I'm finding a lot of schools and academies are doing this - back in the temping days it happened a lot to me and other people. I'd always make a point of raising something before I left and I just made sure to be professionally polite (yet pissed off hah). Completely understandable that it's quite raw at the moment - have you had anything else through the grapevine come August workwise?
From what I can gather, this school has got form for messing people around so I shouldn't be surprised... A long term supply TA only found out it was her last day last week when she was presented with a card and flowers! She thought she was staying on till the end of term!

I haven't got anything in the pipeline for September, luckily my contract is until August 31st so I'll at least get paid, if I find something sooner, even better! I'm just annoyed because I'd have never accepted the job if I'd known it was definitely only temporary, I had so much stress and anxiety finding this one, I really don't want to go through it again!

They sound like tit employers, whether through incompetence or design. Fingers crossed that you find something better soon. I think, despite there being HR procedures, sometimes people act in idiotic ways. I have been in my job a while so haven’t been to an interview for yonks. But I went through a period of having loads - I already had a job, wanted a change so spent time applying and going to interviews with no pressure to succeed. Some of the interviews! One guy started massaging my shoulders when I was doing a test. I got offered that job and told them where to stick it. Someone else interviewed me with their back to me, they didn’t think to arrange the room beforehand. I stopped the interview a few minutes in and said this is not for me, thank you for your time, and left. Easy to do if you don’t need a job. But in recruitment there are some dingbats.

Hope it’s ok to jump in. I’m another one who hates my job. I only started 3 months ago after taking time out for training for a previous job I gave up on. My manager seems to dislike me and undermines me all day. She’ll tell me to do something, wait until I’ve done and it tell me it’s wrong and I should have done it like xyz. I’ve had no training and she expects me to be a professional already. She’s crossed the line now I hear she has called me names to other staff members who are encouraging me to report her. I just don’t need the stress I’ve got children and a new baby to focus on and missing out on time with them makes it worse than I don’t enjoy the job I leave for every morning. I’m not confrontational in the ‘real world’ so as tempting as it is to call her out on her behaviour I know I’ll be the ‘bad guy’ and she’ll have ammunition to push me out of my job if that’s her plan. Has anyone else been in this situation and found a way to deal with it? I’m considering leaving but I really don’t want to have to go onto universal credit because I have no job and can’t feed my kids.

Thank you, I hope so too! I'm quite inexperienced interview wise, I was self employed for 10 years and this was the first interview I had since giving it up! The job I had before that I was in 7 years so it's been a long time since I was in the job hunting phase. Things have changed a lot!

Desperate to get out of my job. I feel like I can't ask questions. Or for another pair of eyes to check data. Iv inherited a load of spreadsheets and I'm kept out of half the information so I'm constantly working backwards. There's a small error somewhere. I have looked for hours and rerun everything I can think of. I'm now spending more time on this than other important things. I was at my wit's end with it last night. Work all went out to the pub and I was sat trying to figure it out!. Gave up when a huge headache came on and emailed the boss asking for another set of eyes to look. Now he's pissed off with me and thinks I should know.

Am I not supposed to be learning from him. Makes me panic everyone I talk to him that's he's going to shout at me or be pissy. I don't know how much more I can take. I'm looking for jobs but nothings really coming up.

I’m very close to handing in my notice. I’ve taken today off as breathing space but yesterday I was just concerned about how a few things went down.

  • New manager throws a completely new system at me to use for something urgent. When I’ve asked for a Teams session to go over the basics she suggests I track down a manual somewhere on our shared drive. Spoiler - it doesn’t exist. It’s something that needs training on - finance related and if it’s done incorrectly it brings in complaints from customers and clients. She’s had this in her inbox for three months and the closer she gets to the deadline she realises she doesn’t have capacity and throws it to me.
  • The office has had a refurb, but the internet is awful. I couldn’t physically do anything yesterday and when I suggested I would WFH the rest of the day I got some very weird looks from other teams - it’s like I shot someone’s dog. The HR Manager who was in asked me to use my own phone data as a hotspot (?!)
  • My mental health is terrible because of this job. I’m actively looking to go (and obviously keeping it on the quiet from anyone). It’s got to the point where I have work dreads every single day and I’m incredibly emotional. The longer I carry on the more ill it’s making me - so I need to go see a doctor at this rate.
  • Policy-wise I need to either let HR know or my line manager. The nature of some of my work is that if it’s not done, there are operational circumstances. Thats fine - I’ve drafted a short handover based on being off for a few days, I make sure relevant external people know and they have points of contact and I arrange a call with my line manager. I’ve told her I’m unwell as per the policy - she then tells me she doesn’t know the policy themselves, I need to speak to her higher up and I cannot log off until I do so.
  • Higher up then calls me on Teams and grills me for 15 minutes on how I’m feeling. I don’t feel comfortable declaring anything bar mental health - I’m conscious that employers have a duty of care to their staff, but this wasn’t anything welfare related. This was overly aggressive where she tried to pick apart what little I said.
  • She then tells me that to be off sick I’d need a doctor’s note from day 1, I need to be conscious of the time of year and HR will be in touch on Monday after I have a day’s annual leave. You self certify for 7 full days and then after that period it’s a note…even though this is in writing nobody knows this?! She even asked me if I had annual leave left and can I use this for if I'm ill - what?!

