I had a job in Maccy D’s near 30 years ago now…I had a few people kick off or take a swipe at me but the one I remember most is annoying and funny.
Two very middle class women who were letting it be known they don’t usually go to Maccys, they had 6 kids with them. One was called Mungo and one Bartholomew, I didn’t hear any other names.
They ordered 8 medium meals, all with milkshakes. I told them the total which was £25.53 One got right on her nasty high horse “well someone didn’t pass maths at school, don’t you know how to add up” proper rude. The meals were about £2.89 at the time. She said “eight meals at 2.89, well even the kids know, kids what’s 3 times 8? Little Mungo piped up “24” you see, you can’t even do basic maths! It should be less than £24 pounds!
so I let her deliver her crushing blow, then deadpanned back to her “it’s 2.89 but you added a milkshake which is an extra 30p. 30p x 8 is 2.40, on top of your 8 times 2.89, which comes to £25.52. Cash or card?
Oooh...your story reminded me of when I worked in a pub, years ago. We had one regular who was a right flash
twit, he really thought he was just that bit better than everyone else, and he definitely looked down his nose at bar staff, I think he thought that we worked there because we were too stupid to do anything else for a living (Personally, I worked there because the hours suited me, I got paid to drink all night, and I had a right laugh!) Anyway, one night he brought one of his work clients in, so he was really showing off, flashing his cash and buying everyone drinks. He ordered, and paid for a large round, which consisted of at least 20+ drinks, including pints, single and double shots, and mixers. This was back in the early 80's so we didn't have the cash registers which added up the drinks for you, we had to add up the total as we went along, which was no mean feat in a busy, noisy pub. He knew full well that I was honest, and that I could count, I'd been there for a couple of years by this time, but he still thought that he could make himself look like a big man by calling me over and asking me to "check again" the total price that I had charged him for the round (this was right in front of his client, who was sitting at the bar with him). Sadly for him, I've always been very good at "mental maths", so I had complete confidence in my counting abilities. Much as I was annoyed at being called out, I plastered a huge smile on my face, grabbed a pen and paper, and went through his entire order with him, the total of which agreed with my original, to the exact penny. (That was a relief, I thought I might have been a few pence out). His face was a picture, he honestly couldn't believe it, and to be fair, he did apologise, which I brushed off, saying "No problem, I'd much rather you check, than feel that you've been cheated".
Best of all, his client leaned forward and said "I'm honestly impressed, your maths skills are amazing. Please get yourself a drink... he's paying"
