Michael Mosley

My closest friend is a doctor....and a heavy smoker. Can't smoke much at work but on her day off she'll happily smoke 40. Doctors make stupid choices just like the rest of us.

Exactly they may not practice what they preach, stand outside a hospital and see the staff smoking.

And despite Mosley using his doctor title to make him seem more knowledgeable with his diet programs and selling his books, most doctors don't know much about nutrition it's a tiny part of their learning, that's why you get refered to a specialist nutritionist.

I'm not badmouthing him and I didn't want him to die. But I'm not a fan but there is a lot of people making out he was this altruistic soul. He made a lot of of money out of the diet industry.

My experience of doctors (GPs anyway) is that they can be dangerously arrogant and out-of-date. Michael Moseley was willing to challenge the orthodoxy, and his approach to preventative medicine and self-help through healthy eating and a variety of exercises and practices was genuinely helpful to so many.

Harry Hill is a Dr but he doesn’t use the title, similarly he just qualified then moved into telly. Theres a big difference between qualifying, and being, a working Dr.

I do think if some good were to come from this, it would be to make the public aware that the heat is dangerous, and they’re not acclimatised the day after landing on holiday, so they do need to be careful. Especially as you age, ok 50s/60s isn’t “old-old” but you don’t cope so well as you did in the heat.

Rest in peace Michael. So many people have been grateful for your advice. May your legacy be your family's comfort. X

He seemed to be a genuine person (as much as you can tell these things from seeing someone on TV). He was also heavily invested in the science behind the dieting and many other areas he researched. I don't think it's true to say he didn't know or understand nutrition (I know your post doesn't say that). Providing accurate, accessible information seems to have been extremely important to him. I don't get the impression he was money driven, just passionate.

He also wrote his books with his wife who was a practicing GP amongst other professionals.

I didn't realise that he was a producer at the BBC and had predominantly worked in TV rather than having had a career as a Doctor though. I've found reading about his life journey really interesting (the Mail had a particularly well written obituary type article- which was a surprise).

The victim blaming on Facebook is rife and I come here and see some comments too. Poor man barely dead and being blamed for his choices 🥴

One thing I do wish people would stop mentioning is about him being a doctor and being knowledgeable about not going for walks in heat. having worked within the NHS a lot of doctors are medically competent but very lacking in common sense.

Also He was a doctor in qualifying only back in early 80s he didn't practise as a doctor he isn't licensed as a medical doctor and pretty much went straight into television after qualifying.
This!! How do people think everyone gets around when the sun is shining, suddenly start levitating?! He's a grown adult I'm sure he took measured risk and unfortunately his time was up and that's that, probably nothing he could have done to prevent it.

I can’t stand victim blaming. He may have felt too ill and wanted to get home as quickly as possibly and just became confused. Anyone can make a silly mistake in the heat of the moment. It’s so sad that it cost him his life in this case! I hope to god he died quickly and heartbreaking how near he was to help!

I agree it's so heartbreaking that he was so close to help and that he apparently lay unnoticed for days.

This is what is making me so sad, at how close he was!! He must have died instantly which is what we all hope, for a less cruel death. Bless him!

I think he was a great man who has done great good for humanity.
About him maybe dying of heatstroke. I have had low iron and heamoglobin for a few weeks and last week passed out in the bathroom and woke up in the bath. My bp was 71 over 55. What if I’d been out an about or driving ? He probably just passed out and fell

Sadly with more people living alone, lots of people can die or get very ill and go unnoticed.

Because I work from home I will get noticed. But as I get older and I am childless there will not be many people to check on me.

It’s been more or less dispelled though that he left the beach because he felt ill. His wife has said on record he went for a walk. Presumably then he felt fine when he set off. Obviously he may have had a health issue towards the end though.

“victim blaming” is a phrase that imo is getting a bit mis-applied. Speaking generally, there is a difference between blaming someone who was sexually attacked in the street for wearing a short skirt and blaming someone who ignored standard health warnings & advice and then as a result, suffered from health issues including an accident because of rough terrain.

I’m not saying MM should be blamed per se, but it’s probably relevant to cause of death.

It would be naïve to assume that authorities are not questioning what and how long his intended route were, and that health warnings to members of the public won’t come out because of this.

The problem with health warnings though is that some people are always going to ignore them, thinking they are healthy/strong/capable enough to avoid being affected.

Absolutely victim blaming is you getting attacked through no failt of your own because what you are wearing and similar situations. And getting blamed for it.

If someone does something stupid and dangerous like goes out near a cliff and falls off or goes hiking he high temperatures it's not victim blaming, it's just stupidity and being negligent about your own health, the only way you are a victim is of your own stupidity

Knowing he was so close to help (if he indeed could have been helped and didn’t die immediately from impact or another factor) is really heartbreaking. Tragic situation all round

Daily Mail reporting cctv footgae from the resort has now been seen with him picking his way down the slope before stumbling. So very sad for his poor family.

I’ve said consistently I’m not a fan and I don’t like his work - as a human with compassion I followed the story and am sad it’s come to this conclusion. I’m not sure he can be “victim blamed” but I personally prefer to wait until all the facts of his death are in, and also now he is confirmed dead, will be respectful of him and his family until after the funeral.

Not that it matters but I am confused about the he was feeling unwell story, where did that come from? I thought his wife had said it.
