I couldn’t agree more with the conversations about attention span. Mine has been shocking since lockdown. I was also furloughed for a few months but just couldn’t concentrate on reading! Am so glad it’s not just me. I was actually researching ADHD and was contemplating talking to my doctor!

I can however go for a walk and listen to Audible, I have listened to loads of books in Lockdown. Audible is brilliant especially if you listen to a book read by the author. Michelle Obama’s is excellent, it’s like she is chatting just to you. Tom Hanks reading The Dutch House was lovely, Lady Glencomers book was witty and interesting....I could do on.

To bring this back to topic, I also listen through my stereo when cooking And when tending my veggie patch, Ive had a great crop this year and looking forward to the pumpkins...send any pumpkin recipes!
I am still working at home on my laptop and video calls etc. My attention span for remembering my task list has become appalling. The amount of pieces of paper I am getting through to write lists is dreadful. I also find now that if I type a list in a word doc then it doesn’t have the same effect as handwriting a list - I feel the need to physically cross things off...

Food: I think I will make a chili cone carne tonight, which I haven’t had for probably a year at least.

Fraus, choose your fighter - http://baabar.co.uk/liverpool/shooters# (they all sound bleeping rank, but I do seem to recall necking a few toxic wastes in my time...)

My worst vomming story was when me and my bestie were around 14. My parents had gone out for the evening, and we'd found an offy which would serve us, so skulked out of the house and bought a huge bottle of Archers. We got back to the house and realised we'd locked ourselves out. We started drinking anyway. After a fair few gulps, we noticed one of the upstairs windows was open a crack and my dad had left his ladders out. In our Archers fuelled haze we thought it would be a great idea to climb up the side of the house. Luckily, we made it up there relatively unscathed, until my friend put her hand on a slug and started screaming. duck knows what the neighbours thought. Anyway we managed to clamber inside and proceeded to drink the rest of the Archers, getting absolutely steaming. Parents came back and I started feeling very ill, but I didn't want to go to the bathroom in case they heard me being sick, so I threw up in the glass I used for water by the side of my bed, and waited til they'd gone to bed before disposing of it  - and nope, haven't touched Archers since.
So sad I can’t keep up with these threads! Can’t believe I bobbed back in to see this. I still have some shot glasses from Baabar from student days, swiped in a backpack as a souvenir. Vividly remember the Braindamage, which was a shot of Baileys in some unidentified sweet red liqueur. The Baileys coagulated into a sort of brain shape. Can’t believe they still sell it! It’s giving me the ip just thinking about it 🤢😂. Happy days tho.
Hello to all you fraus, hope everyone ok x

omg yes, the trashy book idea is brilliant as you can finish them in a few hours over a few days and it gets you back into the swing of things massively. Also sometimes I wonder if I’m truly enjoying a book if I’m struggling with it, like I had to take myself out for a dinner for one to finish fleishman is in trouble it was so tit, but I’d bought it from Foyles (in hardback) so felt obliged 😫

And thank you re smug advert -
someone should write an ad blocker that covers them up with noticed like your baby is happy / healthy / thriving hun have a nice day x I had an awful one with an image of a very thin / underfed baby trying to flog those bottles with the nip teats saying how he wasn’t getting enough from breast and would only take these bottles, SO fucked up to use such terrifying and emotive imagery then target a group of women who are likely suffering from some degree of adverse mental health, and definitely exhausted and scared. Bunch of cunts tbh x
Your perseverance is admirable! Honestly no expensive bad book is worth your time, I really liked the idea of Milkman by Anna Burns and felt like I had to finish it because Man Booker Prize winner (ha) but it ended up being a case of ‘thanks, I hate it’... maybe I should’ve taken it out to dinner though?!

Yes absolutely x to the ad blocker, I believe there’s a long winded way of blocking all baby ads through Facebook? Is it possible to write a script or will fb not appreciate the messing? There was a lot of criticism a while back as women who’d lost babies were still getting ads which is obviously not appropriate at all and Facebook should be doing more. It’s such bad publicity and not like the women are going to be clicking the ads anyway

Agree so much that they shouldn’t be targeting such a vulnerable audience, those ads should be much more tightly regulated imo. When I had a threatened miscarriage I booked a scan in at a private clinic (NHS just advise to watch and wait) which mostly did IVF, like the majority of customers had reason to doubt their pregnancy/future pregnancy would be successful... yet they had photos of modelesque babies everywhere! Really induced the mama bear rage in me because WHAT THE duck ARE YOU DOING, a baby isn’t a product you can sell!
Sorry it’s miserable but it’s all so unethical! Don’t let it get to you, they are complete cunts x fact is you can provide your baby with all the important things and they can’t stand it because no £££ for them

Apparently it's grenadine! And that sounds absolutely rank... Brain shape

I'm off on a hike today and I've got my trusty trail snack... Probably won't need to warm them up in my armpit today

Also makeup inclined fraus - I spunked £65 on updating my makeup bag yesterday and splashed out on the It Cosmetics CC cream that everyone goes nuts for. It goes on absolutely gorgeously and looks great (I hate heavy foundations so it's perfect for me) - I'll see how it fares under a mask and walking in the sun all day.

