I agree with you. We are deeply failing children that instead of seeing safeguarding red flags like PP mentioned about signs of particular types of porn that Brianna was possibly exposed to at a young age, people just turn a blind eye and describe the behaviour and appearance as stunning, beautiful and brave. They are not concerned with the actual root cause of the distressed child.
‘Transitioning’ doesn’t appear to resolve the mental health issues. The focus of the continued mental health issues just turn to being blamed on transphobia / GC women. I’ve probably oversimplified that though.
Anyway it took less than two days for the trial thread to descend into gender identity politics chaos. So hard not to respond but it isn’t the place because at the heart of this is a 16 year old child who did not deserve to die, and in such a brutal way.
Social media, and 24/7 internet-accessible smartphones have really ducked us up as a species in such a short space of time, and I don’t mean just regarding the trans contagion issue

I can't stay long on the Brianna trial thread, and I'm not particularly enamoured of the press reporting of this trial either. A young man (a confused, possibly mentally unwell, probably gay, young man) has been murdered, and him wearing a dress and using a female name doesn't change the fact that he was a boy.
Every single news report states that he was a "teenage girl".....no, he wasn't. His parents have lost their son (more than once), but will he ever be acknowledged in the reports? I really feel for his mother, she's been gaslit into mourning for a daughter, will anyone recognise her actual loss?

It's honestly abysmal that people are more concerned with making a young teenager a trans martyr so that they can finally say someone has died from transphobic attacks in this country, than they are about the fact some other teenagers are so deeply disturbed to have not only made a list of peers to kill, but actually carried out the attack.

Anyway, I agree 100%. The whitewashing (transwashing?) of the reporting here gives me a visceral reaction. I feel so uncomfortable about it. Because it feels false - it IS false.
The fact he was a screwed up, mentally unwell boy, with an obvious eating disorder, crying out for attention (possibly even help at times) on multiple social media accounts is SO relevant to the story. And absolutely at the core of his trans identity!

His name is Brett Spooner. I don’t know why the surname changed, is the mum’s surname Ghey? Would this also most likely just be a social name change or could the parents have legally changed it? I’ve seen the judge has been criticised for using the name Brett in court when the history was explained to the jury. And the press criticised for repeating it. Again they tie themselves in knots insisting we don’t mention anything pre-transition, but we acknowledge this person is trans even though trans girls are female. So we must pretend they are the same as biological girls even though they are different, stunning, brave, but what makes them different must never be mentioned

It sounds as if his name hadn’t been changed officially since he was still a child, so the judge (being bound by tradition and common sense rules as they are) is using his legal name. That’s all

The whole ‘deadnaming’ thing is bonkers to me. How can you wipe out your whole life like that and expect everyone else to as well? As a mum I find it so upsetting to think of being told I could never call my child the name I gave him ever again and have been saying for 11 years. Thankfully I’m not in that position but lots of other parents are. I don’t want to say too much on the Brianna story as I find it very upsetting, but just thinking about his poor mum it’s just awful the whole thing.

“Women should feel safe to walk the streets without fear of attack. The CPS remain committed to prosecuting sexual offenders.”
And yet all he received was a 20 month suspended sentence. How does that equate to women feeling safe to walk the streets without fear of attack? Nothing has changed except for a measly slap on the wrist. There were multiple victims, so every reason to suspect he will re-offend. He was cleared of 10 counts of indecent exposure because he exposed prosthetic genitals rather than his own
