I have treated myself to a blocking board and a copy of The Granny Square Card deck, and have slowly started working through the cards.

I feel like it is getting me to really ' level up' my crochet skills. Each card gives you the pattern for a different square. The cards are numbered with the squares becoming more complex as they go. It has helped me slowly build up my confidence about what I can do, and my crochet is getting more and more neat and tidy with each square.

I highly recommend the card deck, and i might get the other decks if I am still enjoying it when I have gone through the entire deck.

This is the one I got if anyone is curious. If ordering online check that you are ordering the genuine set with the barcode on. There are a few places selling a bootleg version that looks similar but has cards that are not the same.

Why does my sewing machine choose to pack in halfway through something that is very important and needs to be finished today

Has anyone got any pics or any new baby/ pregnancy crafts they’ve made? I’m pregnant with my first baby and itching to make something but I don’t know what! I can’t knit (well I can knit basic rows and pearl but I’ve never got further than that) or crochet but willing to learn or try any new crafts if I see something I really fancy making. Thanks so much!

Welcome! Some people learn better from YouTube. Bella coco is quite good, I can’t think of any others. Just one thing to watch out for when/if you do start crocheting, US and UK use different crochet terms for the stitches. It trips a lot of folk up.

Thank you Annie for this info. I definitely feel drawn to having a go - the squares would fit in well. There is a place locally that make up into blankets, that would be to support.

Just started trying to learn crochet.. does anyone know any good YT channels for beginners? The ones I have found are too fast or hard to follow. I follow along but my single/double crochet just turns into a big knot.. I have got the chains down though. Have a few several feet long but I want to move on..

Blossom Crochet is great for a beginner. Bella Coco too as others have mentioned.

Hi, not sure if this has been posted or not

Am looking to getting into embroidery but I'd like to do designs on clothes, I see a lot of people use this fabric type sheet with the design on it then once done put it in water to wash away the sheet

How an where do I get these? Is it a thing or are people drawing/printing designs onto these sheets? Thanks

I think it might be water soluble stabiliser. I know there’s one called stick and stitch where you can print/draw your design onto the paper and then it just dissolves in water afterwards.

I noticed it was kicking off in the comments when Tilly and the Buttons released her latest pattern, is it Lyra? Apparently another indie pattern house has had one for ages called that and now all the #sewingLyra will be TATB.

I was off Instagram for a lot of March/April so feel I've missed some bits. Also, can I just say that I thought it was pretty weird that Sew Over It decided to name one of their recent blouse patterns the "Zadie blouse". Considering that TATB already has the Zadie Dress and Paper Theory has the "Zadie Jumpsuit" (which is basically iconic now amongst indie patterns ) I dunno I just thought why would you pick that?!

I think that in some countries they do have it in most of the time. That would make things better, but I don't think our stores have the space.

The bragging about how much people can buy is what gets to me. It makes people feel bad because they can't compete and it encourages others to buy buy buy to keep up with them.

I have been hanging around the Popsy thread and I think that is rubbing off on me

yes I know what you mean - the buying for buyings sake is a big issue for the world.

Working into the chain is so annoying even as an experienced crocheter. My advice would be it doesn't make a huge amount of difference how you get your hook into the chain as long as you do it consistently all the way along - try not to let the chain twist.

It can also sometimes be easier to use a larger hook size for the chain, if your pattern calls for a 4mm hook, use 4.5mm or even 5mm for the chain to give you a bit more room, then do the rest of your rows with the 4mm hook.

i had the bright idea of a bigger hook than the wool calls for as i thought it might make it looser and easier to see wtf i;m doing.. it does slightly kinda

I did a trawl of some charity shops ang got some knitting books for around £1 each, so that can be a nice cheap way to get some patterns.

I collect vintage patterns - crochet mostly - but there are way more knitting patterns in charity shops and I find vintage patterns are better written than modern.

Charity shops always have loads of knitting needles too, such a cheap way to get different sizes. I got 6 pairs for a pound the other week.

She does separate videos for left handed people, very useful.

I started off crocheting a few years back, I crocheted huge loads of blankets, sold quite a few too. I started knitting really because I saw on the online knitting community people making socks and I was just obsessed with it. So I bought some sock yarn some needles and followed a youtube tutorial for a simple sock pattern and I was away!! I loved kitting socks, I haven't knit so many recently but I do love it. Its satisfying and small enough to not feel too daunting or long terms which I like.

Ooooh I'd love to try knitting some socks! Do you have any recommendations on where to start? I can knit okay but haven't done much garment knitting.

If you are beginning any craft, do not beat yourself up If it takes time to get the results you want. Some people are amazing from the get go, others take more time.

When I first started I saw someone on reddit say something I found incredibly helpful, you don't have to be good at your hobbies, you just have to enjoy doing them. I try and remember this when I am getting annoyed at myself for the way my work looks ( it doesn't always work, the pattern nearly had me crying last week until I realised how silly I was being and put it away for the night)

I have been crocheting for just under 2 years. Each time I finish something I think it the peak of what I can do, and then the next thing blows it out of the water. I am proud of how far I have came from my first scrappy and uneven Granny squares, but I have still far to go on a journey that might take years but that is okay.

I’m really experienced in crochet, take it from me, go so slow on your journey, I’m currently on a crochet break because I’m just really bored with it atm.

I also made a lovely pompom rugs for my granddaughters' bedrooms .. just made a load of pom poms and sewed them onto doubled up Hession . I made the pom poms while watching a film.
