yeah exactly, sexual assault is not about just sex... I remember being at uni and (female) friends of mine saying they understood how men grape women if they had been flirting with them and "leading them on"

this is exactly why I agree with positive discrimination - being the only woman in a work context like this just means awful thigns like this are able to happen
I hope "they understood" is like how you can understand the mecanics/psychology of it, but not defending empathisizing with them

I wonder is it a case of them feeling they have to adapt to make it in a 'man's world' or something. So sad
yeah I would imagine the same, it is so sad, even for myself when I hear men make ridiculous sexist comments at work (my workplace is probably about 50/50 ) but I cannot cope with arguing/trying ot counter them as it just seems pointless

I mean I think either way it is ridiculous, but yes some of them really did empathise. And then it would always move on to "women lying about being grape" etc etc... so, draw your own conclusions

The French way is to bully them back/take them down a peg, this goes for any non-pc jokes/comments. I've found that arguing/convincing them how it's offensive is pointless. I've felt more respected that way, which is weird.

Sounds odd doesn't it? but I've reflected on this and I'd compare it to showing who's the top dog, not being an inferior pray. Also much more satisfying and less taxing if you ask me. Also it's not exactly being mean, but using their own tactics back at them.

In Ireland during a well known grape case the victims knickers were held up in court as 'proof' that the victim was sexually open

There was a case a while ago where a young girl was grape and because she wore a frilly thong the (middle aged male) judge gave the perpetrator a lighter sentence because her underwear was so suggestive.

It's how I feel about the trans issue- being nice never got us anywhere. So that's why I push back at every opportunity

this is just wrong on SO many levels.... so.... he took off her clothes, presumably without her consent, and then this was "suggestive". I think I need ot stop reading this thread, I can feel my blood pressure going up!

yeh I agree, the problem is it is almost like a learned behaviour for us to go against , but I will try!
it's the "be kind" learned behaviour. Try it out online and see how it feels first if you want.

Only just found out that the singer/actress Charice (who was on Glee) is now a transman and has changed her name to Jake Zyrus. I'm sure this has nothing to do with her being a les from a conservative, homophobic society (she is Filipina) nor how she was reported to have been made to have Botox when she was just 18 if she wanted to keep her role on the show ...

Also: lumping in trans men (he/ him) in with male violence?! When has a trans men ever been known to carry out an attack? We could be here all day discussing trans women who've attacked women
I do know someone who was genuinely attacked by two young transmen in a racist assault. This must be pretty rare though and may have had more to do with circumstances - the victim is of Middle Eastern descent and lived in a tough, predominantly white area where violence isn't rare. And (sighs) he posted a lot on his social media, and still posts, about "toxic masculinity" and "racist white men" in relation to this assault, just to show how not-transphobic he is. Mate. They were racist women and you were just unlucky.

jess phillips getting told off by the TRA for not mentioning any trans women who have been killed on her list despite the fact the list is noting women killed in the last year and there have been no trans women killed in the last year.

I just don't really understand why they want to be mentioned in the context. My guess is that trans women who are killed are killed by people who hate the fact that they're trans rather than because they're an 'easy' victim. The situation is just so different.

I could see them being thrown in with hate crime statistics as that what crimes against them basically are.

Biological women can be the victim of hate crimes too

I do agree that things should be kept separate though especially as they keep pushing the narrative that trans women are far more at risk

I can’t believe I’m defending Owen Jones but Churchill was responsible for the death of millions in Bengal. (Bengal Famine/Bengal Holocaust).

For a number of people it’s not that they don’t like “facts” it’s that they have been taught a narrative of idolatry of Churchill as a saviour, and not the less savoury parts of his history. Although for some people, they know full well about what Churchill got up to (Gallipoli anyone?) and still don’t want to confront that he was not a perfect being. Churchill is a good example of how we need to more closely examine our own history and colonial past and what we are teaching/taking away from it.

Owen Jones is a snivelling, self serving misogynist who sold his soul for a Guardian column.
Oh I don't disagree. Churchill wasn't a saint and knew what was happening with the concentration camps . Remember the boats of Jewish kids and families not allowed to dock on UK soil.
Churchill, like everyone is fallible. I for one feel no connection with him and don't feel he was particularly moral or I'd feel comfortable holding him in high esteem. It was Owen Jones given a fact yet denying biological facts that gets me furious

I understand trans women undergo their own struggles from men and I feel for them and I would support them but why are they so determined to hijack everything ? Before their transition they were exactly the demographic we are talking about so why not just sit this one out and let women who were born women have their say

Gandhi was also someone I'd avoid putting on a pedestal. Horrible little man who abused his wife.
