The can of worms this has opened is turning my blood cold the more I read. Oh my bleeping god how many victims are there.

She took photos of them a lot I think. Even when she hadn’t got consent, like from baby Es mum who she surprised with the memory box (she wrote explicitly in the notes that she’d got consent but hadn’t). Maybe also at that point avoiding convo with that mum as she may have brought up the bleeding at 9.
The only time she struggled to find the camera seems to have been when baby Bs incredibly strange fleeting rash (similar to As and many others) was there. She took so long it had gone by the time she was back. How unfortunate eh.
And people still claim she’s innocent 😳

I’m not sure what these people are expecting of a healthcare serial killer? “Hey, Suzy, am just gonna harm this child to kill her, can you just watch me and aim a CCTV camera at me?” The whole reason they continue is because they’re not seen and not suspected until way into it all.
Times article about Karen Rees. Of course she believed (hoped!) Lucy was ‘innocent’!!! Worst thing that could happen to Karen Rees would be Lucy being found guilty as she now faces a ton of scrutiny that’s completely justified. Still not taking an ounce of responsibility though.

She had believed until the conclusion of the trial that the nurse was innocent

“I have no doubt at all that she was guilty of these despicable crimes, having seen the reports of the evidence,” she said. “I did not attend the trial so I had an incomplete picture until the verdicts were announced, and more detail provided.”

Rees said she had refused to believe in Letby’s guilt because she had had regular meetings with her after her suspension from the neonatal unit in June 2016, and had “witnessed her in complete distress, crying and swearing her innocence”.

Rees said: “She was very convincing. I now know that this was a calculated and successful attempt to make me believe her story, and I was deceived, as were so many others.

It is understood that Rees regularly met Letby for coffee in the two years after her suspension, which she said was part of her job, and that the pair met socially outside work. She had told Letby “the intention was to get her back on to the neonatal unit”, according to The Sunday Times.

When Rees retired in March 2018, four months before Letby’s arrest, the killer bought her a leaving present and attended a small farewell party.

Rees, who lives in north Wales, said she had understood that the most life-threatened babies had been placed in Letby’s care and that no performance problems had been raised until Brearey contacted her on June 24, 2016, demanding her removal. She said that the neonatal unit’s manager, Eirian Powell, had assured her that there were no concerns about Letby. Powell has not responded to requests for comment.

When approached before the verdict was delivered but after all the evidence in the trial had been heard, Rees’s sister-in-law, who lives next door to her, said that the former nursing director believed that Letby was innocent.

A source at the Countess of Chester said: “There are still a small number of people on the neonatal unit who think she is innocent. They are finding it difficult to believe she could have done it, because for so long they were fed the narrative that Letby was being blamed by consultants who were making excuses for their own mistakes.”
What did does Letby have on these people to be able to flaunt about like this when arrested for murder?!

I've known a few people in my time being able to get away with anything and keep their job and the rumors always circulate that they must have serious dirt on higher ups that would come out if they were sacked.

These hospital bosses were so unprofessional.

I'm not sure the parents want to continue pursuing legal action, but I feel like I would be going after every person who allowed this to continue happening and putting babies in serious harms way. I keep thinking about how awful the damage would be if she had been allowed to return to that ward.

how does a junior band 5 nurse get so pally with those so high up top it’s mad.

I’m a band 7 nurse and the top managers like Karen Rees etc equivalents wouldn’t even know my name let alone go out for coffee or attend leaving drinks I can’t get my head around it
I’ve never even met anyone above a 7!

I’m sorry if this is really random but I’ve dipped in and out of these threads with you lovely people as the trial has gone on but I wondered why Lucy letby was not kept anonymous during trial etc? So sorry if stupid question. I just can’t believe how someone so evil can even be among normal people!! And the arrogance of her not turning up to face justice. Disgusting.
Suspects are named when they are charged with a crime here, unless there is a good reason for it (i.e. that naming would prejudice the trial or that it might leave the defendant or their family open to being attacked by the public). That reason is balanced against what's seem as the public interest

She’ll have been extremely manipulative, coming across as eager to please and willing to do anything at work (as was seen with overtime etc) so they all thought she was amazing. That combined with seeming sweet and innocent (lovely Lucy) will have quickly had senior staff on side because she was the perfect employee for them - a ‘yes’ girl.

