Translation: "This was staged."

So these vapid clowns travelled to Cambodia for a humanitarian aid mission and then piss about avoiding the job and pretending to read for Instagram photo ops? How is this not a holiday again?

Can someone please explain to me why this guy's insta bio has 'youtube’s resident librarian', when booktube has been around for ages. Slight whiff of arrogance, entering the booktube game only a few months(?) ago, and then assuming that title.

I've never been able to get into his content... Any time someone comes across as the sort of person who might *finger snap and point* right after telling a really shitty pun, I just can't stomach their videos, and he is the epitome of that energy.

What are your legitimate complaints about Jack?
Jack accepted money from the NHS for an ad campaign during a pandemic, at a time when the underfunding of the NHS and lack of pay for nurses and frontline healthcare workers was at the forefront of the news. Jack never thought to refuse the money and do work for a good cause for free, and never donated this money to a relevant charity.

Jack took money from a Holocaust charity, too. He never returned it, and it only went unchecked because so much focus was on Ruby at the time with her endless lies and repeat offenses. Jack kept his head down, let Ruby take all the flack and people largely forgot about it. It still happened, much as Jack would like to conveniently forget about it.

Jack lies about the extent to which he reads almost as much as Ruby does. He often struggles to review a book beyond the most vague back cover blurb and buzzword pull quotes. All the while, he proclaims himself "YouTube's Resident Librarian", because that's not egotistical or anything.

He engaged in, endorsed and encouraged all the same toxic productivity habits as Ruby, Jade, Eve and Ali did/do. He quietly distanced himself from it later to pivot to different content without ever addressing his culpability in that. It still happened, and still undoubtedly had a damaging impact on countless impressionable viewers, much as Jack would like to conveniently forget about it.

Like Ruby, and others repped by Sixteenth, he's run blatantly dishonest undeclared ads and plant reviews. He makes sure that every video is an ad and that practically none of them are clearly labelled as such prior to clicking, in breach of ASA rules. He frequently runs ads glowingly endorsing products and services he never uses.

Not to mention the time he reviewed Vee's book, coincidentally on the exact same day as Ruby, at the exact same time as Holly Gabrielle and others were shoehorning the book into their content without mention of their ties to Vee and the big conflict of interest inherent in them being friends with her, being gifted the book, invited to a big launch party (at the height of Covid, no masks present). Jack made zero mention of his ties to Vee in his review, gave it a suspicious 5 stars and could only provide the vaguest overview of the book - clearly he never read it, and Sixteenth, who manage them all, told everyone to run plant ads and reviews to drive up publicity for the book in a dishonest fashion. Jack happily agreed rather than show any scruples.

Like Ruby, he is the face of a shitty stationery company known for lazily-designed, high price, low quality, narrow selection products made by a company that is so poorly run that they frequently have massive delays, regular mass printing errors and major defects. He markets these to everyday students and encourages them to pay these higher prices for shitty tat, rather than tell them to pay less for better elsewhere. Again, his management team do the legwork for this and Jack happily agrees in exchange for money rather than show any backbone, integrity or work ethic to built a brand offering quality, affordable products.

His content for the past few years has been woefully repetitive, insanely lazy, and built on ideas almost entirely borrowed or outright stolen from other YouTubers. His whole "i review every book recommended by [insert celebrity here]"/"i read every book seen in [insert tv show here]" schtick was stolen from John Fish. John ran a video 2 years ago in which he read every book mentioned by the main character in the TV show 'You'. It got 3 million+ views. Even so, John didn't just remake this video 4,000 times and instead kept making relatively diverse and original videos afterwards. Jack, meanwhile, nabbed this idea a few months later and has spent the past year and a half running it into the ground. John also went to Harvard while Jack was rejected from Oxford multiple times. Unlucky.

Content creation is his full-time, lucratively-paid job and he has no original ideas or personality of his own, recycling other creators' ideas, rehashing outdated viral booktube trends, speaking entirely in influencer catchphrases an bad puns and getting paid off the backs of other people. Meanwhile, he created a separate channel for identical content for no other reason than he wanted additional YouTube Play Button trophies to feed his ego.

He's every bit as bad as his peers in most of the same ways.

So, I was just watching a random channel with this really nice American lad who reacts to different British things. He reacted to one of Jack's videos thinking it was how all uni students lived in the UK.

Saw he posted this 🤣

"i'll also be sharing my perspective of the industry as a debut novelist!"

But...you can't, because you aren't, Jack. The only fiction you've published is all the claims that you actually read books.

