Thank you for the thoughtful reply, and rest assured that the tone of my response was only responding in kind to your own and not meant as an attack on you either. I am here yes, to gossip, but also to debate freely one of the few places that allows it, and to listen to people I don’t always agree with.

Please believe me that I mean absolutely no ill-will to anyone living as they please, far from it. I believe very fiercely that anyone can dress, act, present, call themselves whatever they want. I’m all for it. They can live and love as they wish and I’m extremely proud to live in a country that allows this. I would strongly stand up for anyone who was attacked for being “different.”

My minor griping about Mae not rushing to clear up any confusion Mae isn’t actually a les aside, my issue with isn’t with any individual person so much as the idea that we all have to adopt an ideology that I and others personally do not agree with, in order to refer to others. In pretty much no other field I am required to actively agree with another person’s subjective view of themselves, and the world, if I don’t want to. Mae is perfectly within her rights to consider herself not female if that’s important to her, but I don’t have to do this. I wouldn’t go and yell in Mae’s face about that, but I would discuss it in this forum.

If it was just using the right pronoun, that would be one ask. But pronouns are part of a bigger system. “It’s just asking to be called X or Y, what is the problem?” The problem is this can be just the first step. It then becomes a request (framed as a demand) that we observe more than just politeness, and so observe a person’s identity in law, in sports, in male / female spaces, and begin to promote the idea to children that we all have a “gender identity” (this is no more true than we all have a religion).

To be clear, anyone is free to believe what they want, do what they want, believe what they want about themselves — simply not to impose it on me. And when it has practical, real-world impact, some of us will ask questions. I’m allowed to ask whether, for example, recommending to others microdosing with testosterone (as Mae has done) is a good thing to do. I’m also allowed to wonder if the recent promotion of elective top surgery / double mastectomy is really that empowering. If this is seen as negativity… well, I won’t single Mae out again I don’t think but simply I don’t think children and young women need to get these messages all the time that feeling different means medical intervention. If “non-binary” as an identity was just a pronouns request, I would find it daft but I wouldn’t feel so strongly that it’s actually a little dangerous. It’s not just a pronouns request.
That's interesting. I see it as a request that I respectfully adhere to because why not. Why do you think it's dangerous?

I definitely think, because I love Mae, I lept to their defence. I have friends who are non-binary, les, gay...I think live and let live and that if everyone adopted that philosophy the world would be better.

The world is obviously crappy and dark right now and kindness is so important. I love that you said you'd stand up for anyone who was being attacked for being different.

On a fundamental level it's weird to me that we have these strict binaries - male or female. I've often wondered, and will probably get laughed at for this, why when we're born we can't be non-binary (sorry to use this label again but for lack of a better word) and then decide to be who we want to be without fear of judgement. Maybe I'm being a bit silly. Don't get me wrong I have a child and she is the sex that she is biologically. But if she came to me when old enough to make an informed decision and told me she was something else I'd fully support her.

I guess gender, sexuality, science, morals....they're all interesting topics and can be contentious when overlapped. Do you think this thread is more of a 'Woman's rights' thread rather than a gender thread or is it aptly named as 'Gender thread'? I just wonder because you are all fiercely championing women and our rights (I respect that) and while you believe gender to be an important part of the discussion there are so many parts to it?

Sorry for waffling just brain dumping into the thread!

Sex is binary - male or female - and is immutable. Gender is a state of mind which we express as 'personality' - so we are all non-binary at some point and our personalities develop and we become more masculine/more feminine, androygynous, depending on the nature/nurture element of our upbringing.

Sex = male/female, binary, unchangeable
Gender = masculine/feminine, fluid, the ideas and stereotypes associated with it vary according to culture and over time

I think maybe you’re confusing the 2? We can’t decide if we want to be male or female any more than we can decide our race or our eye colour, it’s a simple fact of our DNA. We can decide our interests and our lifestyles and what we wear and what haircut we have but none of these have anything to do with our sex.

Genuinely curious as to why you're purposefully misgendering Mae? Their pronouns are they/them. It's basic respect.

You say that they: "occupies cultural space / space in the perception of others as a les without being one (which annoys me)". Firstly, their sexuality has nothing to do with you. Secondly, Mae has no control over how others perceived them, nor should they care. Maybe get annoyed about things that actually concern you?
I am not sure you're on the right thread if this is your belief, this is a gender critical thread. Nobody is forced to use any pronouns for anyone else.