That move to the office job was probably in her favour for getting them onside.
You’ll find lots of nurses (ahem) do overtime to help the team and ensure a safe pt ratio/that they’re seen. It doesn’t make them (me) a yes girl, an a kisser or eager to please. Just felt that needed to be said. Jesus, I can’t win in this job! If I don’t put in the hours patients suffer, if I do then I’m a manipulative psychopathic murderer 😆

I'm afraid I disagree with some of the below. It was establishe throughout the investigation and court case that she is highly intelligent. Even the judge said so when sentencing her. So I really don't think that is a trait we can put into doubt. What I think her achilles tendon was that she is incredibly narcissistic and think she is better than everyone else, therefore they wouldn't catch her. She got away with it for years (way before Child A) and got cocky, so she was unprepared for what was to come. If she had truly realised they were onto her she would have disposed of or hidden a lot of the paperwork she had. She just wasnt expecting them.

I believe she has planned this for a very long time, and she decided on this career for malevolent reasons. Maybe she didn't grow up specifically thinking she would murder, but to have that level of power and control over lives and emotions. Though it also wouldn't surprise me if she was thinking about murder and violence towards babies for a long time as well.

One of the reasons I think this is because Lucy had told Dippy Dawn that she wanted to be a neonatal nurse because her mum had had a tricky birth with her, and she is so grateful to those who saved her life. Separately, that person on Facebook said Lucy wanted to work with babies because she couldn't have children. Regardless of whether Lucy was lying about these things or not, the fact she felt the need to justify her desire to go into neonatal nursing with dramatic personal stories is strange. Being a neonatal nurse is universally admired, and it makes me wonder if she had guilty knowledge of her motives so was pre-emptively justifying herself.

I don't think any of this was an accidental addiction, the same person said she would maliciously sabotage other kids' school work and make up lies about herself for attention, so she's been sly, deceitful and vicious from a young age. Also, if she was just hooked on the buzz of resuscitations, she wouldn't have made the victims unsavable (such as with air embolisms), or sabotaged babies at the end of her shifts.

She is arrogant and has an over-inflated opinion of her own intelligence. She didn't spread out the attacks more because in my opinion, she is not intelligent enough to think that far ahead, and also underestimated other people's ability to notice. This underestimation was bolstered by continually getting away with it; the June 2016 rampage followed managers absolving her of any involvement in May 2016.

I think she didn't get rid of the paperwork for the very same reason: she was not bright enough to realise she could still get caught. The aftermath of her being removed from the ward included her filing a successful grievance and successfully fighting to be returned to her old role, plus the police had been investigating for 14 months before they raided her house. She probably thought she was in the clear, or thought she would get round to getting rid of it at some point. These were likely trophies she she would have been reluctant. She probably never imagined she would get raided and searched - as can be seen from how willingingly she lets the police into her house.

She definitely didn't write those embarrassing post-it notes with the intention of anyone seeing them, because they're too indecipherable and incoherent.

Correct, that is not her real voice and she's definitely trying to appear meek and mild. When I saw her during cross examination by the prosecution, her voice was louder, lower and very confident. She was attempting to appear authoritative and professional when I saw her.

Angrily confronted anyone who failed to attend every day of their daughter’s defence. Wow. I wonder if that’s why Janet Cox was seen crying. Not that I have any sympathy.

And I’d disagree again 😅 sorry! It’s not an unusual feature for people to keep things related to their crime in order to relive everything. It would have been impossible for her to dispose of them because it’s utterly precious to her. A blue towel with a baby’s resus on! There’s not a chance she didn’t know the implication of having kept that under her bed for years. It’s utterly precious to her and there’s no way she could bin it.

She will have been resigned to the fact that she isn’t a normal human and at some point she would be stopped and her fun would end. She even acquired more notes and more handovers after her first arrest, that’s how important it was to her.
Hey I better get rid of this note that says I’m evil because I’ve been around 16 baby deaths over this year… nope Letby tucked it into the 2016 diary. Precious.

