First off, i commend you for dealing with infertility - it really is one of the hardest topics to come to grips withI've been doing some work on myself lately because I'm going through infertility.
I was listening to a podcast with a guy called Gabor Maté - he is a specialist in childhood development and the impact it has on physical and mental health, including addictions. He explains that most people have an addiction of some kind, and it's not always the heavy stuff like drugs and alcohol. It can be things like smartphone use, exercise, work, shopping and food too.
Anyway, he claims that all addictions are rooted in childhood trauma (that is, some sort of emotional loss or disconnection from a parent), and addictions exist to soothe that pain. It made me think of Brogan and how so many of her behaviours around food and shopping seem very compulsive, and seemingly exist to make her feel better about something. My betting is she's dealing with her dysfunctional mother and estranged father through her addictive behaviour.
Maté also talks about what happens to people when activities they enjoy come to an end.
"There may be a letdown after a big event, but does the person feel a sense of basic worth in the absence of the adrenaline? Does she find comfort in the other parts of her life? Or is she left irritable, restless, and less at ease with the people in her life?"
Brogie's always on such a high when she's on a holiday, or at Bicester Village, or on a weekend away, but as soon as it's over she gets really down, talks about the holiday blues and lacks purpose. She just seems to have this nagging emptiness that never goes away and I think until she addresses her emotional issues, she'll be stuck on the hamster wheel forever.
Very astute!I've been doing some work on myself lately because I'm going through infertility.
