It depends on how regularly she saw him too, but I'd say she should have been more vigilant anyway knowing they had no prior experience before Preston moving in. Did she not notice Preston flinch or begin to lose his smile when JV was with him?
My mum would have been asking where any bruise came from on my kids, an arm in a cast and she'd have been questioning me like a police officer. Having 6 children herself I'd have expected her to be more on the ball.
I know that she wasn’t approved to have Preston in her care/overnight at first, because it was mentioned somewhere they were glad she was now approved coz they wanted a night out 🙄

Both of them are done for - absolutely finished.
Defence speeches tomorrow and possibly the start of the Judges summing up which could take a while as so many charges - then over to the jury. I’m guessing by Thursday the jury will be out on this if it all starts on time.
I hope they are excused from jury service ever again after what they will have seen and heard.

JV’s mum had said “it wouldn’t have happened if he was with me“ at the hospital, they hadn’t been arrested yet, she’d only been fed the “accidental drowning in the bath” lie at that point.

I am surprised that Preston was left with grandparents so early on in his bonding with his adoptive ‘dads’. Social services used to say to have minimal household visitors for the first few months and no over night stays away from home ideally for the first year while baby settles in. Of course I am just going by my own experience and this was a decade ago but still. You’d think they would want to soak up every moment with him and not palm him onto relatives as well.
They do seem to have gone through the adoption process fairly quickly and when they were in a relatively new relationship themselves. Anything less than 5 years I would say is pretty new in the grand scheme of having kids etc.

Weird thing to say out loud in the moment, no? When surely you’d be absolutely devastated for your own son and wouldn’t want to make his pain and suffering any worse by placing blame. Put her comment alongside the fact she wouldn’t let him near the body… I don’t know 🙈 It just sounds to me like she was caught accidentally thinking out loud because she knew.

I think she may well have spent the previous weeks and months telling him to do better, not be rough, pay more attention etc and she lost her tit because he’d been so stupid as to leave him in a bath and now he was dead.
That was before she knew it was a lie and he’d grape him to death.

Given how hysterical he acted at the hospital and how righteous during the questioning video released I would have loved to see their facial expressions during the closing speech today

Another part of the pod which was interesting was the cross - exam of Sandra the foster mum, who came back to court to refute the claim byJV that Preston needed to go about with no nappy for “free Willy time”.

JV’s KC absolutely gave her hell accusing her of panicking about her own reputation as a foster carer. That she only came to court concerned about Oldham council hearing of her bad practices and bad advice, and she was now lying and backtracking to blame JV for her own failings.

Sandra massively held her own in the face of all this by the way.

Don't be surprised if the defence summing up is actually offensive because I saw shades of it towards Sandra. That’s the game, that’s what KC’s do.
There was nothing wrong with the advice to leave the nappy off. It's standard treatment for nappy rash. It's just those two perverts twisted the practice into something inappropriate. Calling it " free willy time" could be seen as inappropriate but by itself not concerning. I doubt Oldham council would care. I can see why Sandra wouldn't want to be misquoted in such a public trial though.

The point of the post was the KC was really going for her so don’t be surprised if summing up the defence is vile.

the “nappy off“ views were debated endlessly previously I absolutely didn’t want to start them up again

I hadn’t really thought about gay adoption/ surrogacy before this case, I’m not sure my views have changed necessarily but I found Ollie Locke thread and it’s now opened up a new topic for me to be engrossed in for a bit.
I agree with the previous person who’s suggested JV’s mum may have been thinking out loud at the hospital, and just really angry that he’d left Preston in the bath for whatever reason.

One of their mothers was/is a nurse, I'm sure I read it in either the MEN reporting towards the start of the trial, or the reporting from the first trial or in an article linked here. I am pretty sure it was JV's but can't be 100% certain.

I am wondering just how much will come out after the trial has finished. We all expected an avalanche after the Letby trials but it never came. It would be interesting to know what their ex partners had to say about each of them to the adoption social worker. Any partners that you have lived with or where children have been involved have to either be spoken to or some adoption LAs or agencies will send out a reference form with questions.

He worked in a secondary school. I’m amazed that the teenagers he worked with are not all over social media talking about him.

Those vile excuses for humans who murdered Sarah Sharif didn't get whole life orders despite causing 70 injuries and 25 broken bones over 2 years of neglect and torture. There was an appeal against the leniency of the sentence (father got 40 years) but it was rejected.
I know there was no sexual element but what they did to that beautiful girl was disgusting and horrific. I followed it on here and it will haunt me forever.
I’ve thought about poor Sara during this case too. There was definitely a sadist element there as well.

The stepmother got 33 years and the uncle 16 years for causing and allowing.
I think JV will get a similar sentence of 40 years and the evidence against JMF is more obvious than in Sara’s uncle case so it should be way more than 16 years.

Sara’s father has already had the tuna can lid treatment!

I would like to think that this has been reiterated time and time again, to not do that!
I don’t recall ever seeing teens speak out about other news/ cases though now you’ve said that. For example when teachers have been caught with pupils or something.

Someone here said local ex-pupils were posting saying ”always knew he was dodgy” but any troll could post that on socials.
I agree, they shouldn’t be posting anything, but let’s see after sentencing.

This is how I took it, the fact she hasn’t shown up to the trial suggests to me that she’s not someone who just thinks the sun shines out of her perfect kids. I assumed that she wanted to be a supportive mother and was helping her son while he adjusted to being a dad.

It’s fine if other people believe she should have spotted all the signs and reported him, but I think hindsight is 20/20.
He also seems like the vindictive type who would stop her seeing him out of spite.

Someone made a great point here a few days ago that JV was maybe trying to secure the anti depressants so he could drug Preston. I wonder if that's what the prosecution were getting at because he never told JMF he was depressed, that would be the first person you'd tell. He never told him because he wasn't depressed, it was to drug the child potentially

I think the depression/anti depressants is a whole area of spin. He did try to get them and probably to drug Preston. Otherwise, why didn’t he go the GP, it’s not difficult to get a script for yourself - new dad, baby up all night. Traceable to you though, isn’t it? If it came up on bloods.

JV is trying to say he wasn’t actually depressed, despite seeming to say he was. His KCis hinting that it was just a mixup and his sister was depressed. JMF’s KC is implying that JV mugh have been depressed but he didn’t tell JMF and hid it from him and if JMF had known he wouldn’t have leftJV alone all the time with Preston.

They're all trying to spin it their own way which is why it makes no sense.

I’m with you 100 percent. She has not been charged and there is nothing to suggest she was aware he was being abused.

I’ve attached a screenshot from the closing argument.

We are hearing a totality of evidence. There are photos of one of my siblings at that age and my mum said she looked like a battered baby (horrid term) as she always had bruises. We don’t know what JV has said to her.
