There's such a thing online of making yourself seem poorer/more disadvantaged than you are. I don't think she came from being massively rich but her background seems pretty middle class from what she's said. Imo if you were living on the breadline you wouldn't be able to spend 1,500$ on a (pretty bad, from her level of italian) language course abroad just to get a visa to stay there
