That was terrible. I love it. šŸ˜˜

Question about the 'recipe' on JM website - can I substitute fresh mint for the straggly old mint?
Noooooooo how could you even suggest such a thing. You could however substitute rotten gooey coriander. Herbs are interchangeable but they must be in a state that will risk your health.

It just amazes me how many stories she tells of experiences a lot of people wonā€™t ever get to have and no one notices that this doesnā€™t tie in with the whole ā€˜Iā€™m poorā€™ narrative and she canā€™t see that not everything is about money and sheā€™s had some huge opportunities in life that others can only dream of and still she plays the victim.

Happy thread 300 - Iā€™ve not been here long but I love this space - you all make me laugh so much during a bit of a crappy time and Iā€™m learning so much from you all.

We used to do the cans on a string thing as kids, we got the idea from a show called Playschool which sold them under the name 'Romper Stompers' which is where the film Romper Stomper got the name from. I think my brother managed to break his ankle using them so it's probably not the greatest idea to put out to the general public.

She doesnā€™t sound posh to me, she sounds middle class. I live a bit south of her, and her accent (minus the perma bunged up nose) is pretty much the middle class default. It sits somewhere between the posh honking private school ā€œgap yaā€ one and the dropped Hs and glottal stop estuary one.

Iā€™m rather partial to a Vienetta, but why do we have them on our heads?

The Vienettas are making me so happy but I'm going to sound like a maniac if I try to explain it IRL. Brava, and grazie, whoever came up with and then executed this!

Soz, I typed too slow to fit this on the last thread so now it's going here where it's no longer relevant.

I think growing up in a middle class liberal family comes with a lot of contradictions. The overt messaging is that you should always remember how lucky you are, be understanding of anyone less fortunate, and not stereotype or judge others. But what usually happens in practice is that your parents can afford to live in a nice area, so you go to a decent school and make friends with other kids from 'nice' families, and basically don't cross paths with many working class people - def not ones who fit the Shameless or 'get all the illegals out' stereotypes. Then when you do encounter people like that you feel uncomfortable because you're in an unfamiliar situation and don't fit in, the same way a kid from an inner city comp would feel uncomfortable if they suddenly found themselves surrounded by kids from Eton, except that in your case it comes with a load of guilt because you've spent your whole life being told it's bad and wrong to feel that way. Not anyone's fault, it's just how things work out.

Add on top of that sneery media tropes about 'the bank of mum and dad' and general stereotypes that suburbanites are dull/clueless and a teenage identity crisis is practically inevitable. Most teenagers are kind of dumb, so we deal with it by doing things like trying to make ourselves sound more working class, getting really embarrassed about anything that might mark us out as 'posh', and adopting completely random and contradictory political takes depending on what we think makes us sound most open-minded at the time (e.g. "anyone opposed to unlimited immigration is a Nazi fascist", but five minutes later "we need to stop stereotyping working class northerners as bigots"), not realising that everyone else sees through all this and we're being extremely cringe.

For normal people, there comes a time where you realise other people have better things to think about than your background and interests, and as long as you're not a snobby twit no-one cares. At that point you learn to just be yourself instead of trying to think the 'right' way all the time. But for an emotionally stunted slopgoblin like Jack, I think she's still stuck in the teenage mindset of being convinced that everyone else is thinking about her at all times, and as a result she's still really self-conscious about all this pointless tit that any well-adjusted person would have stopped worrying about by the time they turned 22. That's why a lot of her behaviour seems so random, like lashing out at Gu puddings or needing to agree with the squigs about EVERYTHING even when it makes no sense - she doesn't have a coherent personality, she's trying to guess how to behave based on her ideas about how other people think, but most of her guesses are wildly off target and so her resulting actions often look erratic and bizarre. Just my opinion, obvs.
Personal Waffle re class

Proper working class, from an ex mining town, loads of siblings. Went to a private school, a GDST one. Via a very large scholarship and bursary, and my very comfortable but certainly not wealthy Grandparents (Iā€™m their only grandchild) covering the rest like uniforms, bus fare, trips, extra curriculars etc. None of my siblings went as they would never have passed the entrance tests. Soz not soz.

I agree with everything you said - I was 1 of 4 out of 120 kids in my year that did not come from a wealthy background. I didnā€™t have much to talk to them about as we had duck all in common, and alongside my undiagnosed NDs, it was a lonely place to be.

At the very least, they had 4 - 7 bedroom homes in the most exclusive areas, at least two very expensive hobbies and had extensively travelled. I lived in a 4 bed council house on a rough estate and my travel was limited to the 20 miles to school and back šŸ„“

Fortunately I did make an incredible friend, who has been in my life since the day we met 23 years ago, but she was the year above me. She has a lot of MC guilt, tbh I fully encourage her to take up everything that gets handed to her because duck having a difficult life when you donā€™t need to.

Jack likes to pretend she has a 'common' speaking voice. She really doesn't She's described it as coarse and Estuary before now, when it's neither. Hideous nasal tone aside, you can tell from her intonation and pronunciation that she's not got a WC Essex accent and is pretending to speak like a MC person - she is a middle class person.

You can definitely tell in the videos that pop up (there's a particularly grim poetry reading, which I SHAN'T link to because eeeew) when she's trying to act like a Poor, that she's faking the accent.
