her hair for some reason, soaking her clothes.
Predictably, she waves around her copy of Call Me By Your Name. She claims to be re-reading it and that this book was responsible for her wanting to come to Italy, but we all know she never read it then and certainly won't be reading it now. Her imagination is just so feeble and withered away to nothing that this is the only book which she knows takes place in Italy, and therefore she brought it along as a prop and hasn't stopped showing it in almost every picture of her in Italy, because she's incapable of just living her own life and always has to be recreating something "ASS-thattic" from a book that other people enjoyed.
"AND THAN" she goes to pretend to read outside on the balcony, but her hair's instantly dry and her outfit is magically different.
Even more embarrassing, she got her mummy to play camera operator for this footage. Because nothing says "enjoying your holiday" quite like indulging the immature, pantomime fantasies of your mentally enfeebled charity thief daughter and helping her fake her way through life. And nothing says "I'm JANUINELY reading a book" like having your parent filming over your shoulder while you mindlessly flip through pages.
And if you weren't already 1,000,000% certain that Ruby was lying her ass off about reading/re-reading the book, she then mentions that her family got peaches (the only food in the house for some reason).
Maybe it's me, but given the infamous peach scene in the book, if I were the delicate flower that Ruby presents herself as, there's no way I'd be eating a peach after reading that book, especially on camera.
She doesn't just eat that peach, she absolutely smashes the fucking thing into her face.
There's zero chance you wouldn't make the connection. You'd either avoid eating it, eat it off-camera or you'd at the very least make reference to the peach scene in the book, knowing that everyone who actually read the book or watched the movie (and, hell, many who didn't) are going to make the connection and raise one hell of an eyebrow.
But Ruby didn't even spot the glaring connection between the book and peaches, because she never read the book either in "TWANTY TWANTY" or now and only did the barest skim of a synopsis. Her entire knowledge of the book is likely: It's set in Italy and peaches are eaten.
At some indeterminate point in time before or after, she also has the world's smallest, driest toast and then mentions that she brought a horde of tea with her. Otherwise, how would she show off more undeclared ads for gifted products?
"AHHFTAH THAT"...
Ruby's outfit instantly transforms into her earlier, crinkled-as-fuck, never-ironed-ever one. Her hair's soaking wet again and she's conjured up a magical layer of Pennywise clown makeup/sunblock on her face and nowhere else, because that's how the sun works.
"Oiy've bin troying to dyooo a liddle bid of JAHRNalling? Koind of loiyke mourning pages oiy suppyose, whaaahr you johst BLAART OUT awl of your thoughts...AND...re-FLACKSHUNS. Becoss being on holiday is a slurr pace of loyfe."
All of Ruby's thoughts:
If her pretending to read Call Me By Your Name and making her entire holiday all about a book she never read wasn't enough, she also pretends to listen to the soundtrack to the movie, too.
Ruby just loves "SOOF-JOHN STEVENS".
She makes a point to brag that she's making a point not to plan or schedule things on her holiday, even though her entire holiday has been an embarrassing, rehearsed performance and she's spent almost all of it faking her life on-camera instead of just seeing the sights, going to the beach and having fun.
And even though she's apparently not planned it, she's still just filling her time with pointless busywork, even on holiday.
Ruby's privileged enough to go on holiday for a week+ to a gorgeous country and she just wastes her time there writing drivel as she pretends to use the shitty products she slaps her name on.
She's also back to embellishing her involvement with PONKIN' PRODOCKTIVTEA and is now saying it's HER website for HER notebook, designed by HER. Y'know, even though her management company still owns and runs the website and the company, and the "design" (such as it is) was slapped together by an unpaid intern of Sixteenth using the most basic-ass stationery templates. It looks like every dot grid notebook ever, only poorer quality and 90 times the price.
After another spontaneous outfit change, Ruby's gone for "BRACKFSST". She says this is sometimes with her dad, sometimes with her mum, sometimes with other random family members (she's already forgot that Martha exists again), but this time it was her dad, because "the others weren't up YAT". Even though her mum was filming her earlier. Even though there's been several hours in this "day" already. Mmkay. And how long is this fucking holiday that anyone needs a morning routine, or that "sometimes" she has an Italian breakfast with any combination of her family? What a pile of horseshit.
