She showed herself reading it but as far as I can recall, she never said a thing about not liking it or not understanding the hype, maybe you’re thinking of someone else? (Or my brain is shot, which may also be the case.)
I remember her saying something like this. She said she was struggling to get into it or something? I can't remember exactly but there was defo an insta story where she said she wasn't liking it.
I'm sure there are also dozens of Ted Talks/Ted videos, podcasts etc that deal with Greek mythology. It would really benefit her to at least learn the basics.
Maybe my perspective is biased because in my country Greek and Roman mythology, art and literature is a huge part of our education and anyone graduating high school would be expected to be familiar with it, at the very least. Especially if you're going to pursue a degree in the humanities afterwards.
In the UK it isn't a standard aspect of education, but for sure as a second year lit student I would expect her to know the very basics. Especially given she studied the Odyssey in translation at some point; Achilles does appear in the Odyssey (albeit very briefly, and dead 😂), and I'd have thought given the events of the Odyssey take place after the events of the Iliad she'd probably have done some kind of background research.

It's so obviously a lazy excuse for the fact that she just doesn't like the book but doesn't want to admit it. It was a massive giveaway that she was talking about it at the same time as The Secret History - apparently one of the best books she'd ever read, but it just 'wasn't the right time' to read it, and she hasn't picked it up since. It's not a great sign for her future academic studies if she's scared to disagree with popular opinion.

Sorry to be a bit off topic again, but I've been reading through all the threads and found this video as people were talking about a puppy called Lola, and I just want to say...wtf is this breathing in the audio? I actually had to pause the video and rewind it to make sure it was from this video. Edit- and yes this video is old from 2018 but it's just really strange to me.

She definitely looked like she was having an argument with her dad just before 4 minutes, and then afterwards he seems to leave the room and her mum try to calm her down… I could just be reading way too much into this! But it could confirm what I’ve thought for a while, which is that “Mother Granger” somewhat enables Ruby’s behaviour - same with Marfa. In which case, she perhaps is in denial how much Ruby has slipped in the past year, or feels that “mothering” her will make her magically better.

From experience, I can say that my mum tried to do this for me and it’s only through a lot of time and therapy that I was able to say to her “please call me out!” Key to this was to ask her to stop buying all my “safe foods” and help me challenge the ED more, also to keep encouraging me to go out, “renter the world” so to speak and feel the fear.

“a comfort zone is a beautiful place, but nothing grows there.”

Imagine giving famous 5 a two stars but call me by your name a 5. I get literature is subjective and Enid Blyton is very outdated and honestly not a good person but call me by your name is essentially a romanticised story about grooming (sorry if you like it lol). I've not read famous five since I was in primary school though and it was written for kids it's hardly going to be the odyssey so I'm curious to see why she gave it a two.
Side note did anybody read those rainbow fairy books, Ruby the red fairy etc because I used to love them and I'm only mildly annoyed there wasn't any with my name, I'm shocked Ruby hasn't read those recently though she loves a children's book

I'm a few seconds in to the most recent video and for some reason the fact that the New Yorker she has lying open is from 2018 made me laugh. I keep back issues of my favourite magazines/journals too. But in Ruby's case its just so very much just about the aesthetic, you know? So any ol' issue of the New Yorker will do.

Is it useful to write out your whole speech word for word like that? I've done a lot of oral exams/presentations over the years because our education system is pretty much based on oral exams and never once have I written a whole script for myself like that. Did she memorize it or did she look at her notes every two seconds?
Last time I did sth like that was primary tbh and it was because I had no experience in public speaking and was stressed. Now I would only do a summary of points / subtopics I want to make sure I won't forget to mention in a particular order but not a word by word speech. Gives you an idea how bad she is at that. And that's okay if you struggle with public speaking but I surely would not show that on my yt channel 🤦‍♀️

Wow what fresh studytuber hell is this on my tiktok fyp today?
A 9am-9pm study with me session during summer? Pure Ruby vibes 😭😭
So many comments are calling her out like ‘IT’S SUMMER WHAT ARE YOU DOING, GO TO THE BEACH!!!!’

"Oposiciones", as this girl says, are like public exams for Spain's administration. It's totally normal for someone who is pursuing these exams to expend 10-12 hours/day studying. So in this case I would say it's not "Ruby vibes" related haha

Tbf, I'm not sure where you got the "hour" from on the timetable. I found the part of the video you meant and I could write that in 2-3 minutes, and it would help me personally. If I don't plan a work day it is easy for me to spend way too long on one task, and just giving a quick estimation of how long each task should take will make me hurry up if I realise it is taking too long.
It's great that to-do lists help you - they help me too, and I'm sure a lot of other people on the thread can agree! But Ruby isn't just any random person just trying to get by. She has an audience of multiple hundred thousand - an impressionable audience at that! - some of her videos have millions of views, and that means a degree of responsibility. She's constantly sending out the message that all of this constant, neverending busywork is necessary to succeed at school or university, and giving herself so much extra pointless work to do, then telling everyone else to do the same. Just look at her '35 things to do before school starts' video as an example. She's actively making money from being seen as an authority figure teaching people how to study and be successful, but then she's also wasting so much time and coming out with half-assed, blindingly inefficient work. The to-do lists are part of the much wider problem of her content in general, even if they're an effective organisational strategy in isolation.

I find it very hard to believe she eats protein bars and even harder to believe she’s tried enough to announce the gifted one she’s received is ‘the best ever’.

Has she no shame or guilt accepting just about anything offered to her? She’s a glut.
"Trust me on this one," said the compulsive liar with a proven history of being completely untrustworthy.

