This discussion pops up from time to time on this thread usually regarding JK Rowling and honestly, I think this is a chronically online take.
I googled this controversy and it seems the author has liked a few tweets about the importance of acknowledging the existence of biological sex, it didn’t make news headlines (or spark outrage anywhere else other than twitter) and Ruby doesn’t even use twitter anyway. So personally I don’t really think I could criticize her for not knowing or caring about a few mildly controversial liked tweets before she reviewed the book.

It was definitely spoken about on instagram (at the time, anyway) as that's how I found out about it, I don't really use twitter regularly. Obviously not so much now because it was a while ago and probably also the fact that liking tweets is definitely less severe than the actions of (like you say) JK Rowling, although still questionable. I wasn't necessarily criticising her for reviewing the book giving a plot summary and describing the writing as beautiful and cosy, it's mainly because because I was an active follower of 'bookstagram' at the time Collins was liking the tweets/the discussion was popular, everyone was pissed and so that was my experience of it, rather than hearing about it a year later on a gossip forum fully appreciate people are entitled to read and review what they want but I don't really think it's 'chronically online' if someone makes a personal decision to not support an author that has previously exhibited 'harmful' behaviour (however they subjectively define it)

Has anyone here read We Were Liars? Interested to know if it's popular due to BookTok hype or if it's genuinely a good story.

I did and hated it .Didn’t like the writing style or the story. You can guess the end from the first few chapters.

I think Ruby could have used her time at university to broaden her horizons but if I remember correctly it seems like every year she stuck to her narrow areas of 'interest' (albeit fake and superficial interest). I am sure Exeter offers classes that teach Virginia Woolf but Ruby tended to stick to courses about Shakespeare and Dickens, and obvs anything to do with the Victorians since she was so obsessed with everything victorian childhood and etiquette for a couple of years I'm sure other students on her course read much more widely than she did.

Tragic. She is so repressed. It's as though she just looks at lists of essential classics curated by middle aged white men who are completely out of touch and she tries to create this persona of someone who has read each and every single one. It's so cringe.

I'm not even that much of a literature enthusiast I just would have assumed Virginia Woolf would be part of a lit 101 class. She mentions Sylvia Plath often, who is going to tell her Plath has a history of anti semitism as she often compared her pain to that of the Holocaust, and her writing alludes to white supremacy. Not to mention the archetype of the woman as a vessel for pain is misogynistic. I almost pity Ruby except that it’s so easy to find good and varied reading lists on, like, goodreads alone, she has every opportunity to widen her scope a bit, but she is just an insufferable conservative bore

I think she mentioned in a recent video that she’s able to publish something of hers in an undergraduate academic journal. When she does I wonder if we can find it and see what she “really” writes like. But it could also be that internship thing that she did which means she probably didn’t write any of it herself.

This isn't that difficult to be honest. Undergraduate journals are not highly discerning when it comes to submissions. So long as you have something of a correct length and seems coherent they'll take it. That's to say nothing of "pay-to-publish" journals which are a big problem atm (though I am not accusing her of using one of these.)

I think you're giving her too much benefit of doubt. Just a few days ago, she showed us a piece of her writing, which she thought was publishable quality- it had basic PUNCTUATION mistakes. Forget about grammar, tone, style, etc. because one could argue those are subjective. But her writing is just objectively horrendous, no matter how you look at it.

And I've watched 90% of her videos for years, not ONCE has she had an interesting or original "hot take" on anything. She just (inaccurately) regurgitates historical facts, or directly plagiarizes other people (just see that Van Gogh reference in the Paris video). There's too much evidence she ISN'T deserving of a First.

She's the only person I know whose imposter syndrome is actually justified. I'm hoping she goes for a Master's, it'll humble her a bit at least.

If she can regurgitate some intelligent sounding essays in exams (did she sit any exams, or was it all assignments? I didn't really watch her uni content after first year.) she'll do well. English Lit is difficult to get less than a 2:1 in, and with a bit of effort and memorisation of arguments a first is easily within reach. With the volume of students at university nowadays it has really become impossible to properly coach all of them to original thought, and hence university essay are increasingly about pulling the right levers to get a first (despite what the grading criteria might say.) An 80 is the new 75 and all that.

At any rate, she uploaded her video about her oxford rejection the day after it happened, so I reckon if we don't hear within the next 24hrs or so she has more than likely got a first. She would also be schtum on social media, in a slump about her grade. She hasn't really unlearned her rejection response, which is troubling. Plays into the regression many have noticed since she moved home.

Well I'm sure that now that she's got these stellar grades she's ready to leave the nest to put what she learned to fruition, find an exciting career, expand her horizons, and enjoy intellectually stimulating exchanges with her peers

Didn't she say she wants to do a master? So i don't think she'll stop studying anytime soon..

That wasn't a boast btw, just pointing out that even in academia you don't need the top grade. You don't 'need' it ever, really. I feel quite sorry for these weird study youtubers really, they spend their whole lives studying and coveting top grades when in the real world literally nobody is going to care

I think they work like this because of their brand. I mean if you make a study channel /productivity channel, you have to prove that your advices work....
It's like if you do a dieting /sport channel and you're unfit, it won't work .

I've never been to Pompeii (I wish!) but my mum has and I think she told me that you can actually see the casts of the dead bodies that were found in the city petrified by the ashes. I don't know if they are still on display when you go there but I've definitely seen pictures online and stuff. It's quite a famous aspect of the site and one you can't really ignore

Yes they're in the archaeological museum near Pompeii. They are certainly not exquisite.

I suppose kind of like how Eugenia Cooney talks in this awfully high pitched voice, when some years ago (before she was super ill) she talked in her more natural lower voice .

Lol at Ruby saying the Vintage Minis must be new because she's never seen them before. I've seen those loads and I don't go to bookshops four times a week like she does. A quick look online shows they've been out since at least 2019. Good job, bookworm.

I own the Salman Rushdie one and that came out in 2017. There are probably newer ones but the series is at least 5 years old. Of course not everyone knows every book, but not very on brand for her.

Nah sorry I don't buy it. She's constantly making blunders about her own field of study, embarrassing grammar and spelling mistakes, misusing words just to sound smarter, her Goodreads review are complete gibberish, we've seen how bad she is at creative writing and poetry, every glimpse she's shown of her dissertation was a disaster, and she spent her degree doing everything in her power to avoid reading anything challenging.
If she was studying anything else I would give her the benefit of the doubt. You know, maybe she makes grammar mistakes and she's not good at writing and book reviews, but who knows how good she is at Engineering or Law or whatever. But she studied English Literature. There's no doubt in my mind she doesn't deserve a First

I get what you’re saying entirely, but I think my point is that seeing as we haven’t seen the entirety of an essay and have her whole portfolio in front of us, it’s hard to say outright “she doesn’t deserve a first”.

Has she used everything to her advantage and probably not done it off her own back? Most likely. At the end of the day though, if it’s graded anonymously and it’s all of her work over a 2 year period, she ultimately deserves the grade she’s got.

Not like she’ll take advantage of it anyway, it’ll just be a talking point as she stays at home.

"Quiescent" means that, but master wordsmith Ruby misspelled it. "Quiscent" means nothing at all, which is the icing on the stupidity cake. She's literally picking flowery words and plonking them down into sentences to make herself seem smarter, but it only ever calls attention to her misstakes and misunderstanding of most words and their meanings and makes her look especially dumb.

Oh well yes, of course. I clearly misspelt the word too but my excuse is I had a migraine (which affects my vision & ability to write/type)
