I have some sympathy for JV’s mother, I think she was worried but couldn’t have imagined the scale of abuse, I think she would have been getting increasingly concerned that he wasn’t just a bumbling fool but was resentful of Preston, unfortunately the moment she “knew” for sure was when he was dead.
I mean, who would suspect he was deliberately depriving a baby of oxygen and raping him for kicks?
i don’t! Before we even get to the internal damage, sexual abuse and oxygen deprivation, we have bruises, bite marks, an anal wound, very unhappy and unsettled baby who must have been in constant pain. Surely even holding him must have caused him noticeable discomfort….yet still she said nothing….

I thought these points were strong against JMF. (The site is working for me now)

She didn’t know all of that though, and the anal wound wasn’t visible externally, nor were some bruises, and the escalation in those final 4 days was very quick.

I bet the mum and sister who had twins that JV was “so good with” were sick when they found out. No wonder they weren’t giving evidence.

I‘ve no doubt she knew or she heavily suspected. It has also come across that she was very fond of Preston and he liked being with her. Why she didn’t intervene is absolutely beyond any rational thinking.
she was very fond of Preston and he liked being with her.

Of course he did. She was kind and gentle with him. He had no reason to fear women.

And she let him down. It breaks my heart.

I thought there was a prolapse? That would have been visible - or did that occur on the same day as Preston's death?

I don’t think for a minute JV’s mum thought he was capable of raping a baby, but same as with Letby’s mum, I just can’t believe they haven’t seen some sign of their character in them somewhere. A cruel streak, lack of empathy, indifference?
If they were truthful with themselves I bet they know somewhere deep down there was something off with them somewhat.

Yes.

The last lawyer the jury hear is the one offering ringing endorsements of what a good lad their client is and don't take any notice of the nasty prosecutor. It's considered fairer to the accused.
Makes sense in a way, but I was just thinking the jury have to spend the whole night with the prosecution’s words swirling around their heads and so nothing could undo what they’d heard!

Having never been in that situation, I can’t imagine what she’s going through, some kind of psychological shock? I don’t feel sorry for her if she knowingly didn’t say anything, but I do think she’s probably thought that JV would eventually do better and before she knew it, Preston’s been killed 😔. That’s what I hope anyway. Otherwise we have to assume she knew but did nothing?!

It depends on how regularly she saw him too, but I'd say she should have been more vigilant anyway knowing they had no prior experience before Preston moving in. Did she not notice Preston flinch or begin to lose his smile when JV was with him?
My mum would have been asking where any bruise came from on my kids, an arm in a cast and she'd have been questioning me like a police officer. Having 6 children herself I'd have expected her to be more on the ball.

Do you know if any of their family members have attended court. If the mothers aren’t attending are the fathers? In the case of JV if he has brothers are they there, have they listened to the disgusting things their brother has done? Same with fathers?
JV is a monster, and although I have said I don’t think he will get a whole life term he deserves it. And JMF enabled it all to happen. Jesus!

I don't think it's so clear cut as to blame JV's Mum. I imagine she heavily suspected they were incompetent but I can also imagine she was spun a web of lies too. For all we know JV could have told her that he was on seizure medication that made him bruise easily and affected his bum. I know I could tell my Mum that and she'd believe me even if she has concerns probably because she simply couldn't fathom I was doing anything sinister.

It doesn't necessarily work the way they'd like. There are two psychological phenomena - the primacy effect (where the first set of data you hear are the ones you remember most clearly) and the recency effect (where it is the last that you remember best). The bits in the middle are more likely to get lost.

Here we have a jury faced with the most hideous pictures to back up the spoken and written information - personally I think that would intrude into my mind every time the defending barristers opened their mouths. "X could have been an accident" (see mental picture - thinks: "Oh, no it couldn't"). I'm hoping that without intending to, the defence barristers actually only emphasise how unlikely these two are to be innocent.

I don’t believe she’s not said anything even just as a passing comment about bruising/ tiredness/ red bottom etc but I don’t believe JV would just not have a reason prepared that may seem quite plausible to an unsuspecting grandparent in the moment. She may have been getting there in terms of putting the pieces together with what she said in the hospital, but it was too late. I hope I’m right because like I said before, if not we have to assume she’s turned a blind eye to the most depraved actions.

The cases I followed, the judge does his summing up of evidence after prosecution and defence and that’s a lot more neutral (fact based). Although it can sound biased if the evidence is strong. I presume same will happen here. So defence is not likely the last thing the jury hear.

Yes that’s what I assumed it would be like for them. As in the Letby case, I’d like to know how many are parents or are women.

I suspect that JV has been a histrionic manipulative narc his entire life, and just bends people and reality around him, including his mother.

I’m assuming prosecution are referring to photos taken 4 days prior (of the abnormality of his bottom) and then there is the fact it was then seen in person by others (healthcare staff) the day he died. The abnormality must be prolapse or external tears, there would be no photos of internal abnormalities. There’s just absolutely no way she had that little boy and didn’t see it with her own eyes. She had him most of the day on the day that he was murdered - she would have changed his nappy and it’s also reported that she bathed him. If I saw anal injuries on any baby I would be horrified no matter whose baby it is.

At the very least she would’ve seen all the bruises - those span across the whole miserable 4 months 😣

I 💯 agree. She must have been in deep denial. She'll certainly be mentally running through the four months for the rest of her life.