This is the same company where someone’s parent died and they expected them to still be logged on a day after working.

Other teams have observed that I’ve had absolutely no training and getting some very baffling treatment (from a team that never come in the office at all - yet I’m expected to always be there unless if I have a “genuine reason”). It’s an absolute shitshow and the closer we get to the the incredibly busy period end of July it’s getting worse.

I respect that some companies need to think of their operational needs (I am not expecting a company to fall at my feet and give me unlimited time off while I recover - business is business). But Jesus Christ, I don’t even feel comfortable anymore having the audacity to follow a policy when I’m very unwell. I’ve always had my notice drafted on my personal email - I’m feeling I should be ready to send it across when HR speak to me after the weekend. I now feel that I’ve stuck my neck out too much by doing what I thought was right for me and I’ve got a target on my back.

And what I don’t appreciate is that I’ve raised this with my line manager, they’ve fobbed me off onto someone senior who has little dealings with me and clearly doesn’t even know any bloody HR policies!!!

You don’t need a certificate from Day One. It’s day 7. A GP would not thank you for contacting them before then.

If you are sick, you are sick.

What evidence do I have to give to my employer to show that I am unwell?
It is generally up to your employer what evidence to request, however your employer is not allowed to ask for a medical certificate (or ‘fit note’) for the first seven days of absence.

Honestly - get out. It’s not worth it. Working your notice in a toxic environment brings a huge amount of peace.

Has anyone got any advice in dealing with a manager who constantly seems not to have capacity? I’m working weekends just to keep a float and it’s doing nothing for my health.

Unfortunately the easiest way to deal with this is to stop compensating in your own time. Work not being completed will mean your manager suddenly finds capacity to address the issues. It’s counter intuitive for many of us, but is also what we need to do to look after ourselves. No matter what mission statement or perks exist, the majority of us are only numbers on a payroll system and will be forgotten after we are gone.

Great employees make bad managers look good, but it should never be to the detriment of your health.

@toetoetoe88 What an absolute tit show, I'm sorry that you were thrown into this. Please take the days off for your own good - "consider the time of the year" - wtaf? People don't consider the time of the year when they get unwell. I appreciate that it's holiday season in many places and that there are busy times for many people that coincide with that, but maybe the should hire more staff then if they can't compensate for one person. A person, as you say, that was left without any real training.

Would it be possible for you to hand in your notice without having something new lined up already? Your descriptions leaves me angry and exhausted on your behalf and I'm not the one living it... I'm not sure I'd have the mental capacity to look for a new job and interview for it. But of course, bills need to be paid, etc...

I told work that I'm unwell and self-certifying today. In the middle of drafting a handover all my access on my network goes - work email, systems, etc. Then get another phone call from a higher up demanding answers and they've "cut my work access so I don't have to worry this week". I'm sensing they're gearing up to get rid of me (but I'd be happy to admit it's paranoia). As weird as it sounds, I just didn't feel mentally up to telling them I was actively going. Considering I've declared mental health, I think cutting systems with no warning is pretty bleeping crappy.

When I'm not thinking about this current place and interviewing I am a completely different person. I'm gearing up for having to wait a few months before going into something else. I won't lie and say it's really easy (there is the fear of getting nothing and my partner needing to foot everything for a few months) but focusing on the job-hunt is something I'm happy to do.

Ultimately I think they'll get nasty with references - I'm unwell when it comes to this place but I can imagine any reference that comes their way is going to get an interesting response. I don't believe there is anything wrong with what I'm doing (I'm sadly not going to be the only person in history who has had a terrible experience) but...

I also really appreciate everyone who has given advice - sometimes it helps to know that I'm not going mad!

I wouldn't stress about references tbh, most people in this day and age don't give bad references, and if they do it is pretty easy to prove otherwise, most new employers would ask you to explain something negative, as by the point they ask for references they basically want to hire you. Unless they have something tangible like "she was late for work every day/isn't qualified to..." you can mostly explain the situation. Anotehr alternative, if you are really worried, would be to give the name/contact of someone else in the company that you get on okay with (if this is possible), in my experience places don't necessarily need your manager to give one, could also be someone else from your team

Legally the worst they can do is deny a reference or just state your dates of employment. They can't write anything negative in a reference.

This isn’t true. You can be given a bad reference as long as it’s true. If it was proven you stole from your work, that can be included in a reference. Most places won’t include anything negative but they can.

Yes it’s a myth that you can’t give a bad reference
It has to be factual
Some references are tick box questions and some a free text paragraph

Never been in this situation tbh, but it is so unfair, you can be fired from so many jobs with almost no warning, I don't get why the responsibility for advising is on the emloyee. If I were you I would just view this as a good reason you are leaving

Yup, but it wasn’t so bad. Less responsibility for things in most cases, put on gardening leave in one place which was actually lovely because it was the height of summer and I had a young child at the time!

I've had a mixed bag overall. Some companies were really good (I left on good terms) - did a whole leaving do and a card, I keep in contact with them and it was nice. Still nerve-wracking doing it as I still felt handing my notice in was me doing something wrong! Others weren't the happiest so I had the cool treatment.

My last job which I've posted about here just blanked me on the day I handed my notice in along with my equipment. Actually looking through me and refusing to acknowledge me. Yet they did a tribute in the staff newsletter today :ROFLMAO:
