She should really be using referencing software! Most university libraries offer info sessions on how to use this software. You can either get a free subscription through your university, or you can download free ones, such as Zotero. She'd be able to make her bibliography in one click.

The chair and the little round table came from her cottage, remember? I guess the tenant had no use for them, so they came home with Roobee. All those years sitting happy in a cottage, only to be destroyed in mere months by unrelenting filth and carelessness. After this, it’ll be the cavernous ”lounge” for them. Someone will sit on the chair for half of Love Actually once a year, come home with a layer of suspicious grime on them, and once again reflect on how it’s never a good idea to sit down away from well-lit areas in the Bones household.

I'm an queer person who has written gay fanfiction for years, and consumes a lot of MLM romance - I think it's interesting that there's a perception that it's just straight women that write this and consume that media. I've definitely called my own intentions into question before because I gravitate towards MLM couples instead of WLW romance, even in mainstream literature. I think a lot of it is fetishism that's more internalised in society, and also because MLM couples were far more visible to me when I was younger than any other type of queer love. I don't think I was aware that lesbianism was actually a thing outside of a petty insult until I was in my early teens, whereas being gay was more mainstream.
For context, the main reason I continue to write gay fanfiction is because I consume a lot of media that have predominantly male characters, and therefore predominantly male relationships. For example my main fandom is JJBA, and although I headcanon most of the female characters as WLW in some way (eg. Lisa Lisa) there's not really any other present female protagonists to 'ship' them with. Media is still very male-dominated, and I think that's a big reason why MLM is overrepresented to the point of fetishism. It's more of a systemic issue rather than a problem specifically with writers and consumers, but I would urge cis straight women to pick apart how they're writing their gay relationships because, in my experience, those people are the ones with the most egregious examples of fetishism (like the majority of the Larry Stylinson or Phan fandoms lol, but shipping real people is another issue entirely).
There was a big discussion in Eve's thread before she came out as gay accusing her of queerbaiting, which was incredibly frustrating. I think there's an issue of assuming that traditionally good-looking, effeminate women or female-presenting people are straight because that's the way the male gaze is coded. I don't think it does any good to say that Ruby is or is not LGBTQ+, unless she comes out specifically saying she is one way or the other. It's an incredibly personal issue and I wouldn't want to be the contributing factor to forcing someone to come out just so they don't come across as queerbaiting or pretending to be gay when they're not. I do agree that Ruby never before expressing interest in the LGBTQ+ community in any way is telling, though. Also annoying because I would have loved to be at the Heartstopper premiere

OCD-like symptoms can be varied depending on who it is, she might have symptoms you'd expect (eg. hand-washing) but not fulfil the stereotype you're thinking of. It's got far more to it than just being clean, and you could very easily need to compulsively hand-wash but not worry about mess around you. She's got other symptoms that possibly suggest OCD or a similar anxiety disorder, such as her need to plan her essays five million times before actually writing, which could imply that she does compulsively hand wash. I understand why you wouldn't understand it, but mental illness is incredibly personal and differs from person to person, and OCD in particularly is very misrepresented in media.

But then again, she did have difficulty even picking a topic, this time last year she was dead set on Victorian girlhood before switching to... Victorian Christmas? And then Emily Dickinson? There is a story with Ruby drinking/chewing more gifted tea and I've had a realisation about her 'chewing.' In wine tasting when they try a wine they 'chew' it and swirl it around the mouth to get more flavour supposedly, I don't know if she is trying to do that when she drinks or it is a weird Ruby-ism.
I also wouldn't be surprised if it was her first time watching a full movie that wasn't Harry Potter or Matilda.On a separate note, I went to Exeter and I was in first year when Roobee was in first year studying philosophy. I never actually spoke to her but I knew someone who was an acquaintance of hers. They told me that they went to a premiere showing of some movie (can't remember what) which was showing at midnight and Rubiks Cube confessed that it was her first time staying up that late, ever.

One thing which has been on my mind a lot is how angry it makes me that Ruby refuses to grow up. I have disabilities and I would love to be able to do all the things she has money and capabilities for! The fact that she doesn't use her money to try anything new when some of us would adore to do that, just makes me so mad.
I'm surprised Ruby doesn't talk about Miss Peregrine's home for peculiar children more, because that's exactly what she's doing. She's pretending to live in the past era as a special child forever under her guardian's protection in a sheltered place. Exactly how the peculiars lived many years.

Totally agree! That advisor who told her she should write about Carroll's letters instead of Dickinson's really did her a disservice there, imho. Then again maybe Ruby just did a bad job of pitching her proposed Dickinson project and that's why they tried to redirect her to sth else, who knows.I actually did find that passage relatively okay but idk if it's just me but I wish she would have chosen another topic, anything but Lewis Carroll. This whole child muse thing given the history of Carrol is making me a lil uncomfortableBefore she started to work on her diss she shared some of alternative topics and idk I just think she could have done a way better job with Emily Dickinson.

The overarching topic is supposed to be Lewis Carroll's letters, but she's thrown so much unrelated shit under that umbrella it's pretty much meaningless now.
Pretty sure when she proposed this topic, her supervisor or whatever thought the dissertation would examine how his letters relate to his works, considering this is a Literature degree. But it seems she went for a more anthropological/sociological type of examination? Like I don't really understand how any of this relates to Lewis Carroll or his works in particular. From what we've seen so far it could be about anyone's letters really, she's just looking at letter writing in general.
