Yesterday, I watched this Mina Le video and it reminded me of Dakota SO much, especially the woman who converted solely for the
aesthetic. I did not realise there was a thread of her on here but she popped up a while back on my TikTok when she had a very small following. I heard she was Aussie like me, read and wrote so in shared interests, I followed her... good grief, she is insufferable and seems to have only gotten worse! I love poetry, write myself, and really enjoy reading, but there's something about her that is so pretentious that I'm really surprised people are drawn to her content in honesty.
Just found ou that Dakota abandoned her cats when she moved to England. This kind of thing really boils my blood, I live in South America and I see people in their 20s giving away their pets so they can move to Europe allllll the time. They either give them away to the first person that shows any interest or force them on their friends and family, who never wanted them in the first place. This is beyond selfish, and treating animals like they're disposable is borderline cruel. The funny thing's that she made sure to take almost all her books with her, and I bet that wasn't cheap. It's important to have priorities, right? I guess cats don't really fit the tortured-poet-female-rage-"sapphic"-pomegranate-cannibalism-as-a-metaphor-for-love-the-secret-history-ballet-core-cigarettes-60's-lolita aesthetic.

I agree i wouldnt be able to seperate from my pet permanently as well. The pet becomes a part of your soul in my case.
This is awful, and I’ve always wondered about the logistics of bringing her books with her, it can’t be cheap. I hate people who don’t take into account the fact that pets are a life you’ve made yourself responsible for so you should know it’s a responsibility you’ll have for up to two decades if it all goes well.
Im sure with her following and taking into account how much she travels around/spends on superfluous stuff money wouldn’t be an impediment to bringing her cats along. My two cents are on her simply not being able to handle anything that doesn’t allow her to live in perpetual teenagehood. Cats would demand planning and commitment, I imagine impromptu trips to Italy so she can film aesthetic videos and live out some sort of Donna Tartt-esque fantasy are more important to her.

I just feel like she’s behind the times. The whole ‘unhinged girlhood’ trend is starting to become old in the market, she probably started writing the book off the back of the ~I support women’s wrongs~ mania on YouTube and TikTok and, as novels take time, is releasing hers 2 or 3 years too late.
Lisa Taddeo, Ottessa Moshfegh, Elif Batuman, Emma Cline, Carmen Maria Machado, Mona Awad, Eliza Clark, Raven Leilani etc. all blew up around that time but I don’t see those themes being as successful now. The ones released recently are doing well enough with people who already enjoy this type of lit fic (myself included) but it’s definitely not as a big a momentum as it once was.

Dakota tries to portray a progressive image on social media but she gives me “no politics on the table” vibes. Probably someone who read the passage about Henry Winter not knowing about the moon landing and thought it was cool and aspirational instead of pathetic lol.
this is why it makes me cringe so much that she'd modelled her entire look and aesthetic off Camilla, either she didn't understand the book and she's not as smart as she would suggest or she understood it was a satire and has still chosen to still base her personality off an incestual victim of the male gaze and idk which is worse
Here's a small compilation of Dakota's posts referencing milk on Instagram during the last month. Oh, I might have missed some. Multiple people have warned her about milk being widely used as nazi/white supremacist dog whistle on social media these days but it seems she just has to keep making posts about it because she looooooooves milk so much!!! And she makes sure to always pose with it alongside her rich white "trad yet apolitical" European friends. Not a great look.

Honestly I haven't seen milk being used as a dog whistle before but it makes sense, especially with this military, posh, Germany 1940s aesthetic she seems to adore with her boys. Yuck, she really should stand outside of herself and take a hard look at what she posts.
Just to clarify: the milk thing is based on the eugenicist premise that white people can digest cow's milk better because they're genetically superior. Drinking milk in photos/videos is a way to affirm and signal their beliefs. It started on forums like 4chan, and it's spreading everywhere, that's why so many white supremacists have a glass of milk emoji beside their names on that hell hole called Twitter/X. And, for the record, I'm not trying to say that Dakota is a white supremacist, I don't know her at all. However, I think that, for someone so obsessed with aesthetics and symbolism, her decision to keep making these posts so frequently, when she's been warned about the optics, is dubious.
