I'm still confused about just what her dissertation is about because I've heard her mention letters, gift giving and kindness and apart from letters I'm struggling to see how she's linking it to literature it seems more like a very niche history of The Victorians

I really doubt she's in therapy now, she's spiraling. I'm pretty sure a decent therapist would've suggested inpatient by now.
Are you in America? I'm only asking because inpatient treatment is much rarer in the UK. It's possible to be having a severe episode of mental illness and still be refused inpatient treatment.

From what little you can actually read of the text (the bottom corners of the sheets she places on the windowsill), that dissertation is nowhere near done. It’s clear she’s just Frankensteined a bunch of secondary sources together and the stuff that’s not quotes is poorly written. She’s having to write out the ”logical flow” of her paragraphs in a notebook because she herself has difficulty discerning anything like a logical flow but she’s trying to convince herself it’s there.
Yeah if she herself still has to write out the logical progression of her paragraphs on the seventh draft on her thesis, how could somebody else who reads it possibly be able to follow it and get a clear idea of her argument?

I liked Ruby's older style, especially from her first year of university. Now her style is just a bunch of mismatch items that don't go together. Her Depop like list also doesn't have a direction. She surely has a huge identity crisis. And unpopular opinion, but I don't think dark colours suit her. She looks way too hollow already, and black just makes it worse. I don't even understand why she tries so hard to fit dark academia aesthetic, when she obviously doesn't enjoy studying and reading. And she really should cut her hair to shoulder length, she doesn't take care of her hygiene and long hair is hard to manage, I can't imagine how dirty it is.
She is definitely more suited to vibrant colours, Marfa's pink wig and lipstick looked great on her. I think she sticks to the dark ones because they remind her of her old school uniform so it's a safety blanket in that way. Just like those ugly thick tights she wears under everything.
I bet she considers her struggles with studying and maintaining a fake image to be her secret inner darkness and as such falls under dark academia 😅

that was probably kept off camera
but it's coming, as soon as she gets her grade.
I really need her to use this year off to go do therapy. I know we're not entitled to knowing that kind of private information, but she obviously has some undiagnosed and untreated mental issues. She said she did therapy when she was younger but it seems like she just gave up and that was that?
If she came clean about faking her image and shared her struggles with people openly and honestly, it would have a much greater impact than any productivity video she ever did.

I wonder what's wrong with her hands to make them so red and swollen. I remember her mentioning in a video that she gets to type her exams instead of writing because she can't write (?) with her hands without pain and bleeding (??). It was long ago, somebody please correct me.

Excessive counting of stolen charity cash has worn her hands to nothing.

(I think she's said before that she compulsively washes her hands, but her hands are always dirty so who knows.)

She had a full Hermione outfit she wore too, even at 17. She removed the video though.. maybe it's still somewhere in the depths of the interweb

I think that, (I could be projecting), but I think that the extent that Ruby was bullied at school might have been a bit more teasing from her classmates and I think that she might have been just left out/excluded from things her own age. I think that Ruby might have brought it on herself (sounds cruel as no one deserves to be bullied), but I can see her acting quite childishly and a bit snobby around her classmates and I feel like she would remind the teacher that there was homework to be handed in. I think I read something either from here or from Gurugossip or I made it up, that she would spend time with younger pupils- probably to turn them into mini Ruby's.

I do think that if she was badly bullied I think that she'd would have got a teacher to deal with it and Mother Granger would be right on it judging with how doting she is of Ruby now. I could be wrong though.

I did use to have a bit of a soft spot for Ruby as I could see myself as a teenager in her a bit when I first started watching her videos. I always kind of her saw her as someone who just wasn't sure how to fit in with other students and was probably a bit lonely at school.

