Sorry for the really bad highlighting skills but does Ruby not even consider that maybe not everyone has good memories of Christmas? I’m very fortunate to have been surrounded by love at Christmas but unfortunately my grandad died on Christmas Eve when I was a child and since then it’s not been as magical. I realise that’s a very small thing in comparison to others, I don’t think she realises that many people aren’t as fortunate to have grown up with ‘Christmas magic’.
I'm so sorry to hear that, my grandad was diagnosed with cancer last Christmas Eve and sadly passed away this March. I think Ruby is very lucky to (seemingly) have a small but close family unit that can have these magical Christmas's, which is fine, but she needs to stop pretending that's the universal experience for all of us. :'/

I desperately want to leave a comment saying I know she means well but that this just feels a little tone deaf right now, but I just know her 12 year old fans who can't see the problems with her content will just pillory me...

I don't know, but impressively she's actually made it
This is tone deaf and shows privilege. Some people will have spent Christmas in hospital, going hungry, had no presents. I spent it being abused, so no Ruby, Christmas eve wasn't magic. It was about hiding and trying to not make any noise

Sending you warm wishes today ❤ I agree it shows she has no insight into the fact that Christmas isn't automatically lovely for everyone. For a season that is supposed to be about giving, I find watching her bask in her fairyland existence without any real sense of how lucky she has been frustrating. I hope you have a safe and peaceful day this year Xxx

You guys were talking about Ruby's friend Ruby and how they aren't close friends anymore and suddenly I remembered Isabella Athena, which is such a carbon copy of Ruby!

They are friends, even though Isabella lives in The US, as I remember them streaming together a live on instagram a while ago. So apparently Ruby is always gonna find newer friends that look and behave exactly like her (and, as the years go by, they're always gonna be younger than her, apparently)
I find it odd how all the smaller channels she features seem to be of girls younger than her (some look as young as 14 or 15) that have very similar interests and seem to be copying her with the study-with-me, letter writing, cosy day in the life, etc.

I have exactly zero interest in learning what she got for Christmas this year and how grateful she is for it.

Isabella is in her freshman year of college studying political science so Ruby and her are a little closer in age than 14 lol.

I actually really Isabella! She’s really vocal on a lot of issues like BLM and other things going on in the world. She’s also very aware of money and people who may not be as fortunate especially in the current world setting. She’s very sweet too and will always comment back if I’ve DMed her. I may be biased, but she is definitely the more “woke” and more “aware” version of Ruby lol

I think the problem w Ruby’s perspective on Christmas is encapsulated by her Goodreads review of A Christmas Carol. She mentions the spirit of Christmas, kindness, and mindfulness as the main themes those are takeaways I would expect from a far younger reader (they were for me as a child). I know the book is not really that deep and but an adult student of English literature should also recognize what it says about how complicit wealthy people are in institutions that perpetuate cycles of poverty (are there no prisons? are there no workhouses?) and how the charity of individual people really only goes so far...maybe I’m just cynical

no you’re right. For an English lit student, her insight is incredibly simplistic and immature

nah you're totally right. Particularly considering that a lot (most) of Dicken's work deals with issues of wealth and poverty in various manners, and so even though A Christmas Carol clearly stands out to Ruby for its seasonal setting, it's really a very classically Dickensian book. Obvs you can enjoy a book without constantly reading it as a lit student, but it feels like she really isn't engaged in an adult way with what she reads

I can't be the only person who has always found A Christmas Carol truly harrowing 😂 The only time it feels warm and festive is only at the very end, the rest is terrifying when you're a child and sobering as an adult. Reading it for the first time was an experience alright. To each their own but it makes me feel as festive as an afternoon tea with Miss Havisham.

I looked at her channel and she seems a little too preachy for me, but she does seem more aware of privilege than Ruby. Ruby is very oblivious about these types of things.

I think her focus on anti-bullying links to this well. There's no real, uncomfortable complexity to the issue and thus it is easy for her to preach and campaign about.

I hope she uploads a 'what I got for Christmas' video this year as well, it's a bit of a guilty pleasure for me. She has a such charmed life and I enjoy the gifts she receives from her family haha. I'm not much of a fashion/makeup enthusiast so most of these type of videos don't appeal to me but I like seeing her presents.

I agree, Ruby defo likes to play it safe when it comes to her public opinions ... "bullying is wrong" "treat people with kindness". There's no nuance to her arguments! She has the privilege, time and resources to delve deeper into other issues and form a real opinion on them, but she chooses not to out of fear that she'll be challenged or called out. So she sticks to preaching basic messages that won't be controversial. Maybe I'm being harsh, but with her platform I think it's unacceptable that she isn't speaking out about more serious world issues, especially as she wants to present herself as someone well-researched and intelligent. It just reeks of privilege - some people don't have the option to not face these issues, because they are directly impacted by them.

Re. A Christmas Carol - I do find it really odd that she treats the book as if it's some quintesentially wholesome festive text. It's like she's read the ending but completely missed the point of the rest of the novel which I find odd for an English Literature student. There was a really well done adaptation of it on the BBC last Christmas (still on iPlayer if you didn't catch it the first time round!) that really drew out the social criticism basis of the text, and Ruby just doesn't acknowledge this at all. She treats it the same way she treats A Little Princess.

The short films she's done on it are definitely overly simplistic and bland, like the storybook stereotype of school bully. She mentions having been bullied so she could touch on her own experience and I think it would feel more real and honest. I know she might not feel that comfortable doing so (or maybe she feels it was not significant or happened frequent enough) but the reminders to "be kind" and do nice things for others just feel awfully hollow, sorry but who really needs to be told to be kind? There are also more important things to just being kind. There are so many complex issues people are having to deal with, I think she takes the easiest and most obvious path.

I've only just started watching, but her little disclaimer at the beginning didn't really line up with the videos of her decorating the tree in her massive family home that she inserted, and the thumbnail of her with all of her expensive presents? I do wonder if that was in response to the comments a couple of people rightly left on her last video.

So she spends five minutes justifying the video then a solid 15 MINUTES showing all the presents she got?!

I know every family is different and maybe we’re just not big on presents but I cannot imagine being given SO MANY! Especially aged TWENTY. I wonder how she would’ve reacted if she just got some money in a card lol.

I’m not defending her by any means, and we are here to snark, but I’m wondering what kind of a disclaimer would be sufficient? I honestly don’t think there’s anything she could say that could entirely undo her privilege, but what grade do we give her for effort? Asking for myself, too, because I feel like I’m a bit BEC about her these days, and that’s not necessarily a way I want to be.

Honestly if your video needs a large disclaimer and still feels tacky, maybe just don't post it. Especially as an adult.

It's so wild to me that she gets so much at her age. My parents and family used to buy me that amount of stuff at age 7. She's very lucky her family can afford to do so much gift-giving (lord knows mine can't), but it also feels like people just kind of grow out of expecting huge Christmas "hauls" as they age? Maybe that's just me. I honestly can't think of any other twenty-somethings I know who still get such an insane amount of presents.
