I had my 16 week midwife appointment today - just in case anyone hasn't had theirs yet, they did my blood pressure, urine sample / test and organised my whooping cough vaccination. But I also got to hear the heartbeat properly for the first time which was a lot more emotional than I expected!

Oh wow, that’s amazing 😍 did they use a Doppler type instrument? I was wondering about whooping cough vaccinations.

Yes, used the Doppler and found it straightaway although I know it's normal for them to have to have a bit of a poke around to locate it too.

She told me about the vaccine and asked if I was happy to go ahead or if I wanted more information before deciding. I chose to go ahead and it's administered by the nurse at the GP surgery, not the midwives themselves, so a separate appointment is made.

With mine, I didn't get to hear the heartbeat at all until my midwife appt after the 20 wk scan. I was able to go to the maternity day unit to get my whopping cough vaccination the same day as my 20 wk scan. Must be different everywhere!

I think it just depends on your midwife! The one I had with my daughter wouldn't do a doppler til after 20 weeks, but my current one did at 16. And I got my whooping cough vaccine done by midwife this time whereas I had to go to the treatment room and have a nurse do it first time round

You’ve reminded me I need to book my whooping cough vaccine, had to cancel the appointment I’d made at my 16 week midwife appointment. Thanks!

Is it normal to not be able to lift your head off the pillow? This craic is exhausting 😂 bare in mind I just found out and it's my first.

I was in bed by 7:00 p.m. most days and struggled to get up for 8 a.m. 😂 definitely normal. Good luck soldier 🫡

The tiredness in the 1st trimester is unreal. I'd go to sleep the same time as my toddler (7-7:30pm), sleep for a good 12-14 hours and still need a couple of hours nap in the day. And then go to bed at 7/7:30pm again. My boyfriend barely saw me as I'd be going to sleep as he was coming home 😂 I'm now 22 weeks and can't sleep so it balances itself out lol

I’m 22 weeks as well 😄 would be sleeping ok if it wasn’t for my 3 year old 🤣

My midwife said I’ll have my whooping cough vaccine at my 16 week appointment next week!

i have my 12 week nhs scan in two weeks. Do they do bloods for the combined test On the same day? If not, when do they do them! And when do you find out. I wanted to announce to family after my scan but worried I won’t have heard results yet
I've got my apt in 2 weeks also.
My scan is at 10 and then I've got another apt at 11 and got a form for vloods at the same time.

It seems to vary greatly where you live. I'm in Norfolk.

I had the blood test done just after my 12 week scan

It does depend on your hospital/area but most I know have had the bloods after the 12 week scan.
I think it took about 2 weeks to get the results back but they do ring you within 2/3 days if your results are higher than usual.

Hi ladies,
A little gestational diabetes question…
My baby’s abdominal circumference was over the 95th centile at the 20 week scan. I have had another scan today at 26 weeks and it’s still the same (all other measurements are bang on average).
I’ve been booked in for a glucose test next week. Anyone else had a baby with a big tummy? Was it linked to GD? And can anyone describe their symptoms of GD?
Thank you!

Has anyone flown with Jet2 while pregnant? I found a page of their terms and conditions and it says you need a fitness to fly certificate after 27 weeks but in the FAQs it reads like you need one regardless of how far along you are.

just going to answer my own question as I’ve found a different page that spells it out 🤣 might be useful to others:

My friend had three babies all with larger tummies and was tested but never had gd. Mine both measured average on the 20 week scan but I had gestational diabetes. Wasn’t picked up until the second pregnancy after my first was born at 9lb2.

My symptoms were being thirsty and getting hypoglycaemic episodes. I’d be quite shaky and sweaty if I’d not eaten in a while. It can be quite overwhelming to think about but it is manageable and doesn’t always mean you have to have intervention. I had my second naturally in the pool on the birthing unit.

Thank you so much for your reply!
I had a water birth with my first, and would love one again this time. I have felt upset at the thought of GD - I’ve had friends who have ended up on medication, with inductions etc.
So it’s great to hear a different side to it.
Thank you.

I recently flew with jet2 at 23 weeks and didn’t have a fit to fly letter. I got asked on several occasions by staff how far along in my pregnancy I was, and they were happy with my reply and didn’t need to see anything - good job really as I didn’t have anything!!
I flew at 33 weeks with Ryanair during my first pregnancy and had a fit to fly letter and no one ever asked to see it!
I guess it just all depends on the airline!

Silly question, but I'm hoping for a water birth all being well 🤞but I was thinking how does the midwife check how far dilated you are etc? Because obviously out of water they do checks (this is my first time so excuse the ignorance) but if you are in water obviously they can't see 😂 do you have to sort of get out every so often so they can check? I sound so stupid I know 🙈😂
