I think that it actually is a published piece called 'The Shape Shifting Storyteller' (you can find it here) https://lup.lub.lu.se/student-papers/search/publication/1776537 . No idea why it has 'Final Version before PDF' in the title.
I'm still curious to see if Ruby will share anymore of her essay/dissertation though.

Why is Ruby dressed like an ill person? It's late April. Why does she need a long red shawl over her clothes, under her duvet? I know #cosy autumnal aesthetic is her thing and England can be cold, but unless her bedroom has been magically transported to the Arctic Circle, those layers don't make sense! Did anyone else noticed the bouquet of flowers resting on the floor?

She's mourning the loss of the Ukraine charity money she never got the chance to steal.

For real though, I think this is the bouquet of weeds she keeps in a jar on her desk. So she moved the dead weeds and dumped them all over the floor so they wouldn't accidentally knocked off her desk while she was climbing all over it unnecessarily, but didn't think to move any of the glass objects or porcelain mugs, or the upright pens that would impale her if she fell.

This dumbass thought she was going to Oxford when she'd struggle with basic 'Match the shapes!' puzzles you give to toddlers.

Is this a reflection of Exeter or Ruby's limited social circle? I've heard that Exeter has a very white, middle-class student body but surely there must be some international students too?

I can't speak to the Exeter Uni demographic from experience, but the background of Ruby's campus footage make it seem like a pretty diverse student population. I'd definitely be curious to hear how students there have found it, though.

The dead giveaway for me Ruby definitely seeks out people identical to herself (or her idealised, child version of herself) outside of uni as well, though. Her penpal scheme thing could've been a way for her to engage with fans from all walks of life around the world, but instead she rigged it to filter through only young Ruby clones aged 12.

Hilariously, I think Sascha (sp?) is the only person she's spent any length of time with who isn't almost identical to herself, and she's practically a doppelganger of Ruby's sister. It's so weird.

Totally agree with the hair length; it wouldn't do a thing for her vanishing hairline, but a shorter bob would at least make the rest of her lifeless, frazzled hair look more full and healthy. She won't cut it, though, it'd affect her ability to reuse old footage.

This not only rings alarm bells for me, im not quite sure it’s allowed? When u was doing the same degree at the same Uni, we were only allowed 2 official meetings with our supervisor (usually pre and post submission of our 1000 words formative assessment).

I can only conclude that either
a) the rules have changed
b) she’s not telling the truth
c) her tutor is really concerned about the direction of her dissertation
d) she’s somehow convinced her tutor to give her preferential treatment…

I think C is probably the most likely given what we've seen of Ruby's disasterpiece. I know she happily monopolises her tutors' time ordinarily, but I can't see a dissertation supervisor devoting that amount of time to an individual student unless they were clearly going completely off the rails and struggling with the assignment.

Given the amount of irrelevent nonsense Ruby has been shoving in even after multiple meetings, and the fact that she was rushing to hack thousands of words off the word count following her last meeting, I'd say her supervisor's probably getting concerned at what Ruby's handed in so far (or pissed off to be wasting their time on a moron who won't follow basic instruction).

I think Roobie is definitely influenced by Hermione, or sees her as a role model when she does her university dissertation.

In Roobie's mind she is syooo studious and smart with all the "extra curricular" knowledge (like the victorian gift giving and other bs... I can't keep track of them). Just like Hermione and her light reading!

Dear Roobie Doodlie Doo, Hermione is a FICTIONAL character and Harry Potter is a work of FICTION. In real life you aren't going to impress professors by writing extra words and going off tangents that have nothing to do with your dissertation topic or your degree. It is the ability to summarise what you've learnt in concise language and the selection of materials that shows the professor your understanding of the topic. Some folks here mentioned that Roobie is making a poor and unrealistic attempt to fill the gaps of academia with her undergrad dissertation, I think she's doing the complete opposite to what she thinks she's achieving. Roobie should take her undergrad dissertation more seriously if she wanted a good grade, not this play pretend she's doing with her degree. Again, PSA: Axetaaah is not Hogwarts and you're not Hermione, Ruby.

YES. Her hair used to be soo fine (even hair hairline was nice, would you believe it) and at the beginning of university she would at least braid it or do some stuff with it. nowadays it just looks so sad, it’s the same feeling as with her house - i desperately want to go and make something out of all the unused potential. (my hair is crap so i kinda envy her)

Ruby searched the grounds of her estate for hours and hours, but was unable to find any dissertation ideas. Or her marbles.

She's been back home a couple of weeks and already half her content is her playing dress-up in her yard like a deranged child. The only trip she's taking in her gap year is off the deep end.

I'm not from the UK so I'm a bit confused about their university schedule. Why did she go home if her dissertation isn't due until May? Is she still paying rent for a place she's not living? I wonder if Blakeney is still there or if she went home too? At least in the US, we stayed on campus until finals were done.

I agree that its very much of a body check one and I just felt rather uncomfortable with it, it's the first one that has actually really bothered me, I think it's the combination of the too big t-shirt and the leggings that's done it for me.

I'm starting to get a bit bothered by Ruby and I'm finding it hard to kind of hate-watch her at the moment. She must know what effect she has on people. I'm starting to wonder what her new persona is going to be once she leaves uni, just feels like she is getting a bit like Jade with the whole studying is stressful etc rambles she had on her story. I can see her trying to be a bit like Jade with how much she copies Blakeny - though I'm aware it's a bit of a stretch

This is actually really interesting! Someone from my uni actually wrote a paper about straight women consuming mlm fiction and they argued that a lot of women consume this type of media because no woman can get hurt. There is no place for the submission of a woman and thus it’s weirdly freeing. (Obv it is problematic, but I found that really interesting)

There is quite a lot of academic work done on this! Due to the way women have been represented (or NOT represented) in the past, women take on the men and apply their version of romance to them (think Wincest, Sherlock/Watson, Merlin/Arthur and other big gay male pairings from the last however long). It's why we see a lot of hurt/comfort and other types of softness in fanfiction.

Heartstopper falls into this too- the boys are incredibly sweet toward each other to the point where it is a little unrealistic, but it's not written by a man.

Also I have a hard time getting around how that happened and what did they have to do to convince her to take off the tailcoat and show herself in such a "revealing" (to Ruby) dress. Like I feel she would never ever go out in something like that, especially given how awkward she looks, so the whole situation is a bit bizarre to me.

It’s probably not performative. I am making assumptions here but I think she’s uncomfortable around the idea of dating and romance. I also went to a girls school like Ruby and if you’re not sociable outside of school it can lead to you growing up unable to relate to or befriend men, perhaps even a little threatened by them. (Not saying Ruby’s attracted to men though, she could not be!) Romance novels about women or straight relationships might make Ruby uncomfortable and make her question her own feelings and aware of her own inexperience.

As she’s not a man, gay romance novels are unrelatable to her life, it’s basically like a fantasy. She can allow herself to talk about it without any of these expectations or attracting any questions about her own love life. Gay romance is really popular among a lot of teenage girls for this reason.

That's what I think, romance involving women probably feels way too close to home for her and she can't handle it. With male-only romance she can simply pretend that romance is something that doesn't concern her.

I wonder if it's because Ruby doesn't react well to criticism and they don't want to offend her? Some of her outfits look fine, but others make me hope she never ventures out in public like that for her own safety.

I doubt she took a full year to do her dissertation, she started researching topics last summer and spent the last month hastily writing thousands more than she really needed to. It's a hot mess regardless of what she ended up turning in.

She also tried therapy, clearly she was so much smarter than her private therapist that it wasn't worth having mummy pay for.
