That's good to hear. Thank you!
Sorry, realised my comment could’ve been more helpful and I could’ve elaborated more.

I’ve heard some people say that NCT classes have a rep for being v pro breastfeeding and everything natural but our course instructor lady wasn’t like that at all. She covered all the pros and cons really well of the different methods and it didn’t really feel like there was an underlying agenda or anything, I came away feeling like I was armed with way more knowledge than I went in with (despite reading lots of pregnancy and baby books) and I learned so much - literally made pages of notes.

Is it only me that's genuinely shocked at how much NC classes cost? Or am I looking at the wrong thing?!

I was too! My friend did them and I had a look and near fell over, closed the Internet and didn't think about it again 😂

I haven’t done any classes. I did look in to them at the start but I’ve had so many issues it’s just not been a priority. I’ve ended up just watching loads of birth/breastfeeding coaches and midwives etc on tiktok and peoples real life experiences. It’s obviously the same as doing the courses but I feel like I’ve learnt loads and feel much more prepared than I did a few months ago.

My trust offered them for free, otherwise probably would’ve just stuck to Baby Academy webinars which have been incredibly helpful too to help consolidate my knowledge and anything extra I felt I didn’t know enough about!

I very naively thought they were free 😂 we have booked on to our local ones, to be honest part of it is to socialise with other parents to be as we don’t know many other parents/parents to be in our area at the moment. I’m still sickened that we’ve spent so much though!!

Those of you who booked private early gender reveal scans, how early did you book for? Would exactly 15 weeks be pushing my luck a little bit?

Thanks ladies! Just got a bit giddy and thought it'd be cute to be able to tell people the gender over Easter weekend, but the only appointment I could make is on Tuesday evening when I'll only be exactly 15 weeks. I'll be good and wait 😅 still want to book a private one but my partner thinks we should wait for the NHS 20 week scan. Booo.

The main benefit (for me and my husband) of doing NCT was meeting the other couples. We did a weekly course (over about 6 weeks) with 5 other couples, and I made good friends with two of them. During maternity leave we all hung over together every week and had a WhatsApp which was so helpful. The content we learned in the course was kind of secondary to the connection with other new parents.

Thank you for sharing this, this is what I’m hoping for! We chose a course that’s spread out over 6 weeks too so we regularly see the same people. Some of the courses near me were full on weekends but over after two days.

My clinic said 15w2d absolute earliest but I ended up being 17w as we waited for grandma to visit to she could come with us 🥰 (and I was slightly further on than we thought but that’s another story 🤣)

I couldn’t do the courses last time due to Covid and felt I really missed out as I’ve friends who still meet up with their group. That said, I’m not sure how much I’d be inclined to socialise with other new mums as it can feel a lot of comparison and pressure so I think it depends what kind of person you are.

The free online course the hospital provided was 50% super helpful and 50% terrible. The worst was loads of videos from New parents talking about their experiences and how they do things which, no disrespect, but they were new parents too so hardly the experts?! Didn’t find that helpful at all.

I’d take TikTok and IG that aren’t pure fact/education with a pinch of salt as I see a lot of terrible advice or ‘must haves’ that are just a flex. Some “how I got my 3 week old to sleep through” from FTMs who’re 2 months in type stuff and it’s like “luck Pal, pure luck, wait for regressions!”.
Particular caution to American videos that say don’t take this or that to hospital or these are your pain options, midwives take care of baby, you get to stay in this long etc as their system is totally different.

Make sure someone suggests the whatapp group at some point and if they don’t, suggest it yourself :) I think a lot of people do NCT for the friendships, and most people will be too shy to put it out there

My NCT WhatsApp group with the mums is still going strong almost 4 years later… despite ours being over zoom in lockdown. Tbh, I think the group kept us going when we physically couldn’t meet as much in person with families or friends or as a group (until we could!).

NCT groups were cancelled due to covid when I had my first. Our community midwife created a WhatsApp group for new mums who were due around the same time. Was utterly pointless for me as all the other mums were due two months before me and lived a good 45 minutes away so couldn't even make mum pals. We were told we weren't allowed to go to NCT classes for our second as they're oversubscribed and therefore reserved for first time parents only. We did a bunch of the Baby Academy online classes and I've made some mum pals through my son's nursery. My son has great taste in pals because their parents are all awesome 😁
