Just went on Goodreads to find Ruby's review of CMBYN and noticed these ratings. There are no reviews, so I don't know why they weren't given higher ratings.

The fun thing about "Call me by your name" and Ruby being so inspired by it that she travelled to Italy is....it's set in Northern Italy, like, a ten hour drive from where she is. I'm pretty sure the book and the movie are known for this. So she couldn't even travel to somewhat close to the book's setting, because to her Italy is just Italy, everywhere's the same. So cultured.

I guess her parents planned the holiday and she just shoe-horned in the Call Me By Your Name thing on her social media, so that's why the destination doesn't exactly fit the theme. They just planned a holiday to the Amalfi Coast and Ruby only heard "Italy" and went straight to Call Me By Your Name because that's the only piece of media set in or about Italy she's ever consumed. She probably didn't notice that it's set in a completely different part of the country lol

I’m not sure where people are from so I hope not to offend anyone. I grew up very close to where Ruby lives and no one spoke like that. No one. And when you hear “upper class/super posh” people speaking the Queen’s English, they still sound nothing like Ruby’s cultivated and incredibly peculiar accent. The older she’s got, the more extreme it has become and the more her spoken word has revealed how she doesn’t understand many of the 6+ letter words she uses. I just don’t think she is especially clever and she’s stalled at a-level standard, where it is primarily about rote learning and regurgitation. She’s found a way round uni - learning by rote, only not just text but other peoples notes and ideas. She’s selected modules that have structured essay questions where she can gather everyone else’s work and reword it. And the one piece that requires self-guided, analytical and critical thought and prose, has been exceptionally hard and challenged her identity. Hence the downplaying of the importance of education/study…the very basis on which every single blog up to this time has been about.

That was a bit of a splurge - sorry. Clearly grumpy about going to work tomorrow after the 4 day weekend.

And what the fuck are "queue cutters"? Like, literally, people who cut in front of you in a queue/line?

Knowing that she's in Italy at the moment, and knowing how many of my fellow countrymen are regarding queues, my guess is it happened like the day before while she was getting food or something and she was still bitter about it lmao like, it's a huge stereotype that Italians are big queue-cutters, but it's a thing lol. And I immediately thought of that when I read 'queue-cutters'
Someone in the Granger family got cut off in a line and probably made a huge deal out of it

I don't want to shame Ruby for her (possible) asexuality because I don't see it as one of the problematic things about her. Her discomfort around the subject is probably a symptom of her social anxiety and relative immaturity and/or insecurity. It only becomes an issue when she starts judging other people for their preferences. I think she has done this in the past, e.g. looking down on students who go to parties, wear makeup, drink alcohol, etc. Maybe she's growing out of that attitude now.

I have no problem mocking this hilarious review though.

You can DAFFINATELY tell she JANUINELY read it by her thorough and in-depth review, which isn't at all suspiciously vague and completely incoherent:

The writing is rich and dormant. Dormant like a volcano? How very lyrical.

Past, present and future intercept. I think she means 'intersect' but let's go with intercept...

The past, present and future have been intercepted somehow...but how?

The book doesn't just contain memories, it is etched with them. The memories are 'immediate' but also 'distant' and this contradiction is never explained.

Their relationship is 'carnal and abstract' plz stop this.

Distances: A Special, Unique and Productive Ruby Granger Poem

Stanza 1:
Some distances are far.
These distances stretch into the distance like olive farms on the distant horizon.
In distant Italy, amongst lawless gelato-grabbing crowds, we pondered the precepts,
the dramatic distant beauty of cucumbers and rocks;
fragmented, in coves, only enjoyable in the afternoons.
Quiscent peaches scattered on the tables: they are enjoyable at any time.
Peaches are quite common ackshually. I may edit this section out. But then where will I put the word quiscent? What to do? #rubyedits #ihateediting

Stanza 2:
When the world is not distant
That is because it is near.
Near things are my favourite things: my parents, my house, my sad study desk,
that one field with the frightening alpaca.
The alpaca stares into my soul and I wish it were distant-er.
The nearness of things amazes me
because they're not far away
or wide or distant or tiny
they are zoomed in like a camera.