This egotistical dipshit hasn't written a single word yet and is already planning on spilling industry tea as a published author? The entitlement runs deep. What a fuckwit.

Am I meant to believe the exact day he reads the heartstopper books he magically gets invited to the premiere? I mean sure, he doesn't have much of a reason to lie about that but what a coincidence that just as he's making a video about reading the books, holding the book in his hands, he gets the invitation? On easter sunday nonetheless (not sure when agency people or whoever calls to tell him he's been invited work but I'd imagine it's not necessarily on easter sunday - at least for non-urgent matters?). Idk it's not a big deal but it sort of bugged me because I felt like he's being dishonest (or maybe it really was a coincidence, idk he might've just been reading them in anticipation for the show, wanting to make a video about it as the show is released, that'd make sense but it just felt like too much of a coincidence)
He's 100% lying.

I'd believe that he picked up the books because he was aware that the TV show was coming out, because it's firmly in Jack's wheelhouse to transparently leap onto a popularity bandwagon at the last minute for content, and a lot of booktubers were hyped for the show so he was probably aware that it was ripe for exploiting for likes.

But his story doesn't add up, and he lies about the vast majority of things. This is the Jack who pretended he'd accidentally stumbled into one of the filming locations for Emily in Paris when going for lunch, when he'd clearly Googled the location and sought it out. He pretended that he'd coincidentally bumped into old friend Jade and invited her to the Baftas with him and gushed about the "casual magic" kismet of it all, when it had all been planned days prior.

That pathetic "the universe is designed around me, look at all the casual magic coming my way!", "main character energy" fabricated bullshit to make themselves feel and look special is totally one of the tricks in his playbook.

He's one of Sixteenth's most followed "talents", compared to the very small audiences of the rest of their pool of creators. There's no way they weren't asking him to attend first and early. And this was the last of multiple Netflix promotional events that week that he attended. It's a big brand deal, and there's no way Sixteenth were leaving it until the last minute on an Easter Bank Holiday to invite their most-followed talents and risking them not being able to attend, especially since Jack is staying in Paris.

He also frames it like he read the books on the Sunday, then the next day he was at the premiere, when it was actually three days later and he had two other Netflix events prior. He very clearly wanted to create the impression that by simply reading the books, he'd conjured up the will of the universe and coincidentally he was at the premiere 24 hours later, which isn't what happened.

And he's raving about how much he loves Alice Oseman as an author and stans her for life, and that his entire fanbase have been supposedly crying out for him to read the series, but then says he has no clue what Heartstopper is about prior to reading it other than it's a romance. If you're gonna proclaim you're YouTube's resident librarian, you'd think you'd do a tiny amount of research or be aware of the general plot of a fan-favourite series.

I'd wager what actually happened is that he had no awareness of or interest in the books until a couple of weeks before the premiere, when his management said, "Hey, you're attending some Netflix premieres, one's for Heartstopper. At least pretend to read the books; you'll be expected to run ad content." He bought and read them with the awareness that the premiere was on the horizon and made up some nonsense to make himself seem special and the centre of the universe, when he's just a dishonest cog in a marketing machine.

It literally feels like this book has been happening for like two years now
I know books take time to write

but

For a book that supposedly going to be about productivity, the author fucking about for 2 years debating his life path and eventually quitting the thing that gave him legitimacy is very funny

Why do people like Jack find it such a novelty when working class people have to do work in their vicinity?

Such weird main character energy, as if these people are the support cast who are only there to irritate and/or humour the ‘star’ 🙄

Not to mention taking random photos of people just trying to do their job is so intrusive. Guessing he didn't get this person's permission to post this photo, even if they're technically in a public place.

Yep PDF here - I don’t know what uni student this would appeal to.
Thanks for sharing, I got as far as the dedication and dipped.

"This book is dedicated to my A Level Biology teacher, who told me it was ‘time to start aiming lower’ – I’m glad I didn’t."

Considering Jack aimed high with Oxford, failed miserably and had to settle for Durham Uni and spent every year since with a chip on his shoulder about it, it seems like his biology teacher was right on the money. This ain't exactly the mic drop you intended, Jack.

It always amazes me that these studytubers learned nothing from that experience. Instead of realising that toxic productivity, endless studying and rote memorisation techniques will leave you ill-equipped for actual academia, while rounded interests and independent thought is more likely to attract the attention of admissions, they just act like they were unfairly scorned by Oxford and bitterly carry that grudge for years.

When every major "young genius" studytuber failed to get into their uni of choice, it's very telling. And it should be a major red flag that these are not the people to be telling others the best ways to study in a book they charge money for.

