A friend of mine (who supported me through my grape) is a small-scale influencer and posted some talking stories on IG about Sarah, women and how common assault was etc. I was nodding along, and then her closing statement was "but of course as cisgender women we have no idea what trans women are going through. They are in more danger than we are and we must protect them". I'm bleeping astounded. Someone I've had respect for for years and she's fallen into this. How can anyone with half a brain cell believe trans women are such high risk when all the statistics demonstrates they are not. I'm so disappointed.

I'm frustrated and I don't know what we can do. We are being silenced and simply quoting statistics is now deemed bigotry.
ugh this is ridiculous, what is the point of this? she may as well say "don't worry, it could be worse" (my most hated phrase in the english languag)

And cisgender, what a clown.

Also, who are trans women supposedly in danger from? Again, it boils down to this: it is not up to women to stop male violence.

You should send her this thread

I really don't get why transwomen even have to be brought into this. I'm sorry but the idea that we can't tell is nuts. How come there are never stories in the news that transwomen have been kidnapped, grape or killed in England? Men can bloody well tell.
I'm so angry that Ash Sakar (I think it was) was saying it's worse for transwomen because of some kind of double jeopardy - being both trans and women, they face transphobia and misogyny and the violence that supposedly stems from both. But I thought transwomen ARE women? So how can they face both? If they ARE women it's surely just misogyny? Obviously I don't agree, but even applying a very basic logical scrutiny, it doesn't hold up.
Not to mention Sarah wasn't a transwoman so I'm sorry, but I really don't see how it has anything at all to do with them.
We already have to worry now about policemen - I think someone was saying on a thread on here about how many of us would submit to policemen without a second thought. Are we really now in the position that we have to consider, if we are arrested, whether we are more prepared to risk our lives or the risk of the consequences from resisting arrest if it is genuine. How do we tell? This is certainly something I will worry about going forward.
So, if anything it is totally incoherent to be told 'transwomen matter here too'. Yep, they matter because from the same mouths telling us we need to care more about being diligent about our safety and women's safety matters, comes a spew of insane nonsense about accepting men into our spaces. If a girl walking home can be abducted in a public space, why on EARTH is it so incomprehensible to them that we don't want to share private spaces with men? I don't care how they 'feel' in their head. They are male bodied. Surely that is the be all and end all?

Imagine the roles were reversed- a trans women was murdered and then women inserted themselves into the conversation. They would go absolutely nuts

exactly, this is just a (much) worse version of trans women inserting themselves into IWD, imagine women did the same for trans/non binary day?

I really wonder what is going ot happen with this whole trans issue, at some point there has to be some kind of backlash that a tiny minority is dictating huge social issues/conversations, surely?

Some days I think that the peak will happen soon but other days it's just relentless. I've truly never seen anything like it

I'm so grateful for here and GC twitter because I'd be losing my mind otherwise

yeah really, I am fearful it won;t be until the young generation growing up now regret transitioning, so a decade at least into the future, by which time women will have lost so many of our hard won rights

This makes me feel sick

Also: lumping in trans men (he/ him) in with male violence?! When has a trans men ever been known to carry out an attack? We could be here all day discussing trans women who've attacked women

I just don;t understand this at all - women "doing what they should" not to be attacked i.e. wearing trainers etc, if you could avoid being attacked by not dressing as a woman (if you aren't one) why wouldn;t you?

It was suggested on this thread that women can walk down the street wearing jeans and be left alone- total bull not to mention the strong 'she was asking for it' vibes

there was a case a while ago in Italy where a woman was grape by a stranger - the defence from the man's lawyers hinged on the fact she was wearing jeans and she would have had to choose to take them off... there is literally nothing we can do to avoid blame

In Ireland during a well known grape case the victims knickers were held up in court as 'proof' that the victim was sexually open

I honestly don't know how female lawyers would deal with having to work on a case like this... I would not be able to stay calm

In this case it was male lawyers.

Another point I just thought of- sexual violence is not about sex or what a woman is wearing. It is about controlling and exerting power over the victim. This is why I can't stand the 'asking for it' mentality

There's a few books on sexism in law, and while it's probably gotten a bit better over the years it's still a very male-dominated field it seems. I remember my teacher told us that her friend (who is a barrister) was presenting a case when she dropped something and the male barrister made a sexist comment on something, everyone laughed and that was that.

You would be surprised at how openly misogynistic some female lawyers are. Often these ones are actually worse than the men, it is shocking.

yeah exactly, sexual assault is not about just sex... I remember being at uni and (female) friends of mine saying they understood how men grape women if they had been flirting with them and "leading them on"

this is exactly why I agree with positive discrimination - being the only woman in a work context like this just means awful thigns like this are able to happen

People are so scared about not being seen as inclusive it seems it is now the trend to add a second tweet to make a disclaimer  so many are doing this now.

Seeing how desperate the trans community are to be recognised as male/female you'd think they'd be perfectly okay with being thrown into even the negative conversations concerning their genders.
I'm sure many men recognise that when we talk about men being dangerous we don't mean all of them and we don't specify it, but you must specify you don't mean trans men

I wonder is it a case of them feeling they have to adapt to make it in a 'man's world' or something. So sad