Stanza 3:
But in the distance it is a depacle
where alpacas eat laundry, heathens cut queues,
in the distance everything is moving
including the rocks from the mountains
'Mummy, why are those bullies throwing rocks at us?'
The universe has no answer
Just the plop plop plopping as the stones bounce off my head

I am sorry but I cannot get over her recent story where she says "one of my characters makes literary references whenever she can" and then asks for references because she can't think of any... Ruby, I will give you the most cliched creative writing workshop advice: WRITE WHAT YOU KNOW. You cannot write about bookish characters because you are not one. You are incapable of reading and making sense of adult books. Write about characters who steal from charities? That's your forte.

It's also, a) aggravating and annoying when characters are constantly making literary references, because they add nothing to the story, b) it feels like the author is just trying to show off how well-read they are, and c) it's unrealistic. People who are passionate about literature still don't walk around referencing literature every other sentence. And Ruby would know that if she actually interacted with literature lovers in real life lol

The sheer privilege of this caption. Ruby is in a position where she CAN literally take a year off to write. She doesn’t have to think about rent, bills, getting a job… or writing a book that will secure a publishing deal purely on merit (even her agent is pushing her influencer status).
News flash, Ruby, some people do NOT have the luxury of making time for the thing they love each day, because they actually have to adult!
I also felt this was a pretty bad example for the premise of her post, as she is doing it “all of the time”, so this was hardly the best example to pick for the premise of her post, which is about making time each day, however small, for something you love…

I'm new to working full-time/adulting (thanks, pandemic). And I barely have time to eat, shower, browse on my phone for an hour or two before I'm exhausted and have to go to bed because I work the next day.
I'm always feeling like i should do an hour or two of hobbies/work (writing, reading, learning languages) after I get home; and part of it is society, and me being a perfectionist. But it's also content like hers. Even though I know she's a fraud, her fraudulent productivity is the one I dream of, since I've lost so much time to mental illnesses.
It's really hard to deprogram yourself from hustle culture, even though I know most productivity influencers are faking it or lead very privileged lifestyles, and aren't working a regular office job.

Got to say though, I'm not totally comfortable with these posts on discord. It feels more bullying when it's in a place she set up and still visits. Yes I know we say pretty much the same things here, but it's different when the comments are in 'her' spaces. I'm not phrasing this very well but hopefully people know what I mean.

Yeah, totally agree. If people want to post critical stuff on her platforms, then they have every right and reason since she does so much so often that's worthy of legitimately being called out for, but there's a way to do that constructively and civilly where she can't just dismiss it as nasty bullying (I mean, she's going to anyway, but still).

I'm not a fan of just taking name-calling directly to her. At least here, it's very clearly intended as a gossipy, critical place meant for that and Ruby and her fans are free to ignore it all if she doesn't want to read it.

Ruby has a lot of annoying traits, but if she gets a first (which we're all 99% sure she has), there's no point of being bitter or asking how she got that. Not only has she used all resources (Blakeney, tutors, academic journals) to the maximum (as ethical or unethical as that may be), but we also honestly have no indication how good she is as an academic writer. We've seen her research and snippets but that doesn't paint the whole picture of what her work is like and at the end of the day, it's anonymously graded, so if she gets a first, she was ultimately deserving of one.

Congratulations Ruby. A first from a prestigious uni is something to brag about, perhaps just don't waste it with pretentious busywork and frolicking in make belief land now. Go and actually do something worthwhile because you're evidently capable.

Nah sorry I don't buy it. She's constantly making blunders about her own field of study, embarrassing grammar and spelling mistakes, misusing words just to sound smarter, her Goodreads review are complete gibberish, we've seen how bad she is at creative writing and poetry, every glimpse she's shown of her dissertation was a disaster, and she spent her degree doing everything in her power to avoid reading anything challenging.
If she was studying anything else I would give her the benefit of the doubt. You know, maybe she makes grammar mistakes and she's not good at writing and book reviews, but who knows how good she is at Engineering or Law or whatever. But she studied English Literature. There's no doubt in my mind she doesn't deserve a First

Erimenthol would win hands down, she has proven resistant to needle stabs while Lottie’s hands are bloody from too much washing and picking, she probably couldn’t take a decent swing. Plus she’s probably undereating.

I didn't really get why she was recommending 1984 for Stranger Things, it's a great book, don't get me wrong, but there's a lot more that come to mind first before I would go for 1984. Am I missing something obvious?
