It was quite something to see a whole documentary explaining how transitioning can easily happen due to social pressures, influence from others, the contagion of thinking, gender stereotypes, internalised misogyny and homophobia… and then say “of course, this isn’t how it happens outside cults at all…!” The expert they chose was clearly an attempt to say this was definitely the wrong type of transitioning… but the show showed very easily how those women with fragile self-image and self-worth could easily be pushed into this by others.

There is one on Netflix and one on Amazon Prime Video, both have “Twin Flames” in the title and both cover the compelled / very much encouraged transitioning aspect. The Netflix one is the one mentioned by the poster above which includes the TIF professor and the strong attempt to say transitioning isn’t really like this…

But LGB orientations have only ever been relevant in the workplace because LGB people would actually be sacked if they were found out to be LGB, and there was campaigning to make such discrimination illegal.

To be honest, a lot of Netflix documentaries fall short on the critical thinking side of things - preferring to just retell a subject over one too many episodes - so not entirely surprised they didn’t join the dots about susceptible young women, unhealthy influences and gender ideology in a coherent way.
It was bizarre to wheel out Cassius/the twee little sentences at the end. It had no relevance to the documentary really. I suppose it speaks to the fear the media has of saying anything that could potentially be considered as ‘anti-trans’.
It was deeply disturbing to watch how these women were manipulated - I don’t think people realise sometimes how easy the internet has made it. Cults aren’t a commune on an abandoned bit of land, they’re zoom meetings and Facebook groups, text messages and chats. Whether or not trans ideology is a cult is probably more of a distracting question than a useful one, but many who buy into it certainly use the techniques of cults - manipulation, coercion, and isolation.
I’m not sure if that sounds all a bit pearl clutchy, but I think when people - especially those who have low self esteem - find a place of sanctuary online, sometimes it’s all too easy to get sucked into something that ends up rather extreme.
