Archived Petition: Update the Equality Act to make clear the characteristic “sex” is biological sex
The Government must exercise its power under s.23 of the Gender Recognition Act to modify the operation of the Equality Act 2010 by specifying the terms sex, male, female, man & woman, in the operation of that law, mean biological sex and not "sex as modified by a Gender Recognition Certificate"
Back then, sketches like this were poking fun at feminists and their supposed demands for terms such as "chairman", to be replaced with non-sexist titles, there was quite a large backlash against the term "Ms", and the general feeling was, as always, that "strong" women were a bit of a nusiance, with their unreasonable complaints against the everyday sexism that was so entrenched in our lives. This was the era of Page 3, of scantily-clad gameshow hostesses, of "Carry On" films, (thankfully it was also the era of Siouxie Sioux and Poly Styrene, to show us that women didn't need to get their t**s out in order to be heard)

I was just starting at secondary school when this sketch went on air. Luckily, I was able to attend an all-girls school, where our teachers told us that we could do whatever we wanted for a living, that we should always have our own bank account and keep our own money, that we didn't have to marry and have babies if we chose not to, that we were equal to men.
Now, here we are, almost 50 years later, where International Women's Day is celebrated on behalf of men in lipstick, where a female author
has had to set up a private grape crisis centre so that she can legally keep men away from traumatised women, where the NHS has to be petitioned in order to get the word "Woman" used on a cervical cancer information leaflet, where men are being applauded for beating women in sporting events. How's that for progress?
IWD this year for me, felt like such a let down. Possibly because there were the usual man babies crying that ‘there’s no day for men’ (there is), I felt like there was no really strong political discussion around it. Probably because politicians are too afraid to talk about women because TIMs will also throw a tantrum. Let’s just keep pandering to the menfolk, shall we? 
The only stuff I really saw was all commercial and cynical, businesses trying to cash in on the day. I mean, I know that as a woman, I really like to celebrate IWD with some special doughnuts to really focus my attention on the causes close to my heart

Reading all these threads/comments makes me extremely grateful for a safe place to discuss this. Without the fear of being outcast by family & friends. I’m of an age where I knew never to call someone queer. My parents would have given me some right tit for using that word. Especially my Mom. One of her best friends was gay. He’s passed now but I’ve so many fond memories of him. He was never anything but loved. Especially locally. No one ever judged him or hated on him. Bearing in mind he came out in the 70’s it was a big deal back then. I was raised to respect his choices and I feel like that’s what is lacking these days. Basic human decency and respect for others. Forcing opinions on people who grew up in an era that was crucial to gay rights. Men and women who marched and shouted to be seen and heard are now mocked and ridiculed on SM by kids in furry costumes and anime get up! I always feel like their parents have taught them nothing about respect but then I remind myself I know of good solid families that have always done right by their children and been heartbroken when they have turned to drugs. Early 90’s I knew a lot my age that went down the addiction route, whether it be drugs or alcohol but today it seems to be this cult of non-binary or trans or pan sexual etc. I don’t have any social media at all except for the account on here. Is Tattle social media? 
I flick through the odd post on my nieces Instagram account, but I’m so glad to not be on it after a 5 minute scroll. I feel really lucky to have had a childhood without it.
I’m rambling now I just wanted to say it’s nice to read posts from people who have intelligent opinions on something that really matters.
Also, Jess Phillips knows exactly what she’s doing with that list. Quite canny Jess is. Very adept at playing both sides of the argument. Personally I can’t stand her. Unfortunately, a lot love her!

I don't know if you were a Terf last year? but 2022 IWD, was absolutely soul destroying particularly in the UK. Everyone from Police forces to local governments to designers, TV companies/shows, to huge corporations celebrated men! It really wasn't even 1% as bad this year. It shows that boycotting and pointing out sexism and misogyny actually does work. Probably the boycotting TBH but even so, there is a shift.IWD this year for me, felt like such a let down. While of course, studies into the harmful effects the treatments used to 'affirm dyphoria' actually have on children, is excellent and welcome, I am deeply concerned about GI lingering infringement on women's rights. Norway has introduced self ID and women are suffering so the government can pander to deluded men.
Wow, that is disappointing. Last IWD, I was definitely a feminist but not yet a TERF, so I’m guessing I missed a lot of this stuff. Also, I’m in Australia and it feels like we are somewhat behind the UK in this regard. I hope it gets nipped in the bid before it takes over. I’m going to see KJK at the Let Women Speak event in Sydney tomorrow. So excited!
I've not been on twitter for that long but it does seem like there's more comments pushing back recently. Not sure if it's to do with Elon Musk firing loads of moderators or people being less worried about posting TERF views now
I’m so sorry to hear of all these awful and disgusting labour stories. It’s shocking the disparity in care received and the inhumane ways women can be treated in their most vulnerable times.
I have just given birth to my own little preemie baby, but the care I have received to date has been gold standard. Very women centred (no birthing or chest feeding here, thank god) and I have been made to feel like an absolute superwoman in a very stressful time.
I just want wanted to say there are still those who aren’t caught up in all this bull, and give and treat women with the respect that we deserve. We are the ONLY sex that can birth children, and always will be.

My daughter went to the Tesco Express by us last night and was served by Violet the TIM. She came in and said 'why does Violet think he's a girl just because he calls himself a new name?' My heart sang.
You'll love it. I met so many amazing, clever women at the Glasgow one. I just hope it is policed properly.

I totally agree with you . I've had a mastectomy too .Stupid question possibly: I get how the men in skirts say "I identify as a women so I should use women's toilets" (yeah duck off mate) in an attempt to gain access there but I don't understand how they could even meet the criteria of gaining access to a women's grape centre - would it be because they say they have been grape (by another man)?

Off subject but as a woman who's had a mastectomy I'd love to see more garments shown on a post mastectomy model. Lots of post mastectomy bras are modelled on women with 2 breasts
Oh duck off Sainsburys!! Saw this today in the Mothers Day section. WTF has it got to do with Mothers Day anyway? I presume it's cos of IWD, but there are men on it?? I wonder if it's there when the Father's Day display goes up???
Oh and Sainos also think Mothers only want cook books, pj's and flowery tit commercialised bull I know, but what message does that send out to kids .