Ruby has a "SOY MILL CAPPOCHINO" and her dad "johst got an ASSPRASSO".
"AND THAN" she sat on the balcony again and "did some creative wroiyting" - "creative" being the operative word for how she uses the English language.
She has her mummy film her hammering away randomly at keys because remember, this is a holiday! She's switched off! Relaxation is happening!
Another outfit switcheroo happens as Ruby says she's going to show off what's in her beach bag, for some reason.
The thick, pronounced line of sunblock is clearly visible - she's painted it on like a mask and it stops at her jawline. No sunblock anywhere else. Remember when Ruby claimed that she understood how the world worked on a molecular level because she studied science at A-Level? This rock-headed dunce doesn't even grasp the basic idea of sunburn.
Most of what she says in this section is almost entirely inaudible because, again, she doesn't understand how sound works in video, so it's just a garbled cacophony of background noise. I think she says she took a bikini, a "cardigan for Lisa"?, Call Me By Your Name (of course, can't go anywhere in Italy without the book prop she'll never read), her Kindle, a notebook and pen, a pack of playing cards, a "GYO PRYO" and airpods.
She also claims she takes hand sanitiser and a face mask, even though she cares less about hygiene and Covid safety than she does about charitable causes.
Oh, wait, it wouldn't be a Ruby video without random irrelevant bullshit crammed into an unrelated video!
Her narration in this section is sped up to the point of incoherence. Long story short: She claims she took books to read, but it's debatable if she even knows how.
Some people expected an overseas holiday to be the start of some kind of growth for Ruby, but this is the same arrested development nonsense as she wastes a holiday with all the same flimsy lies and performative nonsense she shoves in every other video.
Ruby is still a strong contender for the stupidest person I've seen on YouTube, and there's people on there who eat out of toilets.
To pull the thread back on topic a bit: what is Ruby going to do now? Full disclosure, I don't hate Ruby. I find her content cosy and nice, and it's been interesting to watch someone at a similar point in their life to mine. But I find myself wondering what next. I've noticed a lot of the things in her content that a lot of people here (who harbour a lot more vitriol towards her than I do) such as her regression after moving back in (and her weightloss )
Her childishness is something I more or less like. I think that embracing ones inner child in order to extract more enjoyment from the world is never a bad thing, and if you find it cringe we shall just have to agree to disagree. However, I do think it has already started to get in the way of her content. I came back to her recently, and looking over her last year or two of content that I missed, I was rather startled to find back to school content, morning "routines" and "whats in my bag" videos. For a student entering her fourth year of higher education that is not so much childish as juvenile. I grew out of a lot of this during first year.
It makes me wonder what her content is going to be, now. She's made a brand on being this "relatable cosy smart study girl" but like, it's clear from reading these threads and even just having watched her house announcement when it went out that this isn't who she is. I think she worries that, if she starts to drop this persona, she will start to drop her viewership. I don't think that would happen. I would definitely be a more consistent watcher of her content if she just relaxed into being her privileged self a bit more and stopped pretending. While she was at university, maintaining this persona was still feasible, as a lot of us (myself until recently included) didn't pick up on the inconsistencies and issues that showed she wasn't painting the full picture. However, now she has left, I can't see her "study-life" being at all realistic without considerable tweaks?
You guys say a lot of stuff I find thoroughly objectionable, and a bit mean, but you also have good points every now and again.
I think the childishness when it regards Ruby is just concerning though. She still lives in her childhood bedroom (where she wanted her double bed replaced to a single), plays around in the garden, has no desire to be independent and has no life for herself. She's been to uni for 4 years and couldn't last longer than a week or two at best before needing to go home. Even on days out for her dissertation work, she had to have her mum drive her and be in the carpark or "find something to do". It's both selfish and shows an alarming lack of independence for her age. She's 22, yet she can't even do a daytrip alone. Plenty of people her age have done some form of solo travelling or at least something on her own, yet the thought of Ruby being even 10 miles away from her parents on her own would probably send her into a nervous breakdown. That'll be reinforced even more when she has a year to be at home by herself and able to rely on her parents that much more.
It's good to have a great relationship with your parents, but not when it's unhealthy. It's not even fair to blame them either as Martha shows she's independent, lives on her own and has a source of income. Ruby getting an actual job would do wonders, but it'll never happen.
