Linking back to my previous post about her knowing exactly what she’s doing.

She’s done a lot of research into anorexia and will know the symptoms very well. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that she posts things that could be seen as symptoms of having food issues...

And maybe RS/Theology didn’t fit her “aesthetic” seeing as a lot of people probably don’t consider it a “serious” subject. This is not my opinion on RS/Theology by the way and perhaps I’m being cynical but I don’t know, maybe it didn’t have the right “academic” appeal for what Ruby wants to project to her followers?
I really think ruby enjoyed theology but she changed to English to have another year at uni and because she has romanticised reading and books. But I would say that unless she’s going to do a masters, it may be harder to get a job with English than from theology

Oh, definitely. I saw that and it was the first thing that came to mind.
Which also makes me think she might be forcing it? The last thing you want when you have an eating disorder is someone noticing and calling you out on it.
It reminds me of a child waving their arms and going "Look at me! Look!".

Who is the girl on the far left? She used to hang out with her a lot and then I feel like Blakeney took centre stage? Hmm
sachapavoux on insta, I feel she’s a more refined version of marfa haha

I think she was the first person Ruby sat next to when she started English. To be fair though, you don’t always stay friends with the first person you meet on your course at uni - my friendship group changed from 1st to 3rd year. Maybe they’ve grown apart, they’re definitely an unlikely friendship imo

That's exactly the thing - English is a way more mainstream field. Many actors, writers etc. have taken English at those large universities, and she's an "academic bookworm". At least to me, theology seems like a much more academically taxing field with lots of obscure subjects and actual philosophy involved. Literature is, in many ways, much easier than theology would be. (But of course, it is also not "I read novels all day long, look at me" that many and perhaps even Ruby believe it to be)

I think she wants to go into acting and play period drama’s which is why she does so many of those spoken monologues. It would also suit why she is obsessed with “olden times”

She could go into acting in reenactments or for museums and projects, I think she would enjoy that. I don't know if it can be an income on its own but it sounds like the kind of think she would jump at.

She's really not good at it though. From what we've seen in her cringy monologues.

I can definitely see her doing that. No way she could cope with professional acting (either stage or screen). It's a really brutal industry, I think it would destroy her. Nobody would care about her degree, which I imagine would upset her, and you have to be able to cope with pretty much constant criticism, plus if she does have any form of body dysmorphia, I can't see acting as a profession improving that. She's never done any actual acting has she? Beyond monologues on insta that is? Exeter must have an active theatre soc and film soc (well maybe not so much right now obvs), whenever she posts those videos saying how much she likes drama I'm always surprised she hasn't tried them out. Then again, I suspect based on being heavily in my uni's theatre scene, that she'd probably look down on the sorts of people who do student theatre!

I actually thought studying theology suited her whole ‘dark academia’ thing a lot better. It’s one of those degrees where it’s quite niche, so the people who choose to study it can be a bit eccentric. Not all, of course, but more so than English I would say. English is much more versatile and people hiring will actually know what it is, not so for theology. So I would say theology is something people are more likely to study just for the love of studying, and those are the same people who will like this whole ‘academic aesthetic’ thing.

She did those lambda theatre qualifications things or whatever they're called.

This maybe? https://www.lamda.ac.uk/lamda-exams/our-exams/performance/acting
lol 100% not the same as actually being involved in theatre productions - I did all mine in school, (though never act at uni haha). I'd guess she probably wouldn't like being told what to do by a director, especially if she disagreed with their interpretation of a text. Putting on plays for performance is very different to studying them, it requires lots of teamwork that I think she'd struggle with, or end up pissing off everyone working on the show. With lamda you can basically do your own thing - even if your school has a teacher for it, you still have the freedom to do what you want with the performance. If she worked on her interpersonal skills a bit maybe she'd like directing? Though it seems to be the acting she really likes. It still strikes me as odd she's never mentioned trying theatre/film at Exeter tho.

I completely agree! Other than being a bookworm, she really doesn't come across as the typical English student. Of course there's nothing wrong with that, there ought to be lots of diversity in types of people taking subjects, but at least at my uni I don't think she'd really fit in with people who take English. I can defo see Theology suiting her much better.

I almost majored in English at university before I realized that just loving to read doesn't necessarily mean you'll enjoy an English degree. Ruby also seems to read and study a very narrow section of books, mostly middle grade and classics written by primarily white authors. I wonder how often she reads books by those outside Europe/North America. She also doesn't seem to be able to give very in depth reviews. I think it would be interesting to see her move towards more Booktube style videos and if she can really give more critical reviews beyond "I thought it was lovely"

I would love to see her diversify her choice of authors. It could even be ideal YouTube content if she wanted it to be.

I can't imagine Ruby having much of an acting range - middle class/upper class white English woman... and that's pretty much it.

This!
It would be easy content for her if she loves reading as much as she says she does. I love watching booktubers (my fave is Noelle Gallagher) and it's kinda hilarious to go from someone who will review a book in depth and actually make you want to read it, to Ruby who's reviews rarely go past 'It was good' or 'I really liked it'.
But...who would be interested in watching her talk about middle grade kids books 😬 . I always stare at the Stephen King book on her bookcase in the background of most of her vlogs and am amazed she's read it tbh

I think many actors have to have a broad experience in many areas of life, and a good understanding of people and what people want. Ruby is completely sheltered, her only worldy experience is going to university where she's lived in fairly luxury accomodation (compared to grotty student flats many live in), she lives a very privileged life with a good income and Mummy and Daddy as a back up and has access to a healthy diet and lifestyle. She often romanticises poverty and and living in poor accomodation and her idea of discrimination is the bullying she faced in primary school for being an annoying know-it-all. She'd have no idea how to be a successful actor work-wise, let alone acting itself. She is completely wooden in these weird monologues and moments of her staged existence. Whatever she's considering as a career- if it's writing or acting, she won't be as successful as she probably thinks, and will HATE not being the best.

Yes! Noelle, bookslikewhoa and Books and Things (excellent Victorian content!) have spoiled Ruby’s feeble attempts at talking about books for me. I feel like she’s so focused on quantity over quality that she has no interest in developing her taste and reverts back to middle-grade books whenever she has a chance, rather than actually challenging herself.

(...and now I’m imagining an ”I read A Little Life and cried for 24 hours” vlog from her 😂)

I read A Little Life after watching Noelle's vlog on it! Couldn't imagine Ruby picking it up ahha
I'd love to see Ruby diversify her reading a little more though, she should challenge herself to read only adult books for a month or something
