Aldi have lots of Harry Potter special buys this week
Absolutely unbelievable. I'd love to know what most people would make of that given the average person on the street is probably totally unaware of the twitter based lunacy and won't have any idea that JK Rowling has committed all of these grievous crimes against the trans community.
I disagree. Twitter is not irrelevant at all, although it should be. It actively shapes media, law and politics in a way Facebook doesn’t, and never has.Twitter is irrelevant, it's mostly used by people looking at cute animal pics. Comments are made by a tiny, yet vocal, number of people. In SM I think of Twitter being at one end of the politics scale and the DM comments section at the other. 99% of people are in-between.
If you asked the average person 'why is J K Rowling cancelled?' those that know what the phrase means would mostly say 'she isn't'. A few would reply that 'people on Twitter don't like her'.
JK goes from strength to strength - Harry Potter World in the Universal Parks is just massive and so popular, as are all the books and films still. Its all about book sales and those continue to rise.......yet another fact that can't be denied.
Perhaps I should say 'irrelevant to me, my friends, family and co-workers'.I disagree. Twitter is not irrelevant at all, although it should be. It actively shapes media, law and politics in a way Facebook doesn’t, and never has.
Media - Broadsheets, television programmes, magazines etc have ran entire pieces, debates and interviews on the fact that JK Rowling IS transphobic. Not questioning but stating that she simply is. Because people on Twitter said so. The BBC has been hit by (I think I read) 14,000 complaints because people on Twitter have been saying it’s a transphobic institution. This is not the work of Facebook, Insta, or Tik Tok or anything else. It’s Twitter. These are only two examples, not even getting into “Twitter storms” and cancellationsPerhaps I should say 'irrelevant to me, my friends, family and co-workers'.
Genuinely curious - can you please give me examples of how Twitter has shaped media, law and politics?
Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.Media - Broadsheets, television programmes, magazines etc have ran entire pieces, debates and interviews on the fact that JK Rowling IS transphobic. Law/Politics (they go together) - Donald Trump’s Twitter account is widely and notably credited for starting the riots in America. Laws are amended and shaped by “public opinion”, such as changes to Self-ID, as one example. Politicians aren’t looking to Facebook. They’re not looking to Instagram. They’re looking to Twitter. The majority of policitians in this country has a Twitter account. I bet half, or even a quarter, has any other (public) socials. They use Twitter to poll, and to engage, with “the public”, whilst forgetting it’s a completely anonymous platform, where users may not even be from their country. (I can’t remember if it was this thread or a different one about the person asking if they actually had to read the BBC article before submitting a complaint about it). I also think that’s why a “record” number of complaints were made against Ashley Banjo and Diversity BLM performance, I doubt half of the people were even from the UK. And yes, people from elsewhere other than the UK can be offended by something they’ve seen on the global internet, but Ofcom, in my opinion, should NOT be taking global complaints about British television.
It’s tribalistic in the way other social media giants aren’t. Maybe it’s the limited characters, I don’t know, but it’s influence is unparalleled.
Oh, absolutely I agree with you on that. I think the media, and politicians, quite forget that it is a very, very small amount of the general populace that actually has a Twitter account or even visits the website. Which is probably why most people have no clue about the JKR thing. Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.
I take you point, although I do think that Twitter is just one of multiple platforms/sources used.
If I remember rightly Twitter predicted a Hilary Clinton win and the UK to stay in Europe.
I still maintain that JK being cancelled on Twitter means nothing to the vast majority of people in the World, or the 100's if not 1000's of firms that endorse Harry Potter in some way. The Hallowean 20 years of Harry Potter screening at our local cinema sold out within minutes.
Plus a landslide Jeremy Corbyn win, you'd think people would wake up to how irrelevant twitter actually is in the real world where people stil communicate face to face. Thanks for taking the trouble to respond.

I just immediately think sexual deviant when they have an anime profile pictureThe tendency towards anime profile pics is very telling, isn’t it? An unequivocal acknowledgement that the image of themselves they hold in their head bears no relation to reality.
It’s almost as if identifying as a coquettish, doe-eyed teen princess when you’re 6’, middle-aged, and have XY chromosomes is something that can only be conveyed via a cartoon caricature.

I used to watch him too (mostly years ago) but he makes me wanna puke recently, such a smug woke hipster.I had my twitter account locked for saying Rachel Levine is male. The platform prides themselves on fact checking but saying trans women are male is considered hateful conduct. It’s an absolute farce.
@HockyRorror, check this out. Absolutely pisses me off. I used to like his channel but I’ve gone right off. Makes me sick when men speak for JKR, wagging their finger at us for not being nice enough to pornsick males.
I have no idea who that is, but he is delusional if he is not only speaking on behalf ofJKR but a cartoon character that isn’t even a real person wtf!?I had my twitter account locked for saying Rachel Levine is male.
