How Much Do You Earn? #2

The thing about earning over £100k (don't get me wrong I'd love to earn that) is that your expenses/ lifestyle tend to increase to match so you probably don't feel much better off.

So I know someone whose household income (both work FT, no kids) is about £200-250k. Yes they have a million pound house (although as it's in London it's an ordinaryish 3 bed albeit in a lovely area), but they also spend £££s on clothes (no Primark or Asda for them, and they work in the City so it's all formal wear suits most of the time). Nights out are all overpriced London bars rather than steak and a wine in the Wetherspoons (which does me fine!) and they won't go on a holiday unless it's a 5 star resort.

I do know someone else who earned huge amounts as a City trader in the 90s (I'm guessing the equivalent of £200k a year or more), and retired 20 years ago (aged 40) on a massive pension. Hasn't worked since!
I'm a bit jealous he could retire at 40, but fair play! I respect people who retire when they can afford to, rather than working for years and years to get money that they don't need. Though obviously it's everyone's choice.

I've got no children and don't want any and earn a decent salary. I'm putting aside plenty into my pension with a view to retiring around age 55. After losing several family members I've been reminded life's too short so I'd rather enjoy it as much as I can, as soon as my finances allow.

This thread makes me realise how badly I get paid. £10 an hour WFH admin for a small company. I don’t get holiday/sickness/pension as I am classed as self employed. I work my butt off and even though I’m not officially a supervisor or manager I do have to boss other staff around. I’m nearly 35 and feel like a complete failure at life 😔
You're not a failure! Sounds to me like you work hard in a professional job. You've got, and are gaining, skills and you can take those to another workplace/job should you choose to.

I know it's not easy but do try not to compare yourselves with others too much. There will always be people who are wealthier, but it doesn't mean they're a better person or lead an amazing life. A lot of it is skin deep.

Parents have the ability to teach this too 😀

I mean not necessarily, immigrant parents who don't know their new country's economical landscape, and parents who are familiar with one industry but not how others work, abusive parents in any form. I mean depending on your social economic level or situation you can't really know what you don't know. @Rxt156

Around 1.2 million a year.
😏

Unfortunately not in British pounds though so far less impressive than it sounds!

27k a year as a full time allied health professional... Doesn't seem much when you think of the massive caseload and responsibilities! But I do enjoy my job.

I totally agree with you! My own parents simply told me to work hard at school, pass my exams, go to uni. My dad was a painter and decorator and my mum was a part time cleaner so its not like they had the knowledge.

Don’t feel like that at all. If you are really unhappy and other salaries are higher for the same job it’s definitely worth seeing what’s out there!

Niceeeee! What do you do? Feel free to be general or not to answer at all 😅

I’d say you’ve done very well to end up as a social worker. It’s never easy to earn a decent wage

I am very proud of the fact i am a social worker and the positive work i do. However the money is not great; especially for the responsibilities i have. I personally think im worth more than my salary- as are all the other social workers, nurses, teachers etc. But generally people dont go into these professions for the money. I even have a mug that says "Social Worker: In it for the outcome not the income".
I could always have a career change, and its my dream to go on and do my Phd and i would love to work in a University but thats for the future.

Thank you. I don’t know how to DM on here?
sorry, it seems like Tattle got rid of that feature.
I listed them on bio. https://tattle.life/members/tabitha.46456/#about

Community manager and social media specialists pay better. If jobs aren’t open some have speculative applications. Experience doesn’t matter.

Please let me know if you’ve seen it so I can delete it. I’m not affiliated with any of these companies, I just know them from being in the industry. They are good stepping stones if you want to get into marketing or social also.

Thank you so much. I’ve screenshot them and I’ll have a look at them all. I really appreciate it x

If you have a degree from a top university I promise it isn’t A waste, it will eventually pay dividends.

For what it’s worth, people (when I was younger) generally only selected to study something they were really interested in, as that was considered the point of university- to further you education and deepen your knowledge. It wasn’t simply to get a better paying job.

different times I’m sure but I’m glad you studied something you enjoyed.

I wouldn't feel too badly about this, this is how many of us are taught to choose our degree and tbh depending on the subject it makes sense. My first degree had so much studying but very little teaching time so without being super enthused about my subject I'd never have been able to get through it.

I doubt your degree is useless, they all teach transferable skills!

Please dont think that. Its amazing you went and got a first! That is something to be really proud of.

For what it is worth, i did my BA in History combined with Criminology and when i graduated i ended up back in my hometown and signed on at the job centre!

This is what really scares me. I’m about to go to £65k and my husband is hopefully going to hit £80k next year, and we have one child. I want to live well and save well, and I feel almost overwhelmed by the responsibility of this kind of income.

Do ever get a shock at what some make. We recently had someone come and tidy our garden, fix things and he worked non stop all day and transformed the place and used all his own tools and only charged £80.

Not enough is how much i earn!!!

I work for voluntary organisation in a senior role. Because of funding issues, myself and the next person senior to me didn't get pay rises in quite a few years. At the time it didn't bother me, was better to have a full time job etc.

But - 2 things have rankled me. I recently found a spreadsheet showing the wages from 2014. The wages of myself and the next senior have risen £120 in 8yrs. People on NMW, their wages have risen £220.

So our differencia has been eroded. Now that's bad enough, but the organisation is talking about reducing staff hours. If I'd got pay rises in line with NMW, it would impact as bad. But I didn't. So it will.

£40K and I’m so so so grateful and also proud of myself for getting to this point as I’ve worked my absolute ass off!

I was earning half that 5 years ago…. And even less if I look back further.
