If anyone was wondering, by no means I'm trying to excuse Jack's behaviour! I also believe that he should have applied to more Unis, not only Oxford just for the sake of it. It's just I don't think that his Youtube channel 'worsened' his application.
How far does Oxford check their students' channels/social media? For example, I've seen Eve Bennett criticising some aspects of Oxford (like online education during lockdown) and as far as I know she has never had problems with Uni due to her comments. I know Jack's case is different (Eve's already enrolled as a student and Jack is not) but I just think that his application wasn't good enough.

Should have thought of that last year really. 😅 And yet his last-minute dissertation and essay videos are still up...

If you're mortgage or rent free you're not really 'living on your own'. I live on my own and it would be a million times easier if there was no rent to pay. He again is privileged and tone deaf

You'd think that Jack had never even considered getting a job in his whole life. If it's not exotic nor FOMO-inducing for others, he's not interested. How he thinks he'll be able to afford to stay living in London is interesting - bank of Mum and Dad perhaps?

Yeah true. I guess I kind of meant that writing a YouTuber advice book is clearly not going to having any bearing on whether or not you'll get onto an English Literature degree.

Did we watch the same video...? 😮 I think Ibz 's video is bullshit, he says that if someone applies for a Masters and then gets in and thinks they deserve to be there then that means they're arrogant... but if you earn an offer you DO deserve to be there, and thinking you do isn't arrogant at all! Ibz definitely believed he deserved to be at Cambridge ... Why is that okay but believing you should be there for Postgraduate isn't??!

Jack is a different situation anyway, he clearly doesn't deserve to be there as he wasn't good enough for an offer.

Also remember this is Ibz 's SECOND rejection. He's a year ahead of Jack, so to speak. Feels weird sticking up for Jack 🤣 but I feel like we can only compare his reaction next year to this video from Ibz. If Jack applies again and is rejected again and then decides to move on he's done exactly the same thing as Ibz so.

Pretty sure the law states that if you go to a lower tier you should still follow your original tier's rules - or it did at one point anyway. Obviously no one follows that anyway.
Either way, a part or whole of Sussex is moving to Tier 4 on Boxing day now anyway

I can't speak for Oxford but yes university systems do match previous records as it picks up names and date of births and merge. Well some do anyway. Again I can't speak for Oxford.

And in some instances names and circumstances are most certainly remembered.

Yeah I'm just talking about Oxford, other universities may have flagging systems which do pick out students who have been rejected in the past but Oxford doesn't have any system like that. And of course I agree that re-applying with the exact same application is not advisable in any circumstances! But at least in the Oxford admissions system, a re-application in itself is not a bad thing and there's no formal (or informal) policy to treat re-applicants differently. Especially as re-applying is a lot more common at the postgrad level so isn't unusual; by and large your chances are higher applying postgrad compared to undergrad.

I don't think he's said really, but he wanted to live abroad this year so I think that's what he's planning next year.

I don't mind him but the constant Oxford chat is annoying.

Also - he is definitely gay - no issue here - but he needs to accept it!

someone will probably know more than me but I’m sure I read somewhere that bookshops can’t return copies that the author has just taken it upon themselves to sign. Best hope it sells then!

I didn't do English Literature, but I did film production and for our dissertation I did political ideology and gender representation in superhero films. That was because I like superhero films and political ideology and gender representation are strong interests of mine and something that deeply matters to me. Your dissertation takes up a very good chunk of your third year (and even a bit before that) so you've really got to do something that not only interests or, but something that really matters to you. So yeah, it definitely is a bit of a rainbow flag.

On the other hand, didn't he also base the dissertation on one author? He could simply just have a deep interest in that author. My dissertation started off so broad with my research before narrowing it down. I feel he could have started off with the author and then the research narrowed down and he found that the best thing to talk about.

Totally agree, he’s one of the few studytubers I don’t find incessantly annoying but he definitely comes across as a bit of a cliche naive middle class student

I can sort of see why books may not be too bad to take. I have a ton of books that I will probably never re-read again so sending them to someone to read probably isn't that bad of an idea, but seeing as he is a lit student and you'd expect him to be well-read it's also a risky thing because he may have just read the book already

Also, postage prices for books are probably pretty high too so definitely not factoring in a student budget on that front
