I found the recording of the hotel worker really strange. I speak quite good Spanish and it sounded to me like Liam was already dead and the caller knew that, it was my first thought. His tone was off and the fact he explicitly said the way that he was going to die (or had died) and that the police weren't needed, just the medical team, also surely hotel staff can always enter a hotel room?

Maybe he was thrown from the balcony and thats why he landed head first?

Maybe there's a cover up?

Cover up of what? Witnesses saw him kicking off, his room contained alcohol and drugs? He was quite obviously in a manic state and thought he could jump into the pool.

The person on the phone initially wanted help as he was so agitated and they were concerned he may jump from the balcony as he didn’t want to be in the room and they’d made him go back there. The phone disconnected and by the end of the call he said just send an ambulance basically, meaning don’t worry about police as he’s now injured (didn’t realise he was dead) and needs medical help.

I think it’s insulting to suggest a cover up. It’s not difficult to fact check.

What a sad and tragic end to his life.

I remember the first time I saw him, back in 2008 on The X Factor when he was only 14. He sang a Frank Sinatra song at his audition. I was the same age, and I was disapointed when he didn't end up getting through to the live shows. His life would've been very different if he didn't return in 2010 and become part of One Direction.

It feels like this wasn't meant to happen. Liam never suited the tattooed, celebrity, rich and famous life. He always seemed like the odd one out in 1D, with his more mature Michael Buble type style. If he didn't return to X Factor, he probably would still be alive today and not got caught up with drink and drugs. He probably would've had a normal life, working as a local pub or wedding singer or something.

Its horrible how the music industry chews up and spits people out.

I think I read somewhere that fame is in and of itself, traumatising. Similar to life events like bereavements or homelessness.

All of those five lads were extremely vulnerable, cognitively and emotionally still developing when they were at their most famous. And they were like the Beatles, they just exploded. They went from anonymous teenagers to the most famous lads in the world. And after a few short years, left to figure out their overwhelming wealth and fame when the band came to a sudden stop. I remember thinking at the time, jeez, other people are graduating college and getting their lives started, and these 22 year olds are able to retire. And some of them continued on, forged a solo career, others like Liam really just didn't.

That kind of trauma is going to test your resilience, your mental health, your sense of self, your boundaries, how you've been raised, the support network around you. I can't say how I would handle it, quite honestly. I was raised by a narcissist mother, had a fair amount of family trauma, diagnosed ADHD later in life, dealt with eating disorders and depression before that. Just living has been hard at times. I can't imagine my background and neurodiversity and propensity towards mental health struggles - AND THEN - the intense, mindbending experience of being known for my picture perfect image that I have no control over, working 80 hour weeks, being stalked by fans and recognised everywhere, my relationships and appearance being scrutinised, beginning to believe, hey, I might be a big deal and then it's all snatched away from you and you're left with your head in a spin.

None of it forgives abuse, domestic violence, drug abuse, or any of the fan exploitation or the stuff that has come out about him. But I feel like, I understand the lack of coping. I understand the mental health crisis and the drug spiral and the way that he died. I feel like he didn't have that foundation or genetic disposition that perhaps Niall had, who seems a grounded lad with a supportive family and small circle and a whole life and business and identity away from his fame. It's desperately sad.

It's the usual deification of anyone who's passed. It's immensely shocking that he's passed, but sadly not totally unexpected as others on here have said. I certainly didn't think it would all lead to this, and I'm sure Maya didn't either, so I feel for her no doubt being targeted by fans of his. Social media often really does amplify the worst of "humanity".

The girl who took the pics of Liam in the lobby says in the DM article

''I came into the hotel, and he was waiting by the elevator, and it was so clear he wanted someone to recognise him, there was something a bit desperate about him.

It's completely acceptable stop moaning, it's okay to snark on celebs rest of time but not because they are dead, it's actually best time to as they can't sue you.

I don't know him whilst it's sad for his friends and family that's who it should be sad for, People really need to stop wallowing in pity for someone who didn't know they exists death.

I’ve seen you mention it being a snark site several times now. And while yes, you’re right, you can indulge in some bitchy anonymous gossip whilst also having compassion for someone’s struggle and the friends and family dealing with huge grief. This site isn’t JUST for snark.

I always find these ex X factor stars crawling out of the woodwork moaning about the treatment irritating. They were quite happy at the time to go along with it all yet when their careers tanked they decide to bite the very hand that once fed them. Katie Waissel, Rebecca Ferguson, Matt Cardle, Steve Brookstein etc were all hyped to be the next big thing so it must sting when you are dropped like a stone because either the public don’t get behind you to support you when it actually matters or that you are so close to “making it” yet don’t have the talent and drive needed. Without the x factor, to be blunt they would be singing in clubs scraping by.

As for struggling with the pressures of fame, I think much depends on family support. Niall and Harry seem to be quite tight with their families and actively sought to keep them fairly normal. Niall lived not far from me outside London and was often seen popping to Nando’s on his own without security etc. He led a private life and his pop star life which were separate. Liam meanwhile seemed quite unsettled without that kind of family support around him.

I must admit although I feel deeply sad for Liam I find the adulation for celebrities who go off the rails and end up dying a bit annoying. In contrast if a normal person is a drug/alcohol addict (mostly due to adverse life experiences) they are seen as weak, lowly members of society and nobody really cares. Celebrities at least have a lot more support available to them if they so wish as they have the financial means. An average person with these problems is just left to rot.

He’s looked erratic for a long time now and in a strange way it's not surprising to hear this news but it is still quite shocking all the same. Just thinking of his poor family, that’s their son and brother, who may have not even been told the news at that point, aren’t there to goto him instantly, and have to see that on TMZ going around the world and now on SM, I hate that about todays world, just no decency left anywhere.

It must be a weird situation for the rest of 1D. The expectation of the level of grief is at odds with the reality of their relationship with Liam.

It’s like being expected to publicly grieve and declare love over a workmate you spent an intense amount of time with years ago but don’t really know any more.

Entertainment is such a bizarro world.

i was thinking this too. they’re really writing a message for the boy they knew rather than the young man he was/became, and it must have been so tough (especially for zayn and harry, who i guess had a more distant relationship with him) to think of the words for it. i did think that zayn’s statement was full of regret and very honest on that front though.

Someone I went to school with posted on their Facebook today that her mum passed away suddenly this afternoon with an aneurysm seemingly completely fine this morning. It’s so scary how fragile life is

i mean, he literally just died and was part of one of the most successful british bands of recent times, i would be more surprised if radio stations weren’t playing constant one direction today (we have radio 1 on in work and they’ve judged it really well imo, considering their audiences’ average age).

People just can’t seem to grasp that tragic things happen to people (even global superstars) and that’s all it is - no big cover up or conspiracy - just a bad situation or bad luck.
you’d think by now, with most recent cases being Jay slater and Nicola bulley that people would realise the most obvious solution is almost always the right one.
