So much to unpack in that Grazia article. I feel for her, it sounds awful, but surely her being so busy and frazzled is the absolute last thing she should be doing when her mental health is this fragile? Also huge red flag that she couldn't confide in her husband. I also find it a bit harmful that she says "10-20 minutes of meditation has been the biggest game-changer" as if that's the cure. Positive affirmations do not cure post-natal depression or other mental illness. The woman needs therapy and possibly some medication. Absolutely no shame in it. She may have stopped the "clean eating" message but her ethos is still so wrapped up in pseudoscience.
The Grazia article is pretty horrifying, considering it seems to only be skimming the surface of what's going on. She's talking about enormous stress, grief, depression, intrusive thoughts that have endured for years. She desperately needs therapy! I can't believe she's citing quick meditation, a bit of yoga and daily affirmations (i.e. toxic positivity) as tools to cope. Saying that's all she needs to 'rewire her brain' is really harmful.

Matt seems like a toxic husband. I felt sad looking at the pictures of her revisiting the old deli - he opened that deli and plunged her into debt. He’s probably the deep rooted cause of the trauma and mental health issues she’s talked about. He wants that fast lane lifestyle and it’s probably slowly hurting her.

Laughable that the article gives top tips on wellbeing from Ella, why didn’t they provide these from a professional. She’s clearly in no position to be giving out advice to others. Crazy that she has a podcast on wellbeing too, why are people taken in by her, she has no clue like the rest of us.

Yes, they are literally the definition of toxic positivity!

It’s alarming how changeable her back story has become. There is opening up about things but she has directly contradicted everything she has been saying for years and she has made a fortune (which ‘whirlwind romance’ husband has then burned through) from saying plants make you feel amazing amongst other claims. What a fraud.

I have archived the article in case it is taken down in time:

‘I Was Terrified Of Life And Too Scared To Tell Anyone About It’
Deliciously Ella founder Ella Mills writes exclusively for Grazia about her mental health struggles as a new parent

OMG that article ... every paragraph is like she's beating herself up in front of you 😨 and then to say 'but finally for the first time in my life I am now happy'... Give it a year or two and she will be writing about how this was the most miserable time of her life too. It's appalling that she's allowed to sell wellbeing advice and lie about its effectiveness in her own life.

I hate to say it but I think she has always been a hypochondriac and I think a lot of her physical illness back in the day was actually psychosomatic/ down to her mental health. Also it's harsh but I think she is a classic case of a bored little rich girl creating a lot of her own problems, with the business and especially with putting herself on instagram/ making her life and business subject to so many people's opinions and whether people 'like' her or not (something that featured heavily in the article).

I think that's why it's hard to sympathise with her because she is so unappreciative and never acknowledges her huge privileges in life - but rather tries to make more money she doesn't need by selling a complete lie to people also suffering with their mental/ physical health 🤦‍♀️

I always wondered if her dad was out to the family prior to being publicly outed but reading between the lines of the article it seems he really was living a double life and it was revealed to everyone at more or less the same time. And it’s not like he suddenly realised he was gay as there were hints in the tabloids for years about his affairs with men and he always said they were nasty rumours. So he was barefaced lying to his wife the whole time? For the children it must have felt like their entire childhoods were a lie in a way?

I can’t fathom what a huge betrayal that would feel like. And what the child witnessed their mother going through. What your idea of a relationship, love should be etc. But more importantly if her dad is capable of that level of deception, what else is he capable of? We know he had links to Epstein. And we know he rinsed taxpayers for every penny despite being supremely wealthy. You cannot tell me he is a man of morals.
And it was her dad who introduced her to Matt? Yikes. Don’t know where you start to unpack all that.

That’s not to go all ‘poor little rich girl’ - after all she can afford the very best therapy. It doesn’t excuse her for pushing a fake fraudulent clean eating persona on people for years either, far from it.

To be honest it would be a bit of a fucked up childhood... your dad who tells the world he is straight and loves your mum... but is having multiple secretive extramarital affairs with men, that his wife finds out about from at the very least tabloid rumours. And his wife clearly wasn't OK with it given the divorce. Must have been a very unhappy house, it's no wonder she is so neurotic.

