Aside from the hilarity of the phrasing, it seems like word choices were made to avoid plagiarizing the original text. My point is that it happens. Even in families parents and siblings are often unaware of things going on in someone's life. We see it all the time re murdered kids in inner cities. People can hide 'other lives' in full view.
