Definitely a reach imo. I looked up the tweets you’re talking about and all they say is that sex exists and that women are human. Not exactly a marginal view and I can’t imagine many people were offended by her liking them.
I know a lot of young people in the (often toxic) book ‘community’ on Twitter, insta and book TikTok look to authors and books as a moral compass, and seem to get great pleasure out of harassing authors who don’t hold particular points of view, but Ruby doesn’t appear to engage with these communities. You can’t expect a person to care or know about the actions and opinions of every author they read. The average person does not do that, nor does the average person have an “author blacklist”.

Thanks for this . I have heard a lot of Booktubers etc say Bridget Collins is problematic , cancelled and wont even say her name or say things like I loved nearly all the stories in this collection but I wont read or promotes hers in it. I could never pin down exactly what she was meant to have done. The same Booktubers rave over Susan Hill and her tweets are massively unpleasant . They also continually fawn over Akwake Emezi who has some very problematic behaviour including attacking goodreads users who give her negative reviews...

Noo, she's insufferable. Actually think she's even more pretentious than Ruby, just in a very different way. Those emojis were accurate. Especially this They have the same management? That explains a lot.

She even has a Paris video too! I think we should crowdfund an apartment for Dakota, Ruby, Jack and Jade so they all get to be flatmates far away from me.

Hahaha the idea of Ruby being flatmates with this girl! I can imagine all the passive-agressive post-it notes to please clean after herself and not be noisy in her room after 9pm. Meeting random hookups as they sneak out in the morning...

Actually I don't know anything about her so I don't know if she'd be like that lol. She seems a bit conceited and annoying but at least it looks like she's enjoying her life.

Here’s my prediction, I reckon she has got a first, but it’s a low first and because she’s so arrogant and was expecting it to be publishable, she’s mega disappointed and that’s why she hasn’t posted yet. Either way, I don’t think she will tell us the exact mark for it, unless it’s like insanely good.

I did wonder if she would post her transcript (the breakdown of her grades for all modules) or if she'd just tell us her overall mark.

No of course, I understand that people might have been upset by it, especially if they’re trans rights activists and were big fans of this author, to learn that she didn’t agree with their views would obviously be a bit of a blow.
By ‘chronically online’, I didn’t mean you choosing to not support the author, it was more that it seemed you were suggesting that Ruby shouldn’t support her either bc of these liked tweets, when in reality they’re not particularly controversial or openly anti trans. But if you weren’t suggesting that then it doesn’t matter haha

Oh no, that's not what I was suggesting at all! My initial post was mainly me thinking out loud as to whether she would have been aware, although it happened a while ago there are probably a fair few of her fans that may be hurt about the fact she's promoting the book/author which is why I said it might not have been the best thing for her to do. But I totally agree that you can't criticise someone for something they aren't aware of, which is very likely given that it didn't make major headlines or gain any real traction beyond book twitter/bookstagram like you said!

Even if Ruby had this intention I doubt it was going to fly with an agent / potential publishers. A family friend who was a journalist got a book deal recently and her whole twitter became about her book, because her publisher told her it had to. Even if you have a minor online presence (she has around 1000 followers on twitter) you're expected to use it to push initial sales.

The only way would be to do like Jk Rowling with her crime series and send books off to agents / publishers under a pseudonym from the beginning.

Oh 100% but that more links in to the only reason her having the opportunity to publish a book being down to her position as an influencer. It's just disingenuous to say that you don't want YouTube to influence sales because she knows the only reason anyone will buy it is because it's written by her. If she acknowledged that, there would be zero issue.

I never said that I thought it was immoral, I said it was questionable for a rich influencer to take money off a charity in return for promotion when she could literally just do it for free.

And what the fuck are "queue cutters"? Like, literally, people who cut in front of you in a queue/line? Because what's that got to do with any of the rest of the purple prose sea and sky nonsense she's thrown together? I assumed this was some Tory toff expression for yachts or something, but Google says nope. A cutter is a boat. A queue cutter is someone who wants popcorn at the cinema more than you do.
