Is his surname just Martin pronounced as the same as with an English accent? I always read it with a French accent, I call him Me- hole MarTan
That sounds fierce posh altogether 😄 well, maybe not the Hole part 😅
Yes, Martin is said the English way 😉

There's no such thing as a Covid secure pub. We can have all the measures, Perspex, mask, QR code you like, but the issue is people doing it. Again, it's not just a case of people being bored, it's a case of what's more important? A pint or a life? I know it sounds extreme but that's what it really is. Do you really believe someone would stay away from the pub if they were ill. Because I know from the pub I live in, that they wouldn't. And it would be lovely if everyone followed the rules, if everyone appreciated the effort we put in to make things 'safe' but they don't. You can go in with the best intentions, but what happens 5 pints in? You start hugging your pals and end up (near enough) sat on their knees while the people behind the bar wonder why they bothered at all.
Whilst I agree with this. Pubs and restaurants were open over the summer and as far as I have seen they didn’t contribute to a huge spread of cases.
At some point things have to change from the mentality of not being able to do anything because of covid to living with covid. Hopefully the vaccines will start to offer enough protection we can all learn to live with it rather than how we are living right now. These lockdowns are not to irradiate covid but protect the NHS so it can cope.

Hospitality even when 'open' in the summer barely made profit. Many will never reopen.

The only worry with the Govt supporting it is these businesses do have other overheads which they cannot afford just with furlough and the really crappy Grants/Business rate cut which a lot of businesses were unable to receive.

It did in the NE, it rose gradually since they reopened and we were in a mess before schools even opened.

We had hen and stag parties from all over the country coming to Newcastle đŸ€Šâ€â™€ïž

There doesn’t seem to be a plan for hospitality openings.

if hospital cases have stabilised, surely restrictions should be lifted sooner. I don’t like this narrative of “have a great summer” - what about all the months before that?

Because we are still overwhelmed. It wouldn't take much at all to swamp the NHS. We already have other areas closed, ops cancelled and building waiting times. Can we please just get it back to manageable before we start opening everything up again.

It’s still part of the winter pressures period for nhs , we are always overwhelmed pre covid so on top of covid , we are still struggling so nhs can’t afford restrictions to relax this early

They’ve said have a great summer but the next few months will be hard. This is their final shot at a lockdown so they will not ease it a day before the absolutely must. The NHS is improving but it’s far from coping. I look forward longingly to the day I can see loved ones again but I also do not ever want to do a lockdown again so it this lasts for longer than anyone fully wants but means that we can have some normality again when it’s over them in all for it.

Our provincial government released a new timeline for things reopening and it is based on hospital numbers... for the first time, they have released a plan that makes a lot of sense. There will be 3 weeks in between each stage to assess the numbers and if they go up again, we will go back to the previous step. They will also be keeping an eye on the UK and South African variants too and how they are spreading. With those steps and the mandatory testing on entry to Canada/mandatory quarantine, I am feeling a bit more hopeful. The government has hired private security to follow on those who test negative upon arrival and can go home but must still quarantine for 14 days... if they fail to do so, they can be fined $750,000 or get 6 months in jail. Those who test positive will have to quarantine at a government facility for 14 days.

Wow today there have been over 600k doses administered! Breaking the 490k record by quite a bit. Hopefully they can keep this up.

There isn't a plan for anything opening at the moment. Even the English schools going back in March isn't confirmed.

You can't just decide to open up when you see a stabilisation if the stabilisation is happening at a bad level, you need to see vast improvements. Stabilisation doesn't equal comfort.

What was the daily rate roughly meant to be to hit the targets?

I think I’m going to have real anxiety when things open up again it’s going to be taken away again. It’s going to take me a long time to relax, does that make sense?

I agree. We were watching a show last night and the people were at a restaurant and I said "I don't think I will want to drink from a restaurant glass again" and my husband agreed, lol. The idea of eating out freaks me out 😂. We get takeaways but packaging goes to the outdoor bin and we reheat the food. I think there will be a lot of psychological damage that will have to be worked through. I think kids will also have some damage from not socialising, just seeing people in masks, etc, especially as many of our adulthood issues stem from childhood. It is very sad.

Not far off 15% being vaccinated and it’s gaining speed quite quickly!
My trust is very representative of the numbers and although we still have very sick patients with high death rates the admissions have come
down quite significantly. Everything crossed it continues đŸ€žđŸ»

Good to hear, hope it continues! This is something I am a little confused about though, how will they know if the lockdown is causing the decline or the vaccine?

Will they judge it by if less people from vaccinated groups are admitted but people from non vaccinated groups continue to be admitted in line with expected percentages in lockdown? Seems tricky to measure.

I don’t think this will be the last lockdown until they close the borders.
I hope it will be
