Just started trying to learn crochet.. does anyone know any good YT channels for beginners? The ones I have found are too fast or hard to follow. I follow along but my single/double crochet just turns into a big knot.. I have got the chains down though. Have a few several feet long but I want to move on..

Awww it is really beautiful. Lovely colours as well.

I really like Stylecraft. It is soft, has lots of nice colours, hard wearing and well priced. I have purchased a lot of 'budget yarn' and Stylecraft is around the same price and much better

I do see lots of people online who claim to only buy ' ethically produced' hand dyed and washed in nuns tears indie yarn from Etsy. All the better if it is from a women/LGBT/BAME owned business...

....And I honestly don't know how they afford their hobby, unless they only ever make small items. I have seen this stuff priced at 20 quid for 200 grams. It looks like but I can not afford to make a blanket out of it.

They are often so snotty to people who can't afford to buy this stuff regularly as well. I saw a bunch of people on reddit having a hissy fit over people buying yarn from Hobbi as they didn't like the company that owned it, and acting like anyone who bought from them is literally evil.

My point being, people need to stop being snobs and appreciate that other people can't always afford what they have.

I’m not a fan of Aldi selling yarn personally as I’ve seen people run out and I’d rather support a local yarn shop (or even an online yarn shop) and be able to buy more if I need it but all yarn has its place at the end of the day. I’d rather use Stylecraft for a blanket and be able to wash it easily.

I will use hand dyed too as I mostly make small things but I’m quite fussy who I buy from as I’ve had some horrors in the past.

Hello crafty people. My first love was sewing but I find it quite hard work plus it takes up a lot space and needs a lot of equipment. These days I'm a avid crocheter (learnt 5 years ago) but I've always wanted to learn knitting. It looks so complicated to me, worried it will challenge my brain too much so I'm yet to try it.
Here are some of my lockdown accomplishments hope you like....

The sunburst granny square is so addictive! I made 4 blankets with that pattern last year It was hard to stop.

That's fab. You could make a chunky black border work on it, and it's easier to do securely.

Shops have in a disney crochet magazine, picked up the first one today, will be able to make a blanket with little disney squares on it an this one has mickey bunting, little mermaid baby blanket an jungle book plant hangers

I love attic24 and also repeatcrafterme for patterns. I find starting with a ‘magic circle’ is neater instead of chaining (don’t get such big holes in the middle of a circle). When learning to do crochet in the round I made lots of doilies until I was confident. Then I started to make all kinds of flower patterns. Have just finished the border on this flower blanket. Now have to weave in all the ends, argh! View attachment 2613243

Ive been knitting since i was about 9 but Im really limited in what I can do. I have knitted simple jumpers before and I've recently knitted the Sophie Scarf and Sophie Hood. I also like knitting miniature things. This year, I am going to learn to knit on circular needles if it kills me! And Im desperate to crochet a granny square, Ive watched a couple of videos, but no one seems to go slowly enough for an absolute beginner who is completely cack-handed with a crochet hook!

More Merchant & Mills information - the sizes are huge! I made a dress which I had to chop 1.5” from each side.
I made the trapeze dress in the summer, I added pockets. It’s easy for M&M, and great to wear.

Someone has mentioned to me before the M&M sizes are huge!

I am not good at working out colours, but maybe a neutral colour. You have used a creamy colour in some of the squares, maybe that one?

I followed the lovable hoops channel, managed to make the owl hat they done an I was just starting, also used the Bella Coco channel am sure it's called for learning beginner things

I agree totally. I mostly make blankets that will be used and need to be washed so I don't really have an issue using acrylic. If I was making some sort of heirloom I'd love to use fancy yarn but like you say, it's so expensive and only affordable for smaller projects. I don't believe for one minute half these people are only using ethically produced natural fibres unless they're all millionaires.

Anything that kids are going to have their hands on especially needs to be hard wearing and something that won't shrink and felt in the wash. Cotton yarn can be a bit more affordable but it's heavy and probably not particularly environmentally friendly to produce anyway.

I've also bought some watercolours and will do some painting for the first time since school! Looking forward to unleashing my creativity!

I found this thread a while back and meant to post.. Hello

I'm a sewer, mainly cross stitch and embroidery. Card making and jewellery...used to make a lot but got sidetracked when we moved home. A few years ago did two mosaic workshops - enjoy that a lot but tend to do it when I can sit outside.

This winter I've mainly done Diamond painting - I haven't felt up to having concentration, so this has been really good. I've tried to find an online forum, but haven't found anything yet.

This morning I looked at a couple of Crochet mags in the supermarket, tempted to give crochet a go - have some wool from making pom poms. Would it be easier to watch an online YT tutorial?

I need to stitch something for a friend that has recently had a baby, 2 wedding stitched cards for the summer, and to get started on some Xmas decs. No pressure ...

Welcome! Some people learn better from YouTube. Bella coco is quite good, I can’t think of any others. Just one thing to watch out for when/if you do start crocheting, US and UK use different crochet terms for the stitches. It trips a lot of folk up.

Bella Coco crochet is very good. Attic 24 is very good - its a blog rather than videos which I find much easier to follow

Does anyone here ever use Folksy or sells on Folksy? I've got a poor neglected shop on Etsy that I want to get up and running again but saw this post yesterday and now wondering if I should try Folksy instead. There is a lot of stuff on Etsy that I love but a lot of it is not handmade and I don't ship outside the UK so Folksy make so much more sense for me.....but do people even know it exists????

Have a look at British Craft House too. I’ve never heard of Folksy but its ethos reminds me of British Craft House