As for what she'll do next, she's clearly trying to follow the Jack Edwards blueprint of branching into "BookTube". As much as I find him incredibly cringe, he's got an audience and does read/forms his own opinions. Ruby is trying to copy that model but displays much less original thought. So she'll take this year to go down that niche and write her book, which is more than likely to turn out disastrously. After that, she'll go back to the original content with a Masters, but if she's doing a "what's in my pencil case" at 24, it'll be beyond laughable.
I think the facts are, most of Ruby's audience (and ditto Jade, Jack, Eve etc) have grown up with them and moved past their content. Holly Gabrielle is a prime example of that. She got a 1st from Cambridge and did a Master's at UCL, yet has wasted all that to continue to make shoddy YouTube videos to an average of 10k views. It's completely stale and such a waste.
Me thinks Ruby should spend more time researching gov funding into libraries etc before heading straight to her Instagram to preach at her followers for not using them Marcus Rashford she is not
I said it last time she went off ranting about how we all need to appreciate libraries and the important service they provide, but if she loves libraries so much, maybe she should actually do something worthwhile. Instead, she's preaching from her podium of privilege while she and her tax-dodging Tory family undoubtedly vote for a government who reduce funding to public libraries over and over.
She never actually does anything for her library. She never volunteers her time. Never donates any of the books she never reads. She just borrows books she won't read to horde on her shelf, depriving others of the opportunity to borrow them, treats the books she touches like shit, then makes comments about how small the selection at her local library is, like last time.
She could buy a selection of new release books every month and donate then. She could pledge her time. She could use her platform to organise a fundraiser, or raise awareness for the dire lack of funding for local libraries. She could highlight which party to vote for in upcoming local elections to increase public funding for local libraries. Instead, nah. This twirling Tory does absofuckinglutely nothing with her mountain of money and wide open schedule of free time, then preaches to us that we should do more.
As someone who is overjoyed with a 65 i cannot grasp why she is disappointed with a 74 I can only dream of such a mark. She’s done really well but ngl I’m secretly glad she’s not happy with it….it gives me a shred of satisfaction
Today's stories feature Ruby with a "TeuxDeux" tab open. How many random tracker apps and to-do list platforms does she need when she does so little? And how long until Ruby starts another new company with Shopify called "TyooDyoo"?
"not sponsored or affiliated. Notion is just an easy way of sharing information!"
No, Ruby. The internet is an easy way of sharing information. Notion is a company that paid you to make several ad videos for them. Even if they didn't pay you for this one, YOU ARE SUPPOSED TO DECLARE THAT PAST PARTNERSHIP. That's how brand deals work. You know this.
Unsurprisingly, most of this Notion page supposedly meant for "useful" study links is just ads and affiliate links. Why is any of that there? What do shitty teas, phone cases and faux-Victorian clothing have to do with productivity, planning and studying?
Ruby acting like she's being VARRY transparent when shilling products, neglects to mention all the free shit they all keep sending her as payment for advertising, or why she keeps shoving undeclared ads for all of them in all her videos.
Ruby has joined the modern internet and created a Linktree. 'My Favourite Tea Shop' leads to an affiliate link for Bard 'n' Bland. Nowhere is this declared. Nowhere are her brand ties to Bird and Blend declared.
"I'm a little stuck with my book. Can people send 350 pages of narrative fiction about a girl who is VARRY, VARRY smart and admired by all her teachers but is bullied by all teenagers because they're VARRY JALLOSS of how intelligent she is? It's just that little bit that I'm stuck on."
Ruby needs to do the right thing and call this literary-reference-spouting character Mya Instagram-Followers, since that's who's writing everything for her.
It's definitely just because she's gone 80s=Stranger Things. I can think of several books with similar vibes to Stranger Things that have a deeper connection than being set in the same decade.
I mean Stranger Things is quite explicitly inspired by Stephen King's books, particularly It. Like, it's not subtle lol anyone who's seen Stranger Things and has at least a vague idea of what It is about would recognize that.
I find it hilarious to imagine that she's never actually read 1984 and she's fully convinced it's set in the '80s (like, our '80s, not the dystopian 1984 Orwell imagined). I see no other reason to connect Stranger Things with 1984. And considering the weird way she's used 1984 quotes before it's quite obvious she's not familiar with it.