Is this ‘fashion’ these days?! There’s no way I’d be attracted to my boyfriend if he dressed like this…
Honestly he is just a walking fashion disaster. It's like he has seen Harry Styles' outfits and tries to wear them all, all at once and looks even worse than Harry manages to.

In Jack's latest video, we see him unboxing a load of books from Harper Collins. That's right, not content with buying a load of books he is never going to read and filling up his pretend library trolley (so he can be the library trolley dolly) he went onto the Tweety Mail, showed a bit of leg, and begged any publishers out there to kindly send him the goods.

HARPER COLLINS PUBLISHED MY BOOK, Jack reminds us, which might explain why the publishing house has thrown him this bone. It's certainly not because they are in any need of Jack providing favourable reviews, as (a) he's incapable of finishing a book (b) the books in question issued way back in October.

Jack then goes onto read the blurbs. Which is all the reading he intends to do.

"Jonathan...Fran...Zen?" Jack says, getting a few of his pages stuck together. A Pulitzer prize finalist and winner of the National Book Award, Franzen is not on social media, so he is a non-person to Jack. He then reads the blurb, utterly disgusted at the news that Franzen is considered one of American's finest living writers.
"That's quite a claim!" Jack says, utterly oblivious to the irony he himself has made far more fantastical claims - not least that he is a librarian.

Meanwhile, President Macron has taken the decision to refuse Jacques entry to France. And quite right too. The country produces around 1,600 types of cheese . The last thing it needs is to import more.

I love this thread. I’m glad the things that annoy me about Jack annoy everyone else too. He only seems to do anything for the aesthetics and his super short comments on books are such a waste of time. What is the point of rushing through 160 books a year for your booktube channel if you’re going to have literally nothing to say about them? If he doesn’t really read them, it explains a lot.
And when he speaks about the same book multiple times in different places, his comments are identical. The guy can't even be bothered to come up with something vaguely new to say about books he supposedly invested 300+ pages of time into beyond a super-vague, definitely-never-read-it pull-quote.

Jack's cover quote for Empowered: "A touching, deeply inspiring, and thought-provoking book written by a trailblazer and a powerhouse."

Jack's Goodreads review of Empowered: "A touching, deeply inspiring, and thought-provoking book written by a trailblazer and a powerhouse."

Jack's 2021 book recap comments on Empowered: "This is Vee's deeply inspiring, and thought-provoking memoir meets self-help book. It gave me goosebumps, it's so vulnerable and she is just powerhouse. And a trailblazer."

Jack pretending he and Jacob Elordi are best buds, when Jack's just out here trawling Buzzfeed interviews with actors for book recommendations or just sees them holding a book in paparazzi pictures.

allyvee and Uncarley also do that gimmick
I'm pretty sure he just straight up stole that idea from uncarley and cari can read because he saw them being successful with this format. Now with Youtube it's hard to say who exactly came up with a specific idea, but let's look at the facts.

Nov 20, 2020 - uncarley's first video, she reads Harry Styles' favourite books
Dec 28, 2020 - Jack reads Harry Styles' favourite books (his first 'celebrity book club' video)

Aug 2020 - cari can read reads books recommended by BTS' Namjoon
Feb 2021 - Jack reads Namjoon's book recommendations (his second 'celebrity book club' video)

March 31, 2021 - uncarley reads Taylor Swift's favourite books
April 10, 2021 - Jack reads Taylor Swift's favourite books (his third 'celebrity book club' video)

There's more overlap between the celebrities Jack and Carley have made videos on, and they collaborated on a Lorde reading challenge, but this one still stood out to me:

Feb 2021 - uncarley reads Camille Rowe's favourite books
Feb 2021 - uncarley reads Kaia Gerber's favourite books
Oct 2021 - Jack reads book recommendations by supermodels, inter alia, you guessed it, Camille Rowe and Kaia Gerber

Literally the 'copy my homework but don't make it obvious meme'. Hell, Jack even has a playlist on his channel called celebrity book club which is the name of Carley's series!

I won't subject myself to listen to Jack talk, so idk if he credits Cari and Carley. He didn't link their videos in the infobox, so I guess not. Obviously content creators hop on trends all the time but I think it's very telling of Jack's character that as a male with a huge platform (his sub count was 239k at the time of the Harry Styles video) he took video ideas from much smaller female content creators without even giving credit.

Also funny little detail, Carley usually reads three books per celebrity, while Jack claims to read every book said celebrity has recommended. Classic.
