How many people have been saying, over and over and over again, that the restaurants are too much for Abbie to deal with and that's why she's acting out???
How many times have they been told she's clearly in distress? Strangers can see in these "best of the day" moments that Asa chooses to show the entire internet that Abbie is in distress.
And just yesterday we got that rambling boo-hoo about how much she loves restaurants and she doesn't want to leave and they want the world to be assessible for Abbie so she has to get used to being in restaurants.

Agreed. Does she have the comprehension skills of a NT person her age? No. That's obvious. But she does have a rudimentary capacity to understand some things. As you said, and as others have said, her comprehension skills appear to be that of a toddler (varying depending on the particular subject at hand) and toddlers are capable of understanding things. As you said, it varies even day to day on just how aware and receptive she is. If she's having a really hard time with sensory processing things, she complies a lot less when being told to do or not do something. It's definitely not black and white. There are too many variables.

As I said before, if you took any child, ND or NT, and never bothered to discipline them, never corrected them, never parented them really, you'd get a defiant, unruly, chaotic, difficult to handle child.
Abbie would always be extremely limited in what she's capable of, but like you said, she'd be a lot happier (and so would A&P because her being more compliant would be a hell of a lot less stressful for them) and more stable. Being more stable she likely would not act out as often as she does or to the extent that she does (We don't know the true extent but there are suggestions that it gets pretty bad). Abbie could have a better quality of life and in turn so would A&P because she would be easier to deal with and to take care of.
But, as we know, A&P are too goddamn selfish and lazy to put in the work that would require. It's too much for them and they can't be bothered. So now, they have to live with the consequences of that. And so does Abbie.

There is no reason to take Abbie to a restaurant...as long as she eats..she doesn't care about going out..I bet she enjoys eating at home more than a restaurant. OMG Can I just take a moment to laugh at the fact they are just NOW dealing with OCD behaviors??!! My son has what we think is basically Tourettic OCD, We see his compulsive behaviors really ramp up when he is having tons of tics. Things like sticking his head in water, dunking things in sinks or toilets, dropping cookware/dinnerware in the sink or tossing it. It's a full on pain in the ass, and when you're going on very little sleep (he also pulls all nighters usually during those times because his brain just cannot settle) it's not easy and you're not at all smiley and cheerful. Hold on tattlers cause this is going to be fun! LOL Also, fun fact, OCD is rooted in Anxiety. GB should know about this stuff with his psych degree. I'm sure he took things like Abnormal Psych and Behavior Modification as part of his coursework.

Oh Shoot, I forgot about all that! You're right though! The whole picking the wall thing recently too and I'd even possibly say her pulling the curtain rods down could be a compulsion too. There's not too much in the way of therapy we can do for my own kids OCD (and yep, that's also another dx he has...LOL). He simply cannot do any sort of cognitive behavioral therapies because of his severe ID and lack of verbal skills. We basically just have to redesign our lives around his obsessions and limit access. For things like peeling, we give him things he CAN peel. We don't go into restaurants that have low ceiling fans. We don't have pictures on our walls. We scope out places before we go with him. We call hotels and ask them about ceiling fans/picture frames/etc on the walls. Our extended family will even scout out places for us before we come visit. It's crazy what kinds of fore thought we have to do, but when done right, we can have a great time!
