Extract just in from the "novel" that Jack (not a librarian and not a French resident) is attempting to write.




Jacques De Bouffant woke up in his Paris apartment. It was a good apartment. It was a strong apartment, and it was in Paris, just like Hemingway's apartment once was. Today, Jacques was going to put the war behind him and go to the bull fight. Yep - that's right, time to log onto Twitter.

He'd posted last night about how many books he'd read (164) igniting a small war in the process. Which is why he was glad he had used SURF SHARK. SURF SHARK has a VPN - which stands for virtual private network - which means that no matter who you annoy online, you're never going to get hacked. SURF SHARK for all your online needs.

When Jacques had finished responding to the bullshit on Twitter, he decided to leave his apartment and do something French. That's right, something French, in actual France! He walked to Les Invalides. It was a strong walk, a good walk, a manly walk. He had only been there a short while when his mind (it was a good mind, it was a strong mind) started wandering back to Burham and his days at that ancient, highly prestigious university where he'd achieved a First*. What he had done at Burham still haunted him. He was a strong man, he was a manly man, he was a man's man's man, but he was also a guilty man!

It all started one day towards the end of term, when it had been snowing, and Jacques (although he was merely Jacque back then) and his friends from Cos Play Soc had lured a fresher who was dressed as the white rabbit from Alice in Wonderland to participate in a hike all the way to Waitrose. It had gone wrong. Or had it? And in short, Bunny was dead!

As an actual trained librarian (who also has a 1st class English Lit degree and a librarianship degree) I'm irritated at this!! Being a librarian doesn't involve reading and reviewing books!! I wish he would just commit to staying in London and get a nice apartment with his friends he seems so much more himself when he’s home, the Paris facade is so shallow and empty and fooling no one, he always does things because he feels like he should (eg reading certain books, travelling bc he’s young and that’s what he should be doing) instead of finding out what he actually wants to do

Having worked with uni admissions before. Jack's attitude is fairly common in the more entitled applicants who can't comprehend being rejected. Also nothing puts academics and admissions staff off more than someone who doesn't take no for an answer. What that is telling them if you have attitude at the admissions stage, what will you be like when you get marks you don't like, or a unit or group you don't like etc etc. It speaks to character.

One of my friends volunteered as a Clearing call operator last year at our university, and one student called purely to demand a place when he'd been rejected on Results Day, then his mother called to demand it too, then (and I have no idea why they agreed to do this) his MP called to ask if there was anything they could do for the rejected applicant, because the MP himself was an alumnus...

I feel like Jack isn't far off this type of person.

Such a wild concept, the genre of translated fiction! such an exciting entirely new concept!! and did you know these books were not written with English-speaking readers in mind? Can you imagine we are not the center of the universe and not every single piece of fiction is written specifically to cater to English-speaking audiences???

I don't live in an English speaking country and the way people from the US or UK talk about translated books is so baffling to me. When I walk into a bookshop probably 70% will be translated books, most from English but also other languages. It's just perfectly normal. But sometimes it seems like people think translated books are automatically "difficult" or too out there? I don't really get it. Imagine someone in Germany being like "ugh this JK Rowling, sounds interesting but I'm not sure, it might be hard for me to understand because she's FOREIGN"

It's ridiculous to assume that because people have 20-30 minutes to watch YouTube once or twice a week they're living off of their mom and dad's money and not studying or working. One of the complaints I see a lot about studytubers on this site is how they don't show a good work/ life balance, but you think watching YouTube sometimes means you don't work or study?

Also, I can't remember how long his videos are typically so my time might be wrong, as with his upload schedule, but my point stands

Am I meant to believe the exact day he reads the heartstopper books he magically gets invited to the premiere? I mean sure, he doesn't have much of a reason to lie about that but what a coincidence that just as he's making a video about reading the books, holding the book in his hands, he gets the invitation? On easter sunday nonetheless (not sure when agency people or whoever calls to tell him he's been invited work but I'd imagine it's not necessarily on easter sunday - at least for non-urgent matters?). Idk it's not a big deal but it sort of bugged me because I felt like he's being dishonest (or maybe it really was a coincidence, idk he might've just been reading them in anticipation for the show, wanting to make a video about it as the show is released, that'd make sense but it just felt like too much of a coincidence)