I'm on an online book group and have seen so many women say how they struggled with concentration for books after having a baby. I was the same. Your life's changed hugely, and yes googling loads can bring its own issues. I would like to boot new mum shamers to the moon!

The first book that got me back to reading after having my son was Marian Keyes, The Mystery of Mercy Close. 🙂

Great choice- I read a few of Marian Keyes 'Walsh sisters' books during mat leave and that and Rachel's Holiday are definitely the best. I go through phases where I read a lot and then not very much at all.
I also really liked Small Pleasures

I've never given audiobooks a try before, but after a few of you have suggested them here, I think I will. Having Tom Hanks' voice in my ear for a few hours sounds marvellous.

She's a really funny writer, I think her Walsh family books are her funniest. A real pick me up... for all the subject matter shouldnt actually be lighthearted!
I think it's great how open she is about her own struggles, too. Open without being woe about herself.

Audiobooks can be excellent if you get the right narrator. The guy who does Ken Follett's Kingsbridge books (minus one week on the newest release!) And Davina Porter who narrates the Outlander series, are among the best I've heard. There are some rotters, but Audible are pretty good with returns if you get a duff one.

You get two free audiobooks with the Audible free trial and I think they bribe you if you try to cancel so it’s worth testing out. Will be signing up myself as I want to listen to the new Alan Partridge podcast without paying £20 for the privilege 😂

omg my love I hope you’re doing better today?? So glad you’re not alarmed though. ❤ Did you get to sit on one of those squishy black mattresses - they’re heaven why does no one make chairs that cosy ?!

catching up and laughing along. At a stage where I have brain power to read again, started devotion today - it’s sort of freaking me out already so not sure why I’m reading it as we still don’t have back curtains (ETA the 20th 😫). I really loved self care (can’t remember author) and think a lot of tattlers would as it’s so apt about #girlboss commercial feminism.
Thank you - sleep has helped massively and just taking it easy. I think because the Dr and Midwife were so matter of fact/unphased it helped to settle me. Yes to the squishy black mattresses! I’ve never understood how hospitals can have such uncomfortable chairs...like use the squishy mattress material to cushion the chairs with surely?! It would benefit most departments to be fair not just maternity to have comfier chairs.

Compeltely agree with you and @chocolate choux - it makes my mind boggle that this side of ads isn’t more heavily controlled? Especially with what we know about peri/post natal mental health let alone just how insensitive it all is. It’s a natural part of motherhood to feel vulnerable too because as amazing as it is it’s also a massive head duck as there is no manual/all babies/experiences vary. Given how they work out the algorithms to target the ads in the first place they can surely work them out to provide a ad on/tool for people to be able to switch them off?

ETA: The Pierce Brosnan film was shocking - he played a character so misogynistic it made James Bond look like a feminist! Then watched Live Wire and it was the same thing character wise - though I imagine this was the blue print of most early 90s films?

Don’t forget the library usually also has lots of audio books, on an app at home- ours has certainly stepped up their offering during lockdown.

I am an audible member too though, the wrong narrator can make things awful- I hate ones that act out the dialogue with different voices, I just want someone to read me the story!

Smoked salmon sausages sound interesting (awful lot of Ssss there!)

I'm a horribly basic witch today, and we've just had microwave mince and cheese pies, with crinkly oven chips for tea.

i dont know if it;s still the case, but on kindle you used to be able to return books for like 48 hours after purchasing, one of my friends who was a fast reader used to buy all the "trashy" books she didn't want to pay for (50 shades of grey etc) quickly read them and return them, she did it 100s of times

Ugh I'm listening to Dark Summit by Nick Heil about a disastrous Everest attempt and the narrator is rubbish, he sounds robotic and also does awful accents. I need good audiobook and listening material, it's the only way I can get through a run!

My lunch! (OK fine I also have a pret sandwich)... One of my favourite things to do is go on long walks, drinking along the way. Me and my pal are experts - we walked the entire Kent coastline mostly pissed. Highlights included getting lost in the viagra laboratory complex, and calling a man who pushed in front of me in Waitrose a bleeping gammon (I was already several wines in... And he WAS a gammon) 😬
