Finally finished Buckeye! It was a chore & should’ve been an dnf but my resolution this year was to persevere (struggle through ) This is another book that gets rave reviews but wildly missed the mark for me. I didn’t warm to any of the characters (although Everett was well written & the passages he featured in were the only I really enjoyed) & I feel women often write this kind of generational fiction better I also couldn’t help feeling the author feels very pleased with himself & that bugged me Would love to know whether you kept reading @daisynoon

Well done for finishing! I am afraid I threw the towel in early - it wasn't doing it for me, for a lot of the reasons you gave. I wasn't engaged with any of the characters.

It does feel odd to be so out of step with goodreads, though obviously not the first time that's happened to me.

it definitely is and he definitely was. it’s so ick that she really has no chance of ever forming a relationship with another man because of him

Ah, but HE also has no choice. It's less icky because he's an adult throughout their relationship, but the moment they meet she tells him she is his future wife, and when he eventually meets her as a child all he can do is repeat what, from his perspective with adult Clare, already happened. Neither of them get to choose the other.

I didn't realise that it was sort of several little stories all linked together and centred around the grocery store. It was just cosy and cute, I was quite invested in some of the characters. No ground breaking fiction, but it is the first book in a series and I will read the rest when they come around.

*whispers* i loved the knotting but i am also a veteran of ao3 she did seem very fixated on it though!

and yeah, the whole vibe of mate was off for me whereas i actually bought into the world of bride and genuinely cared about the characters. mate was overwritten in the extreme and some of the dialogue was absolutely cringeworthy (doesn’t the male lead say cockwomble at one point?) the “banter” made me want to pitch the book out of the window.

plus her giant man and teeny tiny little girl dynamic has gotten REALLY old fast

Yes! All that cockwomble, cuntmuffin fucknugget stuff makes me cringe myself inside out

A nice reading month! My first Doris Lessing - what a book! I also loved Snake-Eater (T Kingfisher can do no wrong) and The Poet Empress. Also Inda where I found out in the glossary that people in this fantasy land are descended from real world Vikings who walked through a portal...

British Library Crime Classics series is one of my ongoing reading projects. I am getting close to needing to do another second hand haul of these as I have nearly read all the ones I've got, and have the monthly subscription as well.

John Bude books tend to be very good in this series. But most of them I enjoy actually. Only ever read a couple I've really not liked so far.

British Library Crime Classics series is one of my ongoing reading projects. I am getting close to needing to do another second hand haul of these as I have nearly read all the ones I've got, and have the monthly subscription as well.

John Bude books tend to be very good in this series. But most of them I enjoy actually. Only ever read a couple I've really not liked so far.

I am planning to watch The Arsenal Stadium Mystery and The Lady Vanishes to see how similar they are to the books.

I've read more than usual this month, although I started the Quicksilver audiobook back in November and only finished it this month, and there are a couple of novellas that were quick reads in there too.

My favourite discovery this month has been the Right Royal Cosy Investigation series- easy reads, cosy mystery, and set around a (fictitious) royal family.

I've not really improved with my speed of reading in the new year so far seem to only get through 2 books a month. January was:

Wild- Kirstin Hannah
The Invisible Life of Addie LaRue- V.E. Schwab - i really related to some parts of it. The concept was good i think and it could've been a great story but strangely it was more character than plot driven, despite the concept lending itself well to plot.

Just finished The City and its Uncertain Walls so here's my January reads.

I had to warm up to The City, took a break and listened to two audiobooks instead so I got through fewer books than usual. In the end I really liked The City.

I'm on my 3rd of 5 books which I should finish by tomorrow - Kathy Burke's autobiography :

Have just finished Richard Osman's Impossible Fortune and will move onto the Philippa Gregory Boleyn novel next or the Sarah Vine book.
I'll also shortly be picking up the latest "Judith Potts" (Robert Thorogood).

I felt, after reading Shadow of Night, I needed some quick and frivolous books and the Elsie Silver’s hit the spot for me.
Really enjoyed I’ll be gone in the dark - thank you to whoever talked about it on here! I haven’t read a non-fiction for a while and this month I read two.

My spreadsheet reliably informs me that after January there is a net loss of 2 books on my tbr and 842 pages so a good start to the year, long may it continue And eventually I’ll get to Ordinary Jelly tbr numbers.

Last night I started Shallow Graves by Ray Fysh - ‘My Life as a Forensic Scientist on Britain’s Biggest Cases’ which I’m enjoying.
This morning I started The Book of Life - third in the All Souls Trilogy by Deborah Harkness in a desperate attempt to finally finish the trilogy. I will NOT be buying or reading the fourth or fifth book, after the next 800 pages I am done with that storyline!
Then I’ll move on to the third in The Gentleman guys ’trilogy’ by Scott Lynch. February will be a month of finishing trilogies for me.
