I think being told you’re lucky is fine in some contexts but if Jack or another child is trying to explain a genuine upset (even minor) then that refrain constantly is just really invalidating, just because other people have it worse doesn’t mean a child is never allowed to be upset.
Plus I was more thinking if she was trying to tell someone how stressful she found the chaos which I have no doubt she did. Sometimes young children (we worked out Jack was 3 when the fostering started IIRC) also don’t have the language to explain the bigger issue so the whine is “Mum wouldn’t let me do *minor thing*” and the adults around them should be receptive to trying to see that’s what they can verbalise of a bigger issue.
Some children are resilient enough it wouldn’t bother them, nothing Jack has said makes me think she was one of them - and I think the adult Jack using her “I’m autistic/ADHD I can’t help it” as a refrain likely stems from her being invalidated and told the foster children couldn’t help it (which was probably true).
It’s a very difficult balance to balance the needs of bio children with foster children and I don’t think her parents managed it, as much as I’m sure they helped countless other children, IMO they failed Jack. Fostering isn’t for every family, sometimes that’s because of the parents but sometimes it’s because of the other children in the home and that’s ok to acknowledge and doesn’t make people bad people:
All of that said, an adult she should have moved on from it, got therapy and learnt to live with it… and the way she describes the foster children as feral as an adult woman is absolutely vile. She seems stuck perpetually in the angry teenage “why isn’t it about me” stage when she’s by her own admission had all the access to support and resources to get help to move on and live a more fulfilling life.

What does this actually mean? I must be dense. What "critical area of our life together"?
I know a few foster families, I have spent time with the kids, most of them were absolute flipping angels. I'm very fond of two of the recent teenagers & have so much respect for the way they deal with the hand they were dealt with their own families (not always dysfunctional btw illness & death of a parent can lead to kids needing foster care). Not saying that many won't have struggles & they will hopefully do therapy to work through some tit but this feral / disruptive /damaged image is not a complete picture by far. And as far as the impact on Jack goes, family home dynamics can be disrupted in many different ways, divorce, remarriage, step siblings, elders coming to live in the home etc & she can eff all the way off if she thinks her stable privileged upbringing was 'difficult'.
Greenbelt are going to look really bleeping stupid when she doesn’t turn up.

Was with you right up to the last sentence. I don’t believe she’s ever felt a strong emotion for anyone other than herself. That’s not be being nasty, or snippy, that’s genuinely how I see her.

Meh...I chose separate sciences at GCSE to pursue my dream of being a vet. Head of Sciences told my mum and I at Yr 9 parents' evening that I probably wasn't up to going on to study what I needed to achieve this based on my performance, application and attitude to date.
And gosh was she right! 2 Ds and a C.
Couldn't be arsed, so I did the sensible thing, had a baby (the C was in Biology so....) and dropped out of my A levels (none of which were science related).

The foster situation plus an ill parent (mixed with probably a genetic propensity to some cluster-b-esque state of affairs) explains a lot about her personality I think. The constant need to be performatively unwell in one way or another because that's probably how people in her household got attention...