No as in a Wednesday afternoon, private schools have a high percentage of pupils off at competitive fixtures, if you don’t do that, you have to do something else. So by chances she must have previously played an instrument etc, this even happens at 6th form too
Would the acting class she took have fit in this time slot? Whatever it was she did, she‘s not pursuing it now. It just strikes me as very strange that she never talks about any hobbies. It’s all studying and compulsive exercise, she doesn’t seem to be doing anything that she wants to get better at or that has a function apart from making her feel productive or burning calories.

The let has been agreed but if you search Rightmove for 1 bed cottage in Little Missenden and include let agreed properties you should be able to find it for now :sneaky:
Thank you! Here is the link: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/111319004#/?channel=RES_LET

It's very pretty but ridiculously expensive. The kitchen is tiny and there isn't even an entrance hall. No furniture and a tiny courtyard garden. And it seems very expensive for the area. Compare to this: https://www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/111163034#/?channel=RES_LET

Idk if it's just me, but she also always adds notes to her books and textbooks in pen, and highlights the hell out of them and watching this makes me so angry
She is also extremely messy, for someone who is supposedly so into lists and notes, stationary and revision. Her messy handwriting, her horrible underlining, her haphazard tabs. What a mess she makes. During all these years, in all her free time of finding ways to fill her hours up, why didn't she learn to be neater, write more clearly, underline straight or use an index card or ruler to keep it nicer, colour-code tabbing like you see in so many YouTube videos. No wonder she has to study so much to make any sense out of her sloppy notes.

Ruby doesn't even make her videos for anybody except herself, in my opinion. All she does is more and more of the same exact videos saying 'you need to do lists, it's good to have a walk, here's all my stationary I showed you 10 times before!'.
For crying out loud, in her new video, I can't believe she even had to say 'it's important to do things OTHER THAN ACADEMICS'... EVERY single time it just feels like her ideal audience is....well, herself. She is probably one of the only people who sits at home doing nothing but studying, yoga and walks - this is presuming she isn't putting on a persona.
100%, she doesn't really address her audience unless she's selling something right? Sometimes I do wonder is she intentionally making the same video over and over again (not in the sense that she's reusing footage, but in terms of the actual video topics) or does she genuinely think that she's coming up with new ideas, does Ruby ever even mention upcoming videos, videos that have been suggested or anything like that? I know not every youtuber takes that approach but I just found it a little odd. (Maybe she does mention this stuff and I just don't realize it..)

Just to throw out a different opinion, I'm an English student about to start on my PhD, and I used folders/my pencil case literally every day during my MLitt. I would store and organise my handwritten notes from seminars etc in folders/files, organised by module and week and put any relevant research/secondary reading in with the notes from that week's seminar.

I know lots of people do their notes digitally etc but I just can't take stuff in unless I'm actually writing it out by hand.
That’s totally fair, I think that one of the most important things to highlight if you’re giving study advice is: find out what works for you. If you learn best through physical notes that’s great, if you’re better off with digital that’s great too. But Ruby seems to think that you have to use EVERY method to do well, hence having notes on notion, kindle, in physical books, notebooks, planners etc. Maybe she should say “if you like online notes, x is good, alternatively y is great for people who prefer paper” rather than encouraging her followers to buy the entire stock of a stationery store, as well as apps and tech (spending double the amount of money and time necessary)

OK I have actually found the house online based on the clip of her standing in the kitchen in this video 😂 Obviously won't post a link or the address, but it's pretty easy to find if you Google "1 bedroom cottage Buckinghamshire", scroll down to about the 6th website on the results page (has an icon kind of like a red circle), it's currently advertised to rent for £1600 per month. You can easily identify the kitchen in the pictures 🙊 (delete if not appropriate)
That place is in the middle of nowhere ... I can't see Ruby living there without a license and a car. (I live in the middle of nowhere too and I love my car!!)

One of the other things which Ruby does that irritate me a lot is how she brews her tea, she is a self-proclaimed tea lover, studies CEREMONIES of how to prepare it, yet she is always seen brewing tea with boiling water, and just pouring it in the kettle and letting the loose leaf tea sit in there?? That's not how you are supposed to do it Roobee you are just drinking bitter water girl
And when she uses tea bags, she just leaves the bag in the mug for what seems like several months.

I can't see her living there after uni. Living in the middle of nowhere, with no driving licence and she doesn't like being alone there? Not to mention presumably she will have/want to find a job of some kind (unless she plans to rehash YT content forever) so a town or city would be better (regardless of what she might think now). Nah, to me it looks like it's purely a financial decision so that later on she can cash out. It's probably on AirBnB or something and she took the video down so you can't identify it.
I can see her trying to do a PHD after her MA, to try and prolong the studying (Aka school) experience as long as possible. So the cottage will likely be derelict this by then! Does she ever talk about maintaining it? Or leasing it out for that matter?

Given that we have a housing crisis in this country and she claims to be left-leaning, if the cottage is just say their empty it will be up there with #ProductiveSlowLiving as one of her other biggest hypocrisies.

I just realised what this reminds me of!!!

Wait, no, sorry, a decent version of Little Women isn't her favourite... (as someone who apparently loves the Victorian era so how does she not have issues with the multitude of what's wrong in the '19 adaption? Oh wait, I forgot, no depth. I'm with you hahah)

Better!

Re Lady Chatterley - I wonder what she actually thinks of it? Has she actually managed to get through it all without flushing and clutching her pearls? Or was it too much like the Song of Achilles in the sensuality department? (as people have mentioned, not having a Greek Mythology phase doesn't seem to have stopped her from talking about The Odyssey. It's not like SoA is set in the same timeline or anything....oh wait....) I doubt she'd be interested in reading the book Penguin put out of the court case on Lady Chatterley ('The Trial of Lady Chatterley', for those interested) then...