Yes it makes you wonder what else he was up to. I wonder if he had to come out because something really bad was going to be revealed, a la Philip Schofield

Politely disagree, I have the same health conditions that she has and experience the same symptoms she outlined in her first book, they’re unfortunately not made up, I very much wish they were, she’s just pushed them aside these days to talk more about the mental load instead of the physical.

I don’t think anyone here is questioning whether POTS etc is real. Specifically regarding Ella - unfortunately if you keep re-writing history to such a degree as Ella keeps doing then it’s only logical that people start doubting everything else you have claimed. Especially if it is baked into to the origin story of your incredibly lucrative brand. And you have a history of chasing fad after fad and then pretending you were never on the bandwagon let alone leading the charge. There is a huge risk in monetising your medical diagnoses the way she has. Live by the sword etc.

My sympathies with anyone who has any of the same conditions as she has claimed to have because it is annoying as duck to have people think ‘oh that billionaires daughter had the same and became well by eating endless variations of sweet potato brownies and sticky garlicky miso mushrooms’. Cool thanks Ella!!

Yes I phrased it badly and didn't mean to cause any offence @Meg78

I was defo meaning more along the lines of what @PineappleQueen19 has described really well. The most extreme end of the spectrum is that Belle Gibson woman who faked a flipping brain tumour that she claimed to fix with clean eating. Ella's claim to have fixed her physical issues with clean eating and wellness easily fits into that type of scamming

She let it slip that she was on a bunch of meds a few times. And then she came off them and then managed her symptoms with lifestyle changes.

I have a chronic condition and trust me I tried everything in terms of eating habits : no gluten, no dairy, no industrial food, 8 fruits and vegetables a day...while it certainly helps feeling good and having a good digestion..it doesnt cure my chronic pain at all ...
so maybe it helped Ella but in my case what helped proved to be pilates to strengthen my body and therapy to better accept what I am going through
As you said Ella is building a business around that whole sweet potato brownies and garlic cured my health ...but I am not convinced

The original story never made any sense, she was selling a lifestyle that was completely unobtainable for most people, she worked with private specialist doctors, she had a personalised exercise program that was something like yoga 5 times a week, I mean how much does that cost alone! Plus all the superfood powders she used to constantly go on about, which I think everyone now knows were a total fad. Then there’s been people who have spoken up about knowing her from uni and suggestions that it wasn’t just unhealthy food she enjoyed at uni, if you know what I mean. So of course giving up a lifestyle like that, eating more fruit and vegetables is going to make you feel better no question. Plus she had the right look to back it up, at that point. The story was so conveniently engineered to launch her brand and it remains to be a load of rubbish.

The new podcast format seems really odd. It used to be the science behind wellness, now it’s ‘poor little white rich girl’ Caggie complaining about low self esteem. Just feels a bit basic.

I love hearing how two thin, rich, white women have learnt to let go of perfectionism and needing to control everything 🤣🤣🤣

Cue Ella showing us how she used a bath mat for her yoga routine in an emergency situation once. She’s so adaptable 🥰
Ella is very much a basic white girl… keeping up with the kardashians and now putting a Z list celeb from MIC on her podcast. She can’t even stay on brand.

Personally I believe Ella truly did have POTS - and yes it is a very real illness, which causes sufferers debilitating symptoms.

HOWEVER, where my gripe comes in is I think she’s almost made POTS look like it isn’t a serious illness by claiming it can be cured within a year or so by being vegan and doing yoga. In addition to this, as others have noted she keeps changing her back story about POTS.

I remember seeing in an interview with Ella once (which now seems to have been removed from the internet 🤔) that her doctors believe she developed POTS after a suspected Epstein Barr (glandular fever) infection at the age of 20. As someone who went through an extremely similar situation, if this is the true back story (which I think is statistically likely) it’s highly probable that Ella’s condition simply improved naturally with time, as she was young and it was caused by a virus. POTS cases which are caused by viruses tend to have better recovery rates, as do POTS cases in young people - nothing to do with being vegan.

While I’m pleased for Ella that her POTS symptoms improved, personally I think DE was initially just a rich girl hobby that gave her a sense of control (orthorexia) with all the “clean eating”, which ultimately led to business opportunity, which Matt has now taken over due to not having a career/business of his own