I also don't understand what exactly qualifies her to come back and teach the students there? Like, at my school we sometimes had alumni coming in to talk about their careers and stuff - but those were people in their 40s/50s who had achieved some impressive/interesting thing or other. Not a random 22-year old graduate! I mean great, Rooby's managed to complete a bachelor's degree in English - but if they were to invite every former student who managed to get a bachelor's degree they'd have alumni speaking there multiple times every day! And even if they want to have 22-year old guest speakers, maybe it would be a good idea to use this to get some diversity in? Like get your students to listen to some interesting guest speakers from different backgrounds, who perhaps had a harder time making it in the educational system. But instead they invite the local millionaire's daughter sh.
And it's even more bizarre since she isn't even a Shakespeare expert by any stretch of the imagination - her interest is the Victorian period! Make it make sense! (sorry for the rant but the more I think about this the more it annoys me)
Unless you're Amy Sherman Pallandino, it is usually highly advised that you avoid having your characters speak in pop culture. It is immersion breaking, it dates a book, and nobody speaks like that in real life. Readers are not stupid -- they know you're doing it because you have no wit, and so need to rely on not only other people's work but the reader's knowledge of another person's work, to be funny.
I just realised I'm assuming Penultimate is male, but I don't think we know that for sure? Hope they're not family, can you imagine?! They've probably gone to Italy to escape.
For anyone without Instagram, here's the white dress we were talking about. It's one of the nicest things I've seen Ruby wear.
Ruby accepted the money, came up with every dubious, dodging excuse she could to avoid giving it back, kept it for a fucking year and only claimed to have returned it because it was days before the next HMD and she knew that a renewed backlash was coming. There's been zero proof that she actually returned it, or any explanation as to what work she was actually doing with that money in that year besides buying tea and fucking candles. She clearly did everything she could to keep it and hoped that people would forget she had it.
"Reinvesting back" into the same charity you took money from is not a thing that happens. You say "no thanks, I'll do this for free". You pay for your imaginary vanity projects with your own money. You only accept money and wait a year to give it back if you always intended to keep it.
And that's not even the first and last time she took money from a charitable organisation.
Ruby accepted money from the NHS.
She pledged all ad revenue from multiple videos to Ditch the Label and Unicef and encouraged people to watch all the ads. She's refused to say how much money people helped generate, has never shown proof that any money was donated, and blocks and deletes people who ask about it. She kept that fucking money.
Her lies and dodgy excuses about her ads for OTE conservation charity made it obvious she took money from them, too.
Ruby has never done anything for any charity when there wasn't payment involved (the lone exception being the Ukraine fundraiser that she had to be dragged kicking and screaming by her agency to take part in to earn some good will). She's an utter fucking scumbag.
Congrats Ruby, you got a First! Give yourself a smug pat on the back.
Now go back to sitting in your bedroom and deluding yourself you're going to be the next JK Rowling. All it takes is the right publisher to realize and praise her for her true talents! As she said, she would've gotten a higher mark if only she had a different marker. Solution? Submit your work to 100 people, just see where it sticks!
This whole DEPACLE reminds me of Holly Gabrielle, who graduated TOP of her class in Cambridge. Now look at her. It's a shame- because she COULD do great things in her field but doesn't. Ruby, on the other hand, WANTS to but CAN'T for the life of her.
This may sound harsh, but I don't think her mark is impressive at all. For all the hours and hours she spends on studying and only studying, the LEAST she could get is a First. It'll be so embarrassing if she didn't.
I’m calling it now. We’ll get a super dramatic, big teary-eyed thumbnail. She’ll pretend to be humble and not sure how she did blabla. We will then see her opening her results for the “first time” and of course she get’s a first and *acts surprised*.
Bonus points if she says something within that video or in her instagram post about it, that immediately lets you wonder how the fuck she managed to get a first.
Extra bonus points if she cries because of something ridiculous like her dissertation only being a 71.
Do we believe she actually had 13k words of something just simply stored away?
Also, Rhubarb, I wish I had time to learn languages and write, but I work all day, cook myself dinner, shower and barely have time to browse on here before I sleep. But please, tell me more about prioritizing.
