I’ve put it in a spoiler just in case🧡

It’s different for everyone, but for most ‘normal’ people, you’d maybe glance in the mirror and double check your outfit, but body checking is extreme. I could spend literally hours looking at my body from different angles, maybe focusing in on one area. It’s usually positioning your body in different positions to double check how ‘large’ you look from a certain angle
This sort of thing
Theres a lot of things, but off the top of my head a big thing is checking measurements of your body eg waist, wrists, legs or other specific areas with your hands / with a measuring tape, but also comparing your body to how it was in the past from videos or photos, wearing old clothes from your childhood when you were a lot younger and smaller etc
Those are just a few I can think of but theres a lot more, depends on the person
Thanks both - puts into context what Ruby seems to be doing e.g. with your old school jumper.

On the subject of Christmas, I find it rather insufferable that someone as old as her (or anyone over the age of, say, 10) still makes videos listing all the things they've been gifted for the holidays or their birthday. Putting a disclaimer saying that she's not trying to show off, and that she's just grateful for all the things she has received is extremely tone deaf. It's still showing off, it's still promoting hyper-consumerism, and even though I come from a relatively privileged background for my country, my parents would have been mortified if I published something like that on the internet.

SAAAME! But she’s always like, it’s a ‘highly requested video’. When I first discovered her and saw some of her Christmas gift videos, I was in shock. The amount of money from one of her stockings is pretty much the budget for my Christmas gifts. Don’t get me wrong, I love every single one of my gifts, but that amount is just... unreal. Like, I don’t even think that you could be grateful for every single item when you have a constant stream. Honestly, the more I watch her, the more condescending, privileged and upper class she seems to get (even if she doesn’t seem to realise it).

I think she means well but she truly doesn't understand how privileged and lucky she is, despite trying to be aware of it. I can see that Christmas video cheering up a select few but for the majority of the drained, let down, upset people, it will come off as sincere as any other Christmas advert. I personally don't doubt that she feels this way about this time of the year but I also think it's the time to be a bit more mindful about what these pblic figures put online and how they express themselves, especially in a period where so many people have had to deal with loss of loved ones, income or simply the support of their social circle. If she had put a simple Christmas message saying she wished everyone a happy holiday season and hoped everyone was safe, it could have gone down better than a soliloquy about the Christmas spirit.

If I'm being completely honest, I really enjoy watching her 'What I got for Christmas' videos as she gets a ridiculous amount of gifts and nothing like I ever received at Christmas. It's crazy to me that she gets more than one gift per person, in my house it was always one (maybe 2 from my parents) which I was still very fortunate to receive. I guess it's just still exciting to see so many gifts. A guilty pleasure if you will.

I can completely understand how it wouldn't be received well by a large section of her audience, and I really can't see how she could truly appreciate every gift with that much, I'd forget about so much stuff if I got that much every year!

I was surprised by that too. I didn't always celebrate Christmas growing up, and even if we received gifts, it was usually one item from my parents and maybe a walk around the neighborhood to look at some lights. So hers does seem a bit extra. I grew up in a culture where it was rude to talk about your gifts or ask others what they got, so I was quite surprised the first time I watched one of those videos. Maybe that's just me though lol.

I’ll admit I’m kind of hoping she will do a gift haul (not that she would ever call it that! It’ll be titled something like ”What I was fortunate enough to be gifted for Christmas #grateful #wholesome”). It’s been a few years since I’ve given or received any presents, and she gets the kind of stuff I would like. (I make up for my situation by getting myself plenty of presents, though. Just the other day, 19 books arrived in the mail 😬)

plus, you know, more to snark about!

With her gift videos, I'm always torn between enjoyment (I would also like this many gifts) and thinking about just how privileged she grew up that her christmas presents are definitely more than I would get in a year (as someone who grew up in a fairly middle class household).

(Also totally agree with buying yourself many books.)

What I don't understand is where she stores all these gifts. She says she's grateful for all of them, and loved them all equally, but she only has a finite amount of space in her room for all these things and we hardly ever see these gifts again in later videos. Like what happened to that typewriter she got for her birthday a while back? Has it just been shoved in a closet somewhere? Does she re-gift things or give them to charity?

You guys were talking about Ruby's friend Ruby and how they aren't close friends anymore and suddenly I remembered Isabella Athena, which is such a carbon copy of Ruby!

They are friends, even though Isabella lives in The US, as I remember them streaming together a live on instagram a while ago. So apparently Ruby is always gonna find newer friends that look and behave exactly like her (and, as the years go by, they're always gonna be younger than her, apparently)

Sorry for the really bad highlighting skills but does Ruby not even consider that maybe not everyone has good memories of Christmas? I’m very fortunate to have been surrounded by love at Christmas but unfortunately my grandad died on Christmas Eve when I was a child and since then it’s not been as magical. I realise that’s a very small thing in comparison to others, I don’t think she realises that many people aren’t as fortunate to have grown up with ‘Christmas magic’.

This is tone deaf and shows privilege. Some people will have spent Christmas in hospital, going hungry, had no presents. I spent it being abused, so no Ruby, Christmas eve wasn't magic. It was about hiding and trying to not make any noise

i cant even find excuses for her.
there shouldn't be any i believe, she's a grown woman, who's in uni, who claims to be 'smart', who claims she researches into all these things and spreads anti-bullying and kindness. but she can't even acknowledge her own privilege, i personally think she is just ignorant. there is no way, at her age, and with her social status and how she's in the online world that she cannot understand how tone deaf she sounds.

Arrogant and short sighted, there is no excusing it at her age. Had to giggle at her reading her old Christmas books - Country Living magazine???

I’m salty about her getting the dogs dressed up as reindeer. My mom and I spent some time trying to get her cat to wear tiny antlers for one single photo, but he was having none of it AND he emptied his anal glands in the process. Oh, the magical smells of Christmas ✨🌟