To be honest, her (current, lol) dissertation topic felt a bit of a miss to me from the very beginning. I personally find it kind of symptomatic of her very limited grasp of the literary field (although this is coming from a Comparative Literature grad so I might be misunderstanding her course); first off, she is using Carroll's letters as a primary source which is really useless without a properly contextualised research question (as letters are semi-literary at best and were most likely not intended for publication which pends further questioning on their relevancy to the topic) and also, even when she wants to open up topics of epistolary genres, there is the very problem of intent behind them (letters are tricky since, when authentic, they can be either useless without context or with minimal interest to interpretation - and when artificial, there is the whole field of epistolary novel which has absolutely nothing to do with her). So, she'd first have to establish their literary merit and then probably place them within some sort of context to justify her specific choice? Also, will she ever consider any sort of theory of autobiographical discourse? She really shot herself in the foot with this topic imo, it's too broad for an undergraduate and also just really, really...meh. I know her goal was to "contribute something to the scholarship" and this will be either tragically under-researched or just unintelligeble since there are so many tangents to go off and none of them really go anywhere. Oops.
Exactly. After all this time, I think it's telling that we still can't figure out her intended line of argument. Said it a few times before, but I also think it was a big mistake to try and incorporate gift-giving into the dissertation. Oh Ruby, why didn't you choose something related to Victorian girlhood.

This is actually really interesting! Someone from my uni actually wrote a paper about straight women consuming mlm fiction and they argued that a lot of women consume this type of media because no woman can get hurt. There is no place for the submission of a woman and thus it’s weirdly freeing. (Obv it is problematic, but I found that really interesting)
This also plays into a lot of the compulsory heterosexuality a lot of women (esp young, queer women / AFAB people) deal with (liking fictional male characters because they are “safer” than real men) Especially in fandom spaces a lot of queer women tend to write mlm fanfiction because of the idea that no woman is getting hurt and these men are safer than real men.

Confession - I didn't watch her latest video, just read the recap here. But I have thoughts.

She'll associate exclusively with young, blonde white girls, as though she can't bear to look at a world that isn't full of people who look like less desiccated variants of herself.
Is this a reflection of Exeter or Ruby's limited social circle? I've heard that Exeter has a very white, middle-class student body but surely there must be some international students too? Just wondered if any current/former students could shed light on this?

Ruby rambles about how we don't know what it's going to be like to leave academia because we spend our formative years at school. She claims that we form out identities in an academic space and find out our identities while learning. It's abundantly clear that she's completely detached from reality.
It's interesting. This is yet another example of Ruby describing something that applies only to her and assuming it must apply to everyone.

Not the best photo of Ruby, but I think she'd really suit her hair this length. ^

Yet another outfit change, this time for Bite Back, a "Shark Conversation" charity. Don't forget, sharks are people, too. If you have a friend who's a shark who you haven't spoken to in a while, why not reach out and talk to them? If you have elderly shark neighbours who don't get out of the house, drop by and chat with them. A little conversation can really make a big difference for any aquatic creatures who are struggling in their day-to-day life.
HALLO, IT'S ROOBEE. How many books have you read this year? Have YOU tried USING NOTION to TrAck YoR REEading?

Ruby doesn’t seem to have much of an eye for clothes and suffers from that thing of thinking that anything that is ‘old’ works for any period, which is odd given her supposed interest in history. You can see she’s trying to develop her personal style but just goes a bit overboard and puts way too much mismatching stuff together. She’s going for that eclectic vintage style but she just ends up looking like she’s been mugged by an Oxfam donations bag. It’s a shame as she does have some nice pieces but she ends up wearing them all at the same time and it’s too much.

It’s very 90s Home Counties wedding …
If it only were an OXFORD Donations bag.... 😄

Gosh, her scalp is in full view in the thumbline of her new video and...it looks really bad. I was scrolling my Recommended page and had to do a double take when I passed that. I feel sorry for her, I know hair issues are very hard for women to go through

Had this been for an ESL course, even a non-advanced one, she'd have lost points for that. Makes me feel better about my English to be honest to see a native speaker and aspiring writer make this kind of mistakes.

She's either never figured out how cameras work or she’s just that self-absorbed. Whenever she takes mirror photos, she smiles at the phone in her hand rather than looking in the mirror at the lens:

She does this every time.

I get what you’re saying, but individual life experience is alway individual and it’s seldom helpful or even appropriate to compare. (Or generalize, as Roobee does!) I know having a teacher tell me to snap out of my anorexia because there are people in the world who are actually starving wasn’t useful to anyone, idk maybe I’m just overly sensitive 🙃
You’re not overly sensitive, your teacher is an asshole. I hope you’re okay, anorexia is horrible ❤
