She graduated from a boarding school in Hong Kong, she comes from good money I'm guessing.

I'm so confused about Elena's political stance. Sometimes she expresses more liberal views, other times she comes across as more conservative. I know she's said that she considers herself to be right-wing, but I don't know much about german politics, and left/right-wing beliefs differ greatly from country to country. An opinion that in one place is considered left-wing would be considered right-wing in other places. So I don't know what "right-wing" means in Germany. But I was quite surprised to hear that Elena votes for a conservative party. That's not the impression I had of her.

Ugh. Of course rich girl with money votes conservative. I thought she was the best out of the studytube bunch.

I wouldn't know what she's saying/doing these days as she's only posting in German now and seems to have forgotten her Youtube followers who followed her uni journey for so long, in English (followers from all over the world). Going forward if she wants to stick to Instagram in German, fine, but at least say bye and thank you to the Youtube followers who she spoke to in English for the past 4-5 years ...

Germany currently has one extreme right wing party, lib dems (right-middle) christian-conservative (right-middle) (the latter two are basically our “tories”) a “labour” party (middle-left), greens (middle-left to left) and a left wing party.
Hope that helps a bit. Where did you hear how
she voted?

Oh, thanks. I actually watched a Q&A video of hers of a couple of years ago and she mentioned it. I don't know if she's changed her mind since.

Yeah, basically tories is a good descriptor for the CDU (from what I know about UK politics)

She interned for a CDU member of parliament last year, so I'd assume that's how she votes and sees herself politically?

Sounds like she didn't have a great childhood (her IG story ask). someone asked a q in English and she replied in German. I think she's done with her English audience for good.

Her answers had a very condescending undertone imo.
Hm, I don't know, the answers seemed fine to me. What made you think they were condescending?

By the way, I watched a video where she said she has some very unpopular opinions about politics and feminism and now I wonder what they are, because I've never heard her say anything actually unpopular. I wonder if she keeps those opinions to herself because they would come across as classist/misogynistic or bigoted in some other way? I hope that's not the case, because she seems like a kind and reasonable person. But the fact that she votes conservative AND has unpopular opinions "about almost everything, especially politics and feminism" doesn't sound so great.

No, she really doesn't. Have you seen any of her videos? I'm just wondering because she constantly talks about her scholarships and about how she was able to finance everything.

She's from a middle class family. Her mom never attended university and has a job at a health insurance company that doesn't require a degree but an apprenticeship and that doesn't pay very much. Elena mentioned what it was at some point. I can tell because I am German as well and know people who work the same kind of job. She really isn't rich. She grew up with a single mom as well which is more difficult and she always explained how important it is for her to maintain all her scholarships because otherwise she would struggle financially.

The boarding school in Hong Kong is known for taking students in no matter their financial situation and providing huge scholarships to students who need them. I know because I thought about applying to that network of schools when I was fifteen. The application process is intense, lots of essays, interviews, presentations, an entire selection weekend.

I'm sorry, but that's really unfair and not true at all. The CDU welcomes refugees whereas the Tories try to deport every single one of them. This is not a fair comparison. Angela Merkel was part of the CDU, for example, and she is hardly super conservative or terrible. She welcomed more refugees when she was in power than pretty much any other nation in Europe so she is hardly a Tory.

I actually registered here to ask about what happened to Elena.

I used to love her and watched all of her videos. I still like her as a person.

But I am really wondering what happened to her content. She went from regular youtube videos in English to no youtube videos at all and lots of TikTok and instagram content in German. I speak German but she feels like a completely different person in those videos.

Everything is different from her tone of voice to the way she talks. In English she was always very sweet and funny and in German she seems more tough and uses a lot of slang. It's like watching a completely different person. Her audience must be much younger now as well?

I wonder whether her boyfriend had something to do with it? That she wants to focus on German and life in Germany? I am not quite sure but I think she might plan to stay in Germany as she wrote on instagram that she doesn't believe in long distance relationships (only for a limited time period).

I wish she would produce youtube videos again and I miss her book club!

Maybe it is more fun for her to produce TikTok content in German? I think TikTok doesn't pay well at all so it can't be that. I miss her old content so much.

She mentioned once (some years ago) that she would stop doing YT videos if she ever felt that she had nothing productive or meaningful to say. Maybe she feels that this time has come? Or maybe she just grew as a person –it happens– and doesn't enjoy the same things anymore. Maybe TikTok requires less time and effort and that's why she has focused on that instead on YouTube.

Unfortunately, I don't speak German, so I can't talk about her acting like a “completely different person” when she speaks it (maybe you could translate a german TikTok or two for us that you feel show her as a different person? I'm curious). But she's mentioned that she enjoys speaking German more, because she can make jokes that she can't make in English. So maybe she seemed different when she used to speak English because she wasn't very familiar with the English slang and just didn't have the necessary vocabulary to speak in the way she wanted.

I don't know whether her boyfriend played any part in that, but the fact that she switched to German when she met him seems like an odd coincidence.

Thank you!

I just feel like she is producing lots and lots of content on TikTok so I don't think it's that she doesn't have anything to say. She even has a whole podcast on TikTok in which she is talking lots.

Yes, it's her decision of course and I still like her. It is nothing personal. It just feels weird how she would go from 100% in English to 95% percent in German. I speak German but if I didn't I would feel pretty sad I think. Many people have followed her for years and she basically left them without even a goodbye or a thank you.

I think she would be familiar with English slang as she has been taught exclusively in English since the age of sixteen, for six years.

I don't know if a translation would make sense because it is so much slang, but she used to greet people in a sweet and friendly way "Hi everyone, it's Elena" and now she's basically like "Hey hotties, whazzzupppp yayyyy" (not exactly as slang is hard to translate but she calls people "Schnecken" which literally means "snails" and is a slang term for a hot/attractive girl). Maybe she wants to appeal to a younger TikTok audience.

Again, I love her still, it is just so confusing to me.

Bit in bold: this is what doesn't seem right, she practically abandoned her very polite followers on Youtube during her final year, people who had watched her journey from the beginning, were rooting for her, she barely updated them during the past year and hasn't really explained herself or said "thanks but goodbye" to them. It just seems rude, to be honest. It would be different if she decided social media was over, but she's clearly on Instagram and TikTok a lot, so it's not a social media thing. I think she should do one more Youtube video acknowledging her fans and thanking them, and wrap up the channel if that's how she feels.

THIS. I can't understand why she couldn't even do that. It's not like it would take so much effort or something. Just a simple thank you/goodbye. The way she handled it was so rude and snobbish, and I wish she saw this conversation and finally said something. Like, I just don't understand it. It would take ZERO effort to post a story or a post talking about it. That's what most people with a big audience and basic courtesy would do. It's like she *wanted* to show us that she doesn't give a damn about her english-speaking audience, now that she's got a german boyfriend. I mean, it sounds harsh but that's how it felt like.