Didn't catch up on later posts before replying but think searching for anyone you like on here is a fast track to not liking them any more as tattle definitely looks behind the curtain and it's not always pretty! I like Mae Martin, and personally I don't have an issue using they/them pronouns as they are grammatically correct, if a bit weird. I won't, however, use the opposite gender pronouns. So I wouldn't call Elliot Page he, or 'Suzy Izzard' she. I think I may be in the minority in here with using the neutral language but that is where I feel comfortable drawing the line

No worries. It was for Skippy and anyone else who's interested in thoughtful discussion.

I think you are where I was with this - two years ago. And maybe I would be happier just live and let living - but I have seen this ideology spread into my workplace and my kids schools, and it is teaching kids to accept lies rather than the evidence of their eyes that there are boys and girls. This has nothing to do with interests, this has come up as part of safeguarding. If you are interested, we have a lot of evidence on this thread as to why we oppose trans ideology and gender identity overruling biology.

In terms of why acceding to the “soft” demands of gender identity like agreeing to “they/them” are dangerous, the thing is that it goes hand in hand with a much bigger picture. For example, with taking testosterone. We are a few years away from observing in more detail the long-term consequences of more women taking hormonal drugs that aren’t designed for their body. We do know however from the small amount of evidence we have so far that testosterone can cause cancers and heart attacks in women who take it long-term. By the way, I also note things like the contraceptive pill are often not good long-term, but that doesn’t decrease testosterone’s risks.

We also know there are other symptoms, Buck Angel talks a lot about this and about how taking the drug long-term isn’t some innocent “be free”, “be yourself” but an extremely serious medical decision doesn’t go hand in hand with “I feel a bit less than 100% female today.”

Pronouns also basically lead to men in women’s prisons. If you observe the pronoun, you think a male can be female, you think they should be treated as female for all purposes, that’s women who have no choice who are then locked up with males. Yes I know women can be violent, including sexually violent too. It is a “basic respect” point if you will, not to have women imprisoned alongside men.

Is the prison an extreme example? Yes of course; but it’s already happened. So hardly far-fetched. Of course, when the Gender Recognition Act came in, one lawmaker posited the idea that a male sex offender could claim to be female to move to a women’s prison as why legal changes to sex documents weren’t an easy slam dunk “be kind” decision. That was never going to happen!! it was said. And twenty years later yes, we have seen it happen.

If you don’t want to read all that on the dangers, two words: Jazz Jennings. Calling a person “they” directly leads to children being pushed into life choices they cannot reverse and understand BECAUSE they see different. That is not respecting difference, quite the opposite.

I genuinely think it would be worth your time following this thread for a bit and reading past threads. If you decide it's not for you fair enough but you might be surprised to find that most posters here (well me anyway) were very much of the it does no harm so why have an issue with it mindset until we realised the harm that is actually coming from this movement, especially to our children.

I don't want to preach to you, I don't think preaching does anyone any good except make the preacher feel better about themselves tbh 🤣 but I do think you'll get a lot out of it if you do read, even if it doesn't change your mind!

I think it's useful to step back and question why we have sex based segregation for sports, prisons, changing areas, many services, competitions and so on in the first place:

Men are stronger
Men are faster
Men are more violent
Men can grape
Men benefit from a patriarchal society

Totally agree. I'm vegan (outing myself as vegan and a virtue signaller?! Just begging for abuse :ROFLMAO:) and it's those vegans who go off on one and are rude and on their high horse that give veganism a bad name.

I do appreciate when people take the time to engage respectfully. When people are rude and judgemental it's never going to change opinions.

I can already see that there are some thoughtful, intelligent people on this thread. And unfortunately some rude, stubborn ones. The nature of Tattle.

I didn't know what I was letting myself in for when I first posted here but it's definitely been interesting.

Whenever I hear the term "non-binary" it reminds me of my school days and math classes! As for those who apply the term to themselves...nope, no recognition for such nonsense from me.
Lol...I'm the same with the term "organic". I'm always ranting about supermarket produce displays....all fruit and veg is organic!! 🥴😂

You might find this from a few years ago helpful in understanding the reticence of some to use preferred pronouns.

Hi people. Me again!

I've been reading through the most liked posts here to get more of a sense of people's thoughts and feelings.

I hope you don't mind but I have a few questions (at the risk of sounding naive).

What is a TIM?

Also, is the term TERF offensive to people who have gender critical beliefs? Or does it depend on the individual?

OK, finally, would anyone here describe themselves as transphobic? Or is that a big leap to make from being gender critical.

Thanks to anyone who answers!