I’ve given this example a few times so sorry for everyone that’s heard it before.
There was a man in prison for a long time for multiple rapes and murders, the whole time he was convicted and serving time as the only perpetrator. Eventually he disclosed to the prison psychologist that he offended with another person and that the other man was actually the ring leader. They would listen to a certain album on tape in the car every time they went out looking for a victim. This other man had been free for years and years. He had gotten away with it. Until his friend’s confession. When police finally had enough on him to search his home, under his floorboards was the cassette tape that the pair of them had listened to, he clearly could not be parted with it.
it’s about an attachment to the crimes and a special secret that gives them excitement and thrill. Some can’t let go of the victims bodies, some keep underwear, some keep a big diary full of notes on what they did. Some revisit the crime scene often (Letby got that pleasure every time she worked). Some join the search, go to the vigil. She did not get normal excitement, emotions or thrills from life, sex, relationships.

By the time she killed the triplets, she was utterly out of control. She could have easily killed Q the very next day. How many consecutive days could her designated babies die for? I don’t believe that’s stupidity or all down to arrogance but just an utter compulsion to kill and hurt and once she’d finally got multiples she was on a total high. She will have known for a long time that she wouldn’t be normal or live normally. She didn’t mind the arrest too much and she enjoyed the trial. None of it matters at all to her in the way that we would think or feel about it.

She was talking about Letby though, not applying that to the rest of us who do extra hours.

I think that Karen Rees is going to go down the line of “I was manipulated by Lucy too…” blah blah which absolutely stinks because she should have maintained professional distance and objectivity and listened to what the consultants were actually saying to her as a manager not be socialising with LL. This is all so disgusting.

It's such obvious bull. Surely she will get nowhere with that defence!?

It was not established. An IQ test was never mentioned or presented to court. Some people shared their opinions. None said she was "highly" intelligent. The judge just said she was intelligent along with other descriptors.

From what I saw in court, she was very articulate, which is a form of intelligence, but she was not intelligent overall. Some of her behaviours and the things she decided to say bordered on stupid.

Also, she was unable to come up with realistic or feasible explanations, when so many of her online supporters were able to come up with excuse after excuse, and innocent reason after innocent reason. After seven years of thinking about this, she had hardly come up with anything at all for any aspect of her defence, which indicates both a lack of creativity, and a poor ability to understand how other people think.

So for people who are convinced that UK prisoners have access to unlimited amounts of luxury consumer goods and electronic entertainment devices I'll put a link here to what is really available.

A few notes worthy of stressing:
~All of this must be purchased from the prison shop. You cannot order from eBay & Amazon as I've seen morons claiming on DM comments.
~There is no choice in brands. What is there is available by tender from the manufacturers/sellers with the prison service.
~Price mark-ups on every one of these items makes Waitrose look like a discount retailer.
~The prison shop may be used at maximum once per week. There are strict limits on how much of any item can be purchased
~Any rule infringements, violence or disciplinary problems will automatically result in a withdrawal of prison shop access for specified periods of time lasting from one week to several months. This is in addition to other punitive measures taken such as withdrawal of visits.
~The only items you can purchase upon Intake are toiletries & phone credit. However, it may be more than a month at best or until such times as you are released from suicide watch before you can purchase anything from the prison shop.
~If you have not already arranged for someone to have power of attorney over your finances before you are sentenced it can be a nightmare trying to get that done from prison.
~Any debts that you have before sentencing are still due to be paid (mortgage, credit cards, medical expenses, utilities etc) and your property can and will be seized by bailiffs in lieu if such payments are not forthcoming.

All of these items can and do vary a bit from prison to prison. Open prisons have slightly more generous terms, obviously. But only slightly.

Really interesting, thanks.

I do have to ask...condoms?

I’ve been reading these threads but haven’t posted yet. This is how I feel she looks in her arrest photo/mugshot. To me, I don’t see the same hardened criminal expression that so many other killers have in their mugshots but I think she looks resigned to the fact it’s over and her “fun” has been stopped.
it’s awful that she was able to kill once and get away with it, let alone continue for so long. Those poor babies and families.
